1 Keynote Address by Prime Minister of Malaysia Yab Tun Dr Mahathir Bin Mohamad First-Year Anniversary of the Pakatan Harapan G
KEYNOTE ADDRESS BY PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA YAB TUN DR MAHATHIR BIN MOHAMAD FIRST-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE PAKATAN HARAPAN GOVERNMENT ON 9TH MEI 2019 (THURSDAY) AT PUTRAJAYA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTRE (PICC) Assalamualaikum and Good Afternoon. 1. I am grateful to be able to be with all of you here and delivering a speech in conjunction with the first-year anniversary of the Pakatan Harapan Government. 2. First of all, I am thankful to be granted longevity in life, thus enabling me to continue serving this country of ours. 3. Secondly, our country remains peaceful, and during this fasting month all Muslims are able to perform their religious obligations in peace and harmony. 4. I am also grateful that during the Government transition, it was not marred by riots or violence despite attempts made to undermine the election results. 5. Feeling grateful, however, does not mean that we are not aware of the heavy responsibilities that we need to shoulder. 6. Pakatan Harapan was established as a coalition of four parties. Its grand purpose - is to topple the Barisan Nasional Government led by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. 7. The four parties with differing ideas and objectives agreed to work together because all were aware that they would not be able to defeat the BN Government if they were on their own. If they could not set aside their individual needs and join hands to save Malaysia from a kleptocratic Government, the future of this country will be at stake and the people will continue to suffer. It is likely that Malaysia will be what is known as a "failed state". -

Johor No Longer an Umno Fortress, Says Chin Tong Malaysiakini.Com June 26, 2013 by Ram Anand
Johor no longer an Umno fortress, says Chin Tong MalaysiaKini.com June 26, 2013 By Ram Anand INTERVIEW The recent general election results in Johor proved that the southern state is no longer a fortress for Umno, said Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong, who is DAP's political strategist. In the 13th general election, Pakatan Rakyat focused heavily on making inroads in Johor, fielding prominent leaders, such as Liew himself along with Teo Nie Ching (now Kulai MP), and DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang (now Gelang Patah MP). NONEThey had only managed to obtain five out of the 26 parliamentary seats in the state, though it still represented a marked improvement from its sole parliament seat at the 2008 general election. "We were hoping to win between 10 to 15 parliamentary seats. But we always said that the minimum for us in Johor was going to be five seats. "We did win five, but PKR lost many seats with marginal differences - Pasir Gudang, Muar, Ledang, Segamat and Tebrau. DAP also lost Labis narrowly," he said during an interview with Malaysiakini last week. The majority for BN in these six seats was between 353 and 1,967 votes. dap kluang ceramah 200413 lim guan eng liew chin tong tan hong pin hu pang chaw suhaizan kaiat khairul faiziLiew, who is considered the brain behind DAP's southern campaign, said that nobody could be blamed for Pakatan's performance, and that on the whole, the lesson to be learnt from the Johor results was that the state is not a BN fortress. -

The Implication of Conjunctive Element Shifts in the Translation of Argumentative Texts
KEMANUSIAAN Vol. 25, No. 1, (2018), 19–41 The Implication of Conjunctive Element Shifts in the Translation of Argumentative Texts SIEW HUI SHENG SOH BEE KWEE *LOOI WAI LING Malaysian Languages and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Languages and Liguistics, University of Malaya, 50603 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia *Corresponding author: [email protected] Published online: 20 April 2018 To cite this article: Siew, H.S., Soh, B.K. and Looi, W.L. 2018. The implication of conjunctive element shifts in the translation of argumentative texts. KEMANUSIAAN the Asian Journal of Humanities 25(1): 19–41, https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 To link to this article: https://doi.org/10.21315/kajh2018.25.1.2 Abstract. This study attempts to identify the implication of conjunctive element shifts in the Chinese translation of argumentative column articles by an established columnist. More specifically, this study focuses on the implication of a cohesive shift, which includes explicitations, implicitations, shifts and wrong translations of conjunctive elements in the translated text. The texts in this study are argumentative in nature, and the use of conjunctive elements is pivotal in guiding the reader on the flow of the argument at hand. Through in- depth analysis and observation, it is found that changes in conjunctive elements can affect a translation in six possible ways: altering the intensity of the message, shifting the focus of the message, altering the tone and manner of the texts, causing repetitious and intrusive translations, changing the interpretation of the text, and altering the conversational-like element in the source text. -
