WINFRAMER IN THE WEST MIDS

ISO Chemie’s thermal insulating and load bearing bracket support system has been specified as part of energy efficiency improvements to dozens of residential homes in the West Midlands. The move sees WINFRAMER units being retrofitted under an initiative to bring poorly insulated properties in Coventry up to current energy efficiency standards and provide better quality housing for homeowners along with long-term cost savings. Passivhaus certified and fire rated to up to 30 minutes, WINFRAMER is a prefabricated installation frame, manufactured to accommodate cavities up to 250mm that allows windows to be supported independently from the face of the wall, regardless of any external cladding being in place. The composite WINFRAMER brackets can bear heavy windows loads, including bi-fold doors, to provide a reliable, strong and high-performance support frame. Installation is quick with windows attached directly and secured mechanically using either standard fixing screws or fixing lugs in the usual manner. A hinged insulation core combines with the composite wood structural bracket to become an integral part of the overall wall structure, providing compliance with window energy saving regulations (EnEV) and the RAL quality assurance association. ISO-Chemie is one of Europe’s main producers of impregnated foam sealants, specialising in the manufacturer of foam products from polyethylene (EPE), polypropylene (EPP) and polyurethane ISO Chemie’s (PUR) using the latest production techniques. ASSOCIATE MEMBER OPTION AVAILABLE AT SWA

The Steel Window Association has recently launched a three-tier system for the industry’s manufacturing membership and, as a further refinement to the new structure, an “associate member” package has been developed. Designed for suppliers to the steel window and door industry in the UK, an associate membership, which costs £1200 pa, comprises a listing on the SWA website with contact details and links to the individual websites. In addition, companies can issue product information to SWA members via the association’s Secretariat and have access to comprehensive information on product and market development. An invitation to the SWA AGM is also included giving the opportunity to meet key members and industry influencers. Associate member, James Barrett, Steel Window Fittings, explains the benefits to his organisation, “Being able to meet a number of our larger customers at the same time is really beneficial. We hear about our customers’ needs which gives SWF a clear focus on what we should be working on. Not only can we discuss topics as a group, there is always time to talk to individuals about their own requirements.”

As we begin to explore and experience cities and cultures again (tentatively) there is a swathe of architects who are committed to making city experiences that little bit better. From DXA Studio’s re-imagining of Brooklyn Bridge (winning an NYCxDesign Award for the design) to the city of Helsinki’s South Harbour transformation, as part of a new competition that has just closed it’s entry deadline. BACA Architects and Waterstudio have recently collaborated on a masterplan for a residential neighbourhood in Boston, a floating model that will initiate a template for climate adaptive and affordable homes. So, how does re-imagining cities open up on our possibilities for better future city dwelling and how should we be tapping into the individuality of each town, city and country and explore and develop these ideas?

By considering the waterfront and, in particular, the water sheet, as an asset of the city for development then significant parcels of space can be opened for a number of uses. Unlike their land-based counterparts building on water offers a unique flexibility. Floating foundations allow substantial structures to be built off site and floated in. These could range from affordable housing, commercial and retail offers to Olympic stadia, schools, and hospitals. This could mean minimal disruption to the city and the ability to shuffle elements, modernise and adapt quickly to changing market conditions. Nantes, a city I visited in the capacity of Assessor for European City of the Year, has an ethos of bringing people together through public space. In parallel to transforming Ile de Nantes, a 337 ha post-industrial wasteland, it has undertaken a commitment that every city-dweller should be within 300m of a public green space. In so doing pockets of green have flourished, often at the expense of the car - more good news – to become places of retreat, somewhere to find fresh herbs, and natter to neighbours. We know that green spaces make us happier, kinder, heal faster, more productive and less likely to commit crime. (There is some excellent research by Illinois University - Frances E Kuo & William Sullivan) The messier and more diverse the green the greater the benefit. Whilst for some of the densest cities, introducing green may appear to be a challenge, imagination and collaboration with policy makers is key. Empty sites can become temporary neighbourhood parks, rooftops of multi-storey car parks make great sky allotments. Traditionally speaking, the biggest project the team has worked on would be “the Hyatt at Times Square for which we were the interior architects. ROCKWOOL® LAUNCHES FLAT ROOF ZONING TOOL

ROCKWOOL has unveiled a new flat roof zoning tool designed to help specifiers and roofing contractors balance performance criteria, regulation compliance and design targets when choosing insulation. Hosted on the ROCKWOOL website, the tool has been created in recognition of the increasing prominence of flat roofs in contemporary building design. The purpose of the tool is to simplify and optimise insulation design by zoning flat roofs according to how each area will be used. Through the application, users start by drawing a plan outline of the roof, then create zones before setting properties for each area. Via the tool, incorporate details including rain noise performance (BB93); airborne noise reduction; thermal performance; and product mechanical strength. Once inputted, the tool then recommends the best ROCKWOOL stone wool insulation for each roof zone. With time-saving at its heart, the ROCKWOOL Flat Roof Zoning Tool allows results to be easily exported for integration into wider design and specification plans. Projects can also be saved and amended later should there be changes in design or performance needs.
