INTRODUCTION WATERS MK-1 Turkey, situated on a tectonically and magmatically active EKS-2 part of the eastern Mediterranean region, is represented by Ca+Mg extensive geothermal activity which is noticeable with numerous geothermal areas throughout the country (Mutlu Na+K and Güleç, 1998). The Balıkesir region in northwestern MK-2 Anatolia is one of the promising geothermal provinces in SLK-1 Turkey (Figure 1). Thermal waters in this region with discharge rates ranging from 1.5 to 75 l/sec and temperatures up to 98ºC are used for greenhouse, house heating and EKS-1 therapeutic purposes. In the region, application of central heating was initiated in the Gönen area in 1984 and has been expanded to include the Edremit and Bigadiç areas (Mutlu, 50 2007). 0 050HCO 3 +CO3 Figure 2: Langelier-Ludwig diagram for the Balıkesir thermal waters. The Bigadiç and Sındırgı areas are characterized by Na- HCO3 type waters. The Ekşidere thermal water is of Ca- HCO3 type and, the Manyas and Susurluk fields are represented with Na-Ca-HCO3 type waters. Low chloride concentrations in hot waters may indicate that water circulation in most of geothermal areas is shallow. Surprisingly, cold waters from Ekşidere (EKS-2 and EKS-3) in the Gönen area also yield SO4-enriched trends. At first glance, the SO4-rich nature of waters may be attributed to steam-heated process (e.g. oxidation of H S), however, since Figure 1: Geological map of the Balıkesir region showing 2 pH values of most of the samples are well above 7, this may studied geothermal areas (simplified from Mutlu, not to be the case. Dissertation Advisor: Catherine Evtuhov, Ph. D. ABSTRACT Based upon a reading of Ottoman, Russian, and Bulgarian archival documents, this dissertation examines the response by the Ottoman and Russian states to the accelerated pace of migration and spread of disease in the Black Sea region from the outbreak of the Russo-Ottoman War of 1768-1774 to the signing of the Treaty of Hünkar Iskelesi in 1833. Building upon introductory chapters on the Russian-Ottoman Black Sea frontier and a case study of Bulgarian population movements between the Russian and Ottoman Empires, this dissertation analyzes Russian and Ottoman migration and settlement policies, the spread of epidemic diseases (plague and cholera) in the Black Sea region, the construction of quarantines and the implementation of travel document regimes. The role and position of the Danubian Principalities of Moldavia and Wallachia as the “middle ground” between the Ottoman and Russian Empires
