It is within the central part of the Kootenay Arc, a north-trending arcuate structural zone that lies east of the Shuswap MetamorphicComplex and merges in the east with the Purcell anticlinorium. Rocks within theRiondel area havebeen correlated with a Lower Paleozoic sequence exposed along the trend of the arc to the north and south. This sequence includes domi- nantlyquartzite andschist of theHamill Group, overlain by interlayered calcareous schist, quartzite, and marble of the Mohican Formation, a persistent and extensive Lower Cambrian marble, the Badshot Formation, and dominantly micaceous schist, calc-silicate gneiss, and amphibolite gneiss of the basal part of the Lardeau Group. The structure of the area is dominated by a series of west-dipping tight toisoclinal folds (Phase 2) that are superposed on the inverted underlimb ofan earlier recumbent anticlinal structure, named theRiondel nappe. -

January 2005 Citation: KVRI Burbot Committee. 2005. Kootenai River/Kootenay Lake Conservation Strategy. Prepared by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho with assistance from S. P. Cramer and Associates. 77 pp. plus appendices. Conservation strategies delineate reasonable actions that are believed necessary to protect, rehabilitate, and maintain species and populations that have been recognized as imperiled, but not federally listed as threatened or endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. This Strategy resulted from cooperative efforts of U.S. and Canadian Federal, Provincial, and State agencies, Native American Tribes, First Nations, local Elected Officials, Congressional and Governor’s staff, and other important resource stakeholders, including members of the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative. This Conservation Strategy does not necessarily represent the views or the official positions or approval of all individuals or agencies involved with its formulation. This Conservation Strategy is subject to modification as dictated by new findings, changes in species status, and the completion of conservation tasks. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho would like to thank the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative (KVRI) and the KVRI Burbot Committee for their contributions to this Burbot Conservation Strategy. Graphic, Textual 2.00 meters Title: R.B.A. Cragg fonds Dates of Creation: 1933-1979 Physical Description: ca. 80 cm of photographs, ca. 40 cm of negatives, ca. 4000 slides, and 1 cm of textual records Biographical Sketch: Richard Balderston Alec Cragg was born on December 5, 1912 in Minatitlan, Mexico while his father worked on a construction contract. In 1919 his family moved to Canada to settle. Cragg gained training as a printer and worked in various towns before being hired by the Kamloops Sentinel in 1944. Cragg worked for the Sentinel until his retirement at age 65, and continued to write a weekly opinion column entitled “By The Way” until shortly before his death. During his time in Kamloops Cragg was active in the Kamloops Museum Association, the International Typographical Union (acting as president on the Kamloops branch for a time), the BPO Elks Lodge Kamloops Branch, and the Rock Club. Cragg was married to Queenie Elizabeth Phillips, with whom he had one daughter (Karen). Richard Balderson Alec Cragg died on January 22, 1981 in Kamloops, B.C. at age 68. Scope and Content: Fonds consists predominantly of photographic materials created by R.B.A. Cragg during his time in Kamloops. Fonds also contains a small amount of textual ephemera collected by Cragg and his wife Queenie, such as ration books and souvenir programs. -

Geo., Lead, Runoff Forecasting, BC Hydro 1 EXecutiVE Summary Global climate change is upon us. Both natural cycles and anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions influence climate in British Columbia and the river flows that supply the vast majority of power that BC Hydro generates. BC Hydro’s climate action strategy addresses both the mitigation of climate change through reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, and adaptation to climate change by understanding the risks and magnitude of potential climatic changes to our business today and in the future. As part of its climate change adaptation strategy, BC Hydro has undertaken internal studies and worked with some of the world’s leading scientists in climatology, glaciology, and hydrology to determine how climate change affects water supply and the seasonal timing of reservoir inflows, and what we can expect in the future. Wetland Action Plan for British Columbia
Wetland Action Plan for British Columbia IAN BARNETT Ducks Unlimited Kamloops, 954 A Laval Crescent, Kamloops, BC, V2C 5P5, Canada, email [email protected] Abstract: In the fall of 2002, the Wetland Stewardship Partnership was formed to address the need for improved conservation of wetland ecosystems (including estuaries) in British Columbia. One of the first exercises undertaken by the Wetland Stewardship Partnership was the creation of a Wetland Action Plan. The Wetland Action Plan illustrates the extent of the province's wetlands, describes their value to British Columbians, assesses threats to wetlands, evaluates current conservation initiatives, and puts forth a set of specific actions and objectives to help mitigate wetland loss or degradation. It was determined that the most significant threats to wetlands usually come from urban expansion, industrial development, and agriculture. The Wetland Stewardship Partnership then examined which actions would most likely have the greatest positive influence on wetland conservation and restoration, and listed nine primary objectives, in order of priority, in a draft ‘Framework for Action’. Next, the partnership determined that meeting the first four of these objectives could be sufficient to provide meaningful and comprehensive wetland protection, and so, committed to working together towards enacting specific recommendations in relation to these objectives. These four priority objectives are as follows: (1) Work effectively with all levels of government to promote improved guidelines and stronger legislative frameworks to support wetlands conservation; (2) Provide practical information and recommendations on methods to reduce impacts to wetlands to urban, rural, and agricultural proponents who wish to undertake a development in a wetland area; (3) Improve the development and delivery of public education and stewardship programs that encourage conservation of wetlands, especially through partnerships; and (4) Conduct a conservation risk assessment to make the most current inventory information on the status of B.C. -

It would compare both the Balfour terminal and Queens Bay terminal. Kootenay Lake Ferry Map Kootenay Bay to Queens Bay sailing distance is 5.4 km Kootenay Bay to Balfour sailing distance is 8.8 km The Opportunity • Relocate the Balfour ferry terminal to QueensBay and improve safety, reduce emissions, improve service, reduce operating costs for 9,000,000 ferry users over the next 25 years. • In addition, a smaller ferry can be built and would be able, due to the significant reduction in crossing time, to surpass the car carrying capacity of the new proposed 60 car ferry during a major transportation disruption of the Kootenay Pass. • It would improve the economic and societal benefits in the Kootenay region Project Review Balfour terminal • A new ferry is required for both scenarios since the Balfour ferry needs to be decommissioned and the Osprey 2000 will need to be refurbished in 2023. • The Balfour ferry terminal needs to be refurbished, with a large parking lot extension over green space. Minor improvements at Kootenay Bay. • No significant improvement in service since travelling time remains the same.
