Sensível e metódico, desenvolveu o seu talento buscando sempre harmonizar conhecimento e imaginação, solidez e finura, Natureza e História, missão cultural e autenticidade íntima. Um sentimentalismo afável, alguma melancolia, a doença fatal aos quarenta anos, ajudaram ainda à rápida formação em seu redor de um devocionário post-mortem, muito para além do notável equilíbrio de créditos formais e estéticos de toda a sua operosidade. Palavras-chave: Mecenato; ensino artístico; coleções; exposições Abstract Francisco Vieira Junior (1765-1805) was a painter, and also an academic teacher, who became a fundamental pivot of the arrival of Neoclassicism to Portugal. Its progressive and selected training path, internationally determined (Italy, Germany, England), was soon followed by a large and applauded professional practice. Versatile in many genres, he devoted himself more to the study of Nature and History, cultivating scholarship and creativity. Very balanced in its technical qualities and aesthetic options, Vieira synthesized a stylish and sentimental eclecticism. His attitude was always methodical but open and friendly. When he died, forty years old only, some major institutional projects were frustrated. But the uniqueness and consistency of his life and work, in the national context, explain why a rapidly growing devotion was formed around his image. -

ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014 1 The Warburg Institute exists principally to further the study of the classical tradition, that is of those elements of European thought, literature, art and institutions which derive from the ancient world. It houses an Archive, a Library and a Photographic Collection. It is one of the ten member Institutes of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London. The classical tradition is conceived as the theme which unifies the history of Western civilization. The bias is not towards ‘classical’ values in art and literature: students and scholars will find represented all the strands that link medieval and modern civilization with its origins in the ancient cultures of the Near East and the Mediterranean. It is this element of continuity that is stressed in the arrangement of the Library: the tenacity of symbols and images in European art and architecture, the persistence of motifs and forms in Western languages and literatures, the gradual transition, in Western thought, from magical beliefs to religion, science and philosophy, and the survival and transformation of ancient patterns in social customs and political institutions. The Warburg Institute is concerned mainly with cultural history, art history and history of ideas, especially in the Renaissance. It aims to promote and conduct research on the interaction of cultures, using verbal and visual materials. It specializes in the influence of ancient Mediterranean traditions on European culture from the Middle Ages to the modern period. Its open access library has outstanding strengths in Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance art, Arabic, Medieval and Renaissance philosophy, the history of religion, science and magic, Italian history, the history of the classical tradition, and humanism. -

1 Earthquakes and the Coming of a Age of a Scientific Attitude in Portugal (1755-1791) Francisco António Lourenço VAZ Professor in the Department of History University of Évora • International Conference - 250Th Anniversary of the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake , Proceedings , p. 76-79 . ABSTRACT During the Enlightenment when in Europe rationalist optimism avowed the importance of science and technique to human happiness, the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake troubled human consciousness, brought fear and installed doubt. We can say that its mental consequences were devastating. In this context, the affirmation of a scientific mentality in Portugal had an important reference in the work of Ribeiro Sanches, Tratado da Conservaçam da Saude dos Povos (1757). This Portuguese scientist published his work after the earthquake. In there he made an inquiry of the most violent earthquakes in history. Ribeiro Sanches ideas had a remarkable influence on the Portuguese intellectual elite, namely to the necessity of asking about the phenomena real causes. He abandoned the traditional moral explanations such as the “violent passions”, “ the dissolute life” and other of this kind. In the present paper we will analyse the quarrel between two mentalities towards earthquakes: the traditional and the scientific. The traditional saw earthquakes as a divine punishment, arguing that men should pray to prevent this kind of disasters, while the scientific considered earthquakes as natural observable facts that could be eventually explained according to natural causes. We take as base some texts about the earthquake of Lisbon; especially the letters of D. Manuel do Cenáculo, where we can find accounts about the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and also the 1791 earthquake that took place in Southern Portugal. -

Fernando Pessoa Lisbon, what the tourist should see ... illustrated and geolocalized http://lisbon.pessoa.free.fr 1 of 48 What the Tourist Should See Over seven hills, which are as many points of observation whence the most magnificent panoramas may be enjoyed, the vast irregular and many-coloured mass of houses that constitute Lisbon is scattered. For the traveller who comes in from the sea, Lisbon, even from afar, rises like a fair vision in a dream, clear-cut against a bright blue sky which the sun gladdens with its gold. And the domes, the monuments, the old castles jut up above the mass of houses, like far-off heralds of this delightful seat, of this blessed region. The tourist's wonder begins when the ship approaches the bar, and, after passing the Bugio lighthouse 2 - that little guardian-tower at the mouth of the river built three centuries ago on the plan of Friar João Turriano -, the castled Tower of Belém 3 appears, a magnificent specimen of sixteenth century military architecture, in the romantic-gothic-moorish style (v. here ). As the ship moves forward, the river grows more narrow, soon to widen again, forming one of the largest natural harbours in the world with ample anchorage for the greatest of fleets. Then, on the left, the masses of houses cluster brightly over the hills. That is Lisbon . Landing is easy and quick enough ; it is effected at a point of the bank where means of transport abound. A carriage, a motor-car, or even a common electric trail, will carry the stranger in a few minutes right to the centre of the city. -

A Timeline of Anglo-Portuguese relations (from the 12th Century to date) With grateful thanks to Dr. Paulo Lowndes Marques O.B.E. (1941-2010), who produced this research in the last year of his life. He was a longstanding Chairman of The British Historical Society of Portugal for 25 years. English Crusaders who had embarked at Dartmouth on their way to what was later known as the 2nd Crusade, were persuaded by the Bishop of Oporto to help the young 1147 Portuguese King D. Afonso Henriques in the conquest of Lisbon from the Moors. The only extensive account of the siege and conquest is a letter by an English priest, Fr. Osbern. The first bishop of Lisbon was Gilbert of Hastings. The Basilica of Mártires in the Chiado area of Lisbon is dedicated to the English Crusaders who fell during the siege. The 1147 English Sarum rite for the liturgy of the Mass was introduced, which continued until 1536. Gilbert of Hastings died in 1166. He was buried in the Cathedral, but his tomb is now lost. English Crusaders joined in the siege of Silves and fought 1189 "with the utmost ferocity". 1217 English Crusaders helped with the conquest of Alcácer do Sal. 15 The Treaty of Tagilde, signed near Braga, between D. 1372 Fernando of Portugal and Edward III, regarding the latter’s son, John of Gaunt, ambitions to become King of Castille. A Treaty between Portugal and England was signed in St. Paul’s Cathedral by D. Fernando, last of the Burgundy dynasty, King of Portugal, and Edward III, King of England. -

Antonio Ribeiro Sanches, Vesalius, VII, 1, 27 - 35, 2001 Antonio Ribeiro Sanches A Portuguese doctor in 18th century Europe José Luis Doria Summary Antonio Ribeiro Sanches was born in Portugal in 1699 and died in Paris in 1783. After his medical studies in Salamanca, he practised for a short while in Portugal. From there, he fled from the Inquisition, never to return. He passed through Italy, England, and France, enrolling afterwards in the University of Ley den to study with Boerhaave. Through this master he was referred to the Russian tsarina to handle important medical functions. He stayed in Russia for more than 16 years, exiled afterwards to Paris, where he lived the last 36 years of his life. He wrote intensely and actively; he kept in contact with the European masters and influenced the cultural environment of his time. In medicine, he is remembered primarily by the studies he developed on venereal diseases (syphilis), and the exchange he established with Chinese medicine; by the reorganization of medical studies in Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg) and at the University of Strasburg. However his main contribution was his role in the reformation of the Portuguese University. In addition, his interests extended into cultural aspects such as the arts, social and commercial issues, politics and religion. Some of his works were included in The Methodical Encyclopaedia by Diderot and in Natural History by Buffon. Résumé Antonio Ribeiro Sanches est né en 1699 au Portugal et est mort à Paris en 1783.
