Kindergarten students at Our Lady of Victories School in Sayreville hold up items that they collected for the St. Vincent DePaul Society’s food pantry. Under the direction of their teacher, Laura Buongiovanni, a Lenten food drive was held at the school. Students in other grades donated many foods, paper goods, and Easter basket items. The Kindergarten students collected the donations, sorted them, and helped carry them to the food pantry located in Msgr. Dalton Hall. The experience has helped the students realize that they can help others, even at a young age. The students also had practice with their practical math skills by counting, sorting and keeping a tally of each type of donation. The items collected will help people within the Our Lady of Victories Parish and the Sayreville area. (Photo/info submitted) Fundraiser To Support SA Fire Dept. Barbara Anne Gray (l) formerly of South Amboy and currently living in Florida visited her brother Jim Gray (r) of South Amboy over Easter time, and is happy to show off the latest copy of The SA Times. Jim sends her a copy each month, and she loves keeping up with her old hometown. If any of our readers attended St. Mary’s Grammar School from 1960- 62, Miss Gray was a very popular 4th grade teacher. She was in her early 20’s when she taught her first 4th grade class during the 1960-61 school year. There were two other 4th grades at the time, taught by Mrs. O’Brien, and Mrs. Karnish. After leaving St. Mary’s in ’62, she taught at Spotswood for awhile, and then moved to Florida, where she began a new occupation working for Eastern Airlines. Barbara retired after enjoying a highly-successful career with Eastern. (Photo/story by Tom Burkard)

Walking For Good Health Over the last quarter of a century, the exercise field has experienced one craze after another. But, only one activity- fitness walking- walking has shown steady growth and popularity. Walking is a surprisingly effective strategy for lifelong health. It is accessible to almost everyone. You’ve done it all your life and you can continue to do it well into old age. Walking also delivers proven benefits to all of the body’s major systems…muscles, bones, heart and circula- tion. You can walk almost anywhere without special facilities or equipment. Studies show that walkers traveling faster than 5 miles an • TANK REMOVAL • INSTALLATION hour actually burn twice as many calories • TANK TESTING • SANDFILL as runners going the same speed. When you begin a walking program, • ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES keep in mind that you’re in no big hurry. This is a lifetime health, not overnight magic. At first, forget heart rates and stop watches. (732) Just go walk at a comfortable pace slightly ADVANCED above stroll. You don’t have to walk any particular way, but there comes a point when SITE refinements offer definite benefits. The IMPROVEMENT correct posture, arm swing and stride add ASI 566-0281 up to higher intensity exercise and lower risk of injury. Posture-When walking, lean slightly forward, from the ankles, not the waist. Leaning from the waist will only tire your back and make breathing harder. Keep your head level and your chin up. Arm Swing-Keep your elbows firmly bent at a 90-degree angle, and swing your arms from the shoulder. Your hand should end its forward swing at breastbone height. On the backswing, if you’re moving fast, the upper arm is almost parallel to the ground. Stride-Make your stride long and smooth. Borrow some movers from com- petitive race walkers: Keep your supporting leg straight as your body passes over it, and let the hip rise and relax. As the leg moves to the rear, keep its foot on the ground as long as possible before pushing off. Remember-The proper technique is not as important as getting out there and doing something. Keep in mind that healthy people are well overall; their activities help fend off heart disease and circulatory problems. The key is to stay active. Keep it up-To make walking a habit takes will power and sometimes a strategy. Schedule regular walks with a friend if you need an extra push, or walk first thing in the morning before other commitments crop up, or vary your routine to keep it interesting- or get a dog! Finally, try not to think of it as exercise. It’s time you’ve set aside for yourself. Enjoy it! South Amboy-Sayreville Times April 28, 2012 25
