BLACK PEPPER
Scarborough Castle, North Bay, Scarborough, North Yorkshire Scarborough Castle dates back to the 12th century during which period Henry II strengthened its walls to provide a strategic northern base for the English monarchy. Centuries later, a certain Mrs. Tomyzin Farrer discovered the medicinal properties of the local water and the first seaside spa was born. Ferguson Brown Type ‘A’ Tractor, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire Manufactured in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, the Ferguson Brown Type A tractor set the world of ploughing alight by introducing farming’s first three point linkage. Now the height of trailed implements could be adjusted to enable, amongst other things, a consistent depth of ploughing. In complete contrast to this practical agricultural engineering came the luxury grand touring cars of Aston Martin. Sir David Brown acquired the company in 1947 and put his initials on the radical new DB series made famous by James Bond in a suitably modified DB 5. Very tasty!

SWEET CHILLI & LIME
She eld’s Last Tram Electric tramways formed the backbone of local transport in She eld from 1899 until their demise in October 1960 when tramcar No. 510 was decorated as She eld’s last tram. Originally built in 1950, it has run at Crich Tramway Village for many years, eventually requiring an overhaul which has taken 18 months and £60,000 to complete. One aspect which received attention were the side panels depicting She eld’s transport history which were painstakingly recreated in the Museum workshops. The Spring Gathering The Yorkshire Dales, in particular Wensleydale and Swaledale, have a history of sheep farming stretching back for hundreds of years providing Dales farmers with both warmth, from the wool, and food. Hardy hill breeds were developed to cope with the hostile upland environment of North Yorkshire. ‘The Spring Gathering’ a unique sculpture carved in elm wood by chainsaw artist Andris Bergs, celebrates this heritage portraying the shepherd with his trusty sheep dog and his sheep. This distinctive sculpture can be seen in the small Dales market town of Hawes, North Yorkshire.

The White Rose of York This famous emblem of Yorkshire has been adopted from the House of York. It is believed to have been initiated by Edmund of Langley, the first Duke of York, in the 14th century. It represents the Virgin Mary who was often called ‘the Mystical Rose of Heaven’ and is white as a sign of purity. On 1st August 1759, Yorkshire soldiers returning from the battle of Minden, picked white roses as a tribute to their fallen comrades. Since that time the 1st August has been commemorated as Yorkshire Day.
