January Board Meeting

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR THE CHAPTERS IN THE MARYLAND SOCIETY. Several important issues were voted on at the State Meeting in January at the meeting of the Board of Officers and Managers of the Maryland Society:  Every chapter has to file a Form 990-N with the Internal Revenue Service each year. This filing is done online, and it is a simple and easy process. If the Form 990-N is not filed on a timely basis, the chapter’s tax exempt charter/status under the Maryland Society umbrella could be jeopardized. If this happens, the chapter must reapply for a tax exempt status and be independent of the Maryland Society, and this is a time consuming and expensive process. It is recommended this filing take place in May of each year, but it can be done at any time. Please notify MDSSAR Treasurer Gary R. Neal when you complete the 990-N filing. His email address is [email protected].  In accordance with Article IV, Section 5 of the MDSSAR Bylaws, “Each chapter shall, by the fifteenth day of March in each year, submit a report of the financial condition and activities for the preceding twelve months, and such reports shall be incorporated in the annual reports of the State Society.” This financial condition report is to be sent MDSSAR Treasurer Gary R. Neal at [email protected]. Please send activities report to me, as MDSSAR Secretary, at least 10 days ahead of the Annual Meeting on April 16th.  Each chapter is expected to submit by May 31st a yearly report on its activities for the annual Yearbook of the Maryland Society to MDSSAR Yearbook Editor Christopher Raborg. His email address is [email protected].  Each chapter must notify the Secretary of the Maryland Society whenever there is a change in an officer position. Please report the name, position, email address, telephone number, date of installation, and length of term. I am the current MDSSAR Secretary and my email address is [email protected]. My telephone number is 301-585-8629.  Each chapter is expected to report the activities of the chapter since the last meeting of the MDSSAR Board of Officers and Manager at the next scheduled meeting. A representative from the chapter at BOM meeting is desired. If that is not possible, a written report is expected.  Each chapter is expected to maintain a current database of its members including member names and their contact information. MDSSAR The Old Line State Herald February 2016 MARYLAND SAR CONTRIBUTIONS TOTAL $20,000 TO STATE ARCHIVES FOR MD 400 RESEARCH

The Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution has undertaken a huge project to research the biographies of the men of the Col. William Smallwood’s Battalion that left Maryland in July 1776 and headed to New York to help save Washington’s Army. A smaller group of this Brigade became known as the Maryland 400 for their heroic stand, later giving Maryland the moniker of the Old Line State and which is annually celebrated in New York with a weeklong series of events. The Project was the brainchild of Major General James Adkins who kick started it with personal contribution of his own funds when he was still Adjutant General of Maryland.

Major General James A. Adkins’ involvement carries a strong tradition down to today from these Men of 1776. General Adkins recently retired as the 28th Adjutant General of Maryland and three of the first four Adjutant Generals were members of this Smallwood Maryland Brigade. These men who went to NY, fought hard against larger British numbers and some died, some were imprisoned and later released, and became leaders in Maryland. The 1st AG was Henry Carberry, a cadet in the 5th Independent Comp, the 2nd AG was Samuel Turbutt Wright who was second lieutenant of Captain Edward Veazey's Seventh "Independent" Company who was imprisoned and then later released, and the 4th AG John Gassaway was an ensign in the 5th Comp. The Project was continued with generous contributions by in Chestertown MD through their annual contribution of interns. When MDSSAR Past President Christos Christou heard of the project, he encouraged the Maryland State Society to get involved and to make the first contribution of $10,000 from the Maryland 400 Trust Fund and garnered almost unanimous support for this worthy project.

The Project has already resulted in numerous biographies being posted and downloadable from the Maryland State Archives website where they will remain in perpetuity to the public to access for free. This second contribution of $10,000 brings the total so far to $20,000 from just MDSSAR with individual contributions and resources from the Maryland Archives, Washington College, individual DAR and C.A.R. Members, and Friends of the Archives taking the total to over $40,000 so far. As more biographies are completed, they will be posted reminding Marylanders of their great heritage and unlocking the stories of the past.

This lasting monument is a great memorial to a heroic man that is remember in Maryland’s State Song “Howard’s warlike thrust” and served in so many roles to assist Baltimore, Maryland, and the United States. Ivan was also instrumental in bringing to light the error in the name of the Chapter as Gen. Howard which later resulted in its correction to Col. Howard Chapter. Ivan also has served as our State President.  Christos Christou, Jr. was presented with the Chapter Medal of Distinguished Service which may only be issued once a year by a Chapter and a Compatriot may receive this medal only once in his lifetime. Chris has served, and continues to serve in so many roles, it would be impossible to list them all. He has been a Past Chapter President, Secretary, Treasurer, Registrar, Committee Chairman, etc. He was recognized by President Fugett for his initial work in planning the Memorial at Grey Rock for Col. Howard. Chris mentioned that the main work was through the idea and efforts of Past President Dooley who took the idea and came up with the grand design. Christou however worked to obtain the funding to accomplish this $10K memorial when the design was complete.
