    Radio Pioneer: Victor H. Laughter Dr. Marvin R. Bensman We know rather little about the earliest history of wireless development other than stories about those particular pioneers whose efforts were influential or successful. It should not surprise those who study that history to discover that many individuals did not achieve success but contributed much. One fascinating story that has never been told is that of Mr. Victor H. Laughter. Victor H. Laughter was born January, 1888, in Byhalia, Mississippi. 1 At the age of 12, Laughter and his sister Belva boarded with Andersen W. Meely of Byhalia, Mississippi, while attending the Waverly Institute. 2 They may have been orphaned. It was during this time, in 1900, that Laughter built his first experimental wireless set. Later, Belva married a Mr. Joseph Thompson and moved to Memphis. 3 We have no direct record of Victor H. Laughter's further education in the field of wireless or electricity, but he most likely attended some college or institute between 1906 and 1909. In 1909, his book, Operator's Wireless Telegraph and Telephone Handbook, was published by Frederick J. Drake and Company. The book was written ". with the end in view of leading the student through the experimental stage, on up to the more complicated types of wireless telegraph and telephone instruments."4 The book was a well written and complete description of the wireless field up to that time, with a section on Dr. Lee deForest's audion which had only been patented that year. Laughter noted: "The Audion has proven very sensitive for use in wireless telephony, yet it is doubtful that it will ever come into wide use, owing to the difficulty in manufacture and short life."5 This was a true statement for that time.

The Saunders family soon moved to Montgomery County, Tennessee where Saunders grew up. He took a job working for a wholesale grocer in Clarksville. In his early 20’s Clarence Saunders moved to Memphis and took a sales position in a Memphis grocery. He enjoyed the work, but disliked the inefficiency of the sales methods used in grocery stores of the day. Grocery stores placed items on shelves with counters between the customers and the sales items. Shoppers would tell store clerks standing behind the counters what they wanted and the clerks would pull it off the shelves. The process took a long time and led Saunders to develop the idea of self-service. The idea of self-service was not entirely new but Clarence Saunders was the man who was instrumental in selling the idea to the consumer. With his more modern approach to grocery sales Clarence Saunders opened his first store September 11, 1916. Piggly Wiggly stores opened with the idea of self-service and lower costs for the consumer. When asked where he got the name for the store, Saunders told people he chose the name so that people would ask that very question.

Tamilia PhD Professor of Marketing Department of Marketing École des sciences de la gestion University of Quebec at Montreal [email protected] Revised and updated periodically (Last update: July, 2011) Note : The following short introduction to the department store was first written when this bibliographical project was initiated by the author in 2000. Since then, the introduction has been updated but is still incomplete. Over the past 10 years, new information sources on the department store have been found which makes it near impossible to summarize in this introduction the history of this retail institution which evolved over time along with the history of retailing. The wealth of information on the department store over the past 150 years is quite impressive especially since the 1970s when historical research in the social sciences became increasing popular among historians of all stripes but less so in academic marketing. A more complete introduction to the wonderful world of department store can be found in Tamilia (2003) and Tamilia and Reid (2007) . Abstract The paper has two main objectives. The first is to provide a short summary of what the department store is all about. There is a need to discuss its historical role not only in marketing and retailing, but also in society and the world in general. The next objective is to provide social historians and other historical researchers with the most comprehensive and complete reference list on the department store ever compiled.

    1 Availability and Accessibility: A Look at Inequality in Food Retail in Memphis, Tennessee Julie Coen Advisor: Shaolu Yu Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies July 2016 2 Abstract: This paper looks at the grocery gap in Memphis, Tennessee, and concludes that individuals from different areas and in different socioeconomic circumstances do not experience equal availability or accessibility when it comes to the grocery industry there. Research into availability within three representative neighborhoods (Berclair, Cooper Young and Castalia, and Whitehaven) found differences in product variety yet minimal geographic price discrimination. Findings about accessibility include an extension of price sensitivity to the entire relationship between individuals and local stores, the impact of location and mobility, and a perceived lack of viable alternatives to Kroger. Key words: grocery gap, supermarkets, food insecurity, retail inequality, geographic price discrimination, accessibility, urban grocery markets 3 AVAILABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY: A LOOK AT INEQUALITY IN FOOD RETAIL IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE Introduction The grocery gap is a phenomenon by which food and other groceries, and specifically affordable, quality versions of these, are not equally available and accessible to all members of society. Some groups, particularly those in urban neighborhoods which are predominantly poor or comprised of minorities, experience higher barriers to obtaining necessary products. This can be measured in many ways: number and size of nearby grocery stores, products and prices within those stores, or other factors such as relative lack of alternatives and information. The fundamental components of the problem are availability, which comes down to the different levels of choice provided to different customers, and accessibility, which includes social and economic conditions that cause individuals to experience very different results when dealing with the same industry and similar availability.
