Seeing that the Early Modern colonial empires connected a wide variety of peoples and cul- tural complexes all over the world, this will also be a contribution to colonial history. The focus of the pres- ent collection is on the relation between the development of local knowledge production and its connec- tion with wider contexts, at local and global levels. In this setting, knowledge production would, therefore, also be influenced by how knowledge circulated among the various producers, associated with local factors, processes of exchange, negotiation, and reconfiguration, often involving asymmetric power relations. From that viewpoint, knowledge production would no longer be related only with the so-called scientific knowledge, as upheld by traditional works on the history of science, but would also involve wide-ranging practical knowledge and its global circulation, allowing knowledge production mechanisms to be under- stood as a more complex system, crossing different local and polycentric systems. During the last decades, different strands of analysis have been running in the same direction. In colonial studies, there has been an increase in studies analyzing the role of local populations within the pro- cesses of empire building1. Another discussion that has become increasingly relevant concerns the impor- tance of extra-official circuits and mechanisms, as well as self-organized networks connecting diverse worlds in contact, assumed both as trans-imperial and cross-cultural2. This question is intrinsically related to the circulation of artefacts of knowledge – material or cultural – through these connected structures3. In this context, it became crucial to look at the activities of various intermediaries, brokers, go-betweens and translators, without whom the colonial institutions or the religious orders could have successfully inter- acted with the local communities, nor gained access to their set of practices and knowledge. The origins of these individuals varied greatly, and they constituted an extremely diverse cosmos, with varied cultural, reli- gious and linguistic backgrounds, building many dimensions of sociability, sharing knowledge and other cultural features. Foreigners, local inhabitants or those of mixed descent, these individuals represented the most diverse roles within or in the margins of the colonial structures. Whether merchants or ship-owners, whether surgeons, physicians, herbalists or missionaries, to say nothing of the village healers and midwives or just the curiosity collectors, such agents and their products and

  • SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DIM SUM LUNCH by Virginia Goff
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA DIM SUM LUNCH By Virginia Goff AND WHAT A GREAT DIM SUM LUNCHEON IT WAS !!! The Southern California members sat down to a very "unusual" Dim Sum Luncheon. I say this because the Marques sisters more than outdid themselves. Aurea Pereira, Alda Gosan and Rita Guterres used creativity to organize a luncheon that consisted of Dim Sum which in itself would have been plenty, but the Lunch that followed had plates of Duck, Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce, Kung Pao Beef, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce, Chow Mein HK Style to name but a few. Have you ever seen "class" in a Dim Sum Lunch? Well, this had "class" as we were all supplied with a specially printed Menu of what we were going to be served. Needless to say, we not only had our fill for some very healthy appetites but we had "bunches" to take home. Is this not reminiscent of Filomac affairs? What a tremendous and successful event these sisters provided! As far as the writer is concerned you have my vote, and all future events here in Southern California can be organized by Aurea, Alda and Rita. I believe Thelma Rodrigues who is now back in Southern California also had a hand in this. Kudos to the Marques!!! And welcome back Thelma and Tommy! The Southern California members met on August 18th, 2012 at the Great Seafood Harbor Restaurant - a terrific restaurant with very good food. We had quite a turn out; we usually do if the event is a Dim Sum Luncheon. I believe Aurea told me we had a total of 40 who showed up and that is a lot for us down here in the South.

  • 2005- Earthquakes
1 Earthquakes and the Coming of a Age of a Scientific Attitude in Portugal (1755-1791) Francisco António Lourenço VAZ Professor in the Department of History University of Évora • International Conference - 250Th Anniversary of the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake , Proceedings , p. 76-79 . ABSTRACT During the Enlightenment when in Europe rationalist optimism avowed the importance of science and technique to human happiness, the great 1755 Lisbon earthquake troubled human consciousness, brought fear and installed doubt. We can say that its mental consequences were devastating. In this context, the affirmation of a scientific mentality in Portugal had an important reference in the work of Ribeiro Sanches, Tratado da Conservaçam da Saude dos Povos (1757). This Portuguese scientist published his work after the earthquake. In there he made an inquiry of the most violent earthquakes in history. Ribeiro Sanches ideas had a remarkable influence on the Portuguese intellectual elite, namely to the necessity of asking about the phenomena real causes. He abandoned the traditional moral explanations such as the “violent passions”, “ the dissolute life” and other of this kind. In the present paper we will analyse the quarrel between two mentalities towards earthquakes: the traditional and the scientific. The traditional saw earthquakes as a divine punishment, arguing that men should pray to prevent this kind of disasters, while the scientific considered earthquakes as natural observable facts that could be eventually explained according to natural causes. We take as base some texts about the earthquake of Lisbon; especially the letters of D. Manuel do Cenáculo, where we can find accounts about the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and also the 1791 earthquake that took place in Southern Portugal.
