Szentpétervár St. Petersburg Két Világ Határán Connecting Two Worlds HORIZON 2011/8 • Ingyenes példány • complImentary copy www.malev.com SZENTPÉTERVÁR ST. PETERSBURG két világ határán connecting two worlds üdvözöljük A fedélzeten | welCome on BoArd Kedves UTAsUNK! Berényi János Az igAzgAtóság elnöke ChAirmAn of the BoArd of direCtors deAr PAsseNgers, The new management of Malév is working hard to provide services in line with your demands and means, since it is no secret that our aim is for as many people as possible to choose Hungarian Airlines, be they travelling for personal or business reasons. When planning a journey many issues have to be considered, price naturally being one of the most important. With that in mind, we have developed our online travel planner which primarily takes into account the price level that you determine. With the help of our application, which is both top-quality and new in Europe, in seconds you can find the appropriate air ticket matching all your requirements. With Malév’s booking system you can search flights almost one year in advance and thus you can already book tickets for next year’s summer vacation or plan ahead the dates for your visit home or business meetings. Furthermore, besides price considerations, the flexible system allows you to indicate the character of your destination as well, and thus even more opportunities are opened up for making the best decision. You can chose, for example, seaside resorts, ideal shopping or recommended destinations for those travelling with children. Naturally booking can be immediately initiated with the travel planner. In addition to the travel planner, we have also introduced further online services. This month we are launching an application to enable our frequent flyers to book air tickets on our website using accrued points, and my col- leagues are already working on the introduction of additional online and mobile phone tools. All these developments make ticket purchasing and travel more convenient, saving you time, money and energy. Thank you for again choosing to fly with Malév this month. 3 tArtAlom Contents HORIZON 30 A horizon a malév magyar légiközlekedési zrt. havilapja. megjelenik a geomédia zártkörű részvénytársaság kiadásában. • David W. Spiro Conductor
David W. Spiro Conductor Critics have called the conducting of David W. Spiro thrilling, vibrant, extraordinary, dramatic, noble, incisive, and energetic. Maestro Spiro recently led performances of La Traviata and Tosca during his enthusiastically received return to Bulgaria. He also made a significant departure from his core repertoire with his first Wagner opera, Der Fliegende Holländer. This season also saw several other firsts. He conducted his first French opera, Bizet's Carmen, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Prior to that, Ruse saw Spiro lead Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, as well as a return to Mozart with Don Giovanni. Previously, his Aida and Rigoletto at the Ruse State Opera were hugely successful. He celebrated the Verdi Bicentennial with Un Ballo in Maschera and La Traviata at the Teatro Mancinelli in Orvieto. Opera di Verona hosted Spiro leading the Mozart/da Ponte operas Don Giovanni, Cosi fan Tutte and Le Nozze di Figaro in three consecutive seasons. Earlier in the decade saw his La Boheme at the North Czech Opera and also his Romanian debut in Bucharest with his signature piece, La Traviata. The Albanian-American conductor made his mark by leading members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in a tribute to his mentor, Leonard Bernstein. Rossini‘s Stabat Mater featured Edda Moser, D’anna Fortunato, Gregory Kunde and Jerome Hines and was hailed as “a tribute worthy of Bernstein”. Specifically, Maestro Spiro’s interpretation was hailed as “the closest thing to heaven.” (The Boston Globe) An electric performance of Cherubini‘s Medea for the Boston Festival Opera featured Sylvia Sass, Rita Gorr, Franco Bonanome and John Macurdy.

  • Decca Discography
DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>V VIENNA, Austria, Germany, Hungary, etc. The Vienna Philharmonic was the jewel in Decca’s crown, particularly from 1956 when the engineers adopted the Sofiensaal as their favoured studio. The contract with the orchestra was secured partly by cultivating various chamber ensembles drawn from its membership. Vienna was favoured for symphonic cycles, particularly in the mid-1960s, and for German opera and operetta, including Strausses of all varieties and Solti’s “Ring” (1958-65), as well as Mackerras’s Janá ček (1976-82). Karajan recorded intermittently for Decca with the VPO from 1959-78. But apart from the New Year concerts, resumed in 2008, recording with the VPO ceased in 1998. Outside the capital there were various sessions in Salzburg from 1984-99. Germany was largely left to Decca’s partner Telefunken, though it was so overshadowed by Deutsche Grammophon and EMI Electrola that few of its products were marketed in the UK, with even those soon relegated to a cheap label. It later signed Harnoncourt and eventually became part of the competition, joining Warner Classics in 1990. Decca did venture to Bayreuth in 1951, ’53 and ’55 but wrecking tactics by Walter Legge blocked the release of several recordings for half a century. The Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra’s sessions moved from Geneva to its home town in 1963 and continued there until 1985. The exiled Philharmonia Hungarica recorded in West Germany from 1969-75. There were a few engagements with the Bavarian Radio in Munich from 1977- 82, but the first substantial contract with a German symphony orchestra did not come until 1982.

  • Béla Bartók's Duke Bluebeard's Castle: a Partial and Personal Survey Of
Béla Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard's Castle: A Partial and Personal Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore Bartók composed A kékszakállú herceg vára (“Duke Bluebeard’s Castle”) in 1911 for entry into the Ferenc Erkel Prize and modified it the following year for a second, music publisher’s competition; on neither occasion did he win, probably because of its essentially static, internalised dramatic nature and the cast being restricted to only two singers and brief choral interjections in the form of sighing. It certainly would not have been because of any perceived limitation in its orchestration or musical content, which is mostly polytonal and chromatic, centring the dissonant properties of the minor second. Bartók devised a new ending in 1917 and the premiere was on 24 May 1918 at the Royal Hungarian Opera House in Budapest. The libretto was written by Béla Balázs, the poet and friend of the composer, and is based on the macabre French tale La Barbe bleue by Charles Perrault. It really demands to be heard in the original Hungarian, preferably with the chilling spoken Prologue; I do love the unexpected, muscular strangeness of the language (part of the Finno-Ugric language group, hence wholly unfamiliar to anyone used to hearing opera sung in a Teutonic, Slavonic or Latinate tongue). Furthermore, lasting around an hour and with little in the way of action, this psycho-drama plays out perfectly in the mind’s eye - in my experience better than on stage or on film - so a CD of a studio recording or a radio broadcast performance constitutes the perfect format for appreciating its unique power.

  • Verdi's Macbeth
Verdi’s Macbeth - A Survey of the Major Recordings by Ralph Moore Although Macbeth was still a product of his anni di galera, Verdi was able to expend more time, care and effort over it than he had had for his previous operas, working closely with Piave, his first librettist, then the poet Maffei to ensure that the spirit and even precisely some of the language (translated into Italian, obviously) of his beloved Shakespeare infused the work, and giving his singers close instructions regarding how he wanted it performed. As such, it was a watershed opera, representing a great leap forward in both his music and dramaturgy. He had the further advantage of a star baritone playing the lead role; Felice Varesi enjoyed the greatest success of his career at its premiere in 1847. As a result, despite some stylistic infelicities and a certain incongruity between the earlier, rum-ti-tum style of its original form and the sophistication of the later additions, Macbeth, having largely dropped out of sight until it was revived post WW2, is now deservedly popular and frequently staged. It is today almost invariably heard in the revision which Verdi made for Paris in 1864. One live performance and one studio recording below present the 1847 original; the latter is included here merely for its comedy value. There is also a recording of a live performance given at the Valle d'Itria Festival, Martina Franca in 1997 which I have not heard but by all accounts is not as well sung as the 1978 live recording on Opera Rara.
