Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer. -

Leadership and Legacy
Leadership and Legacy Upstanding in a Time of Crisis: Leadership Toward Solutions and Embracing Opportunities Presentation by Ross C. “Rocky” Anderson Former Salt Lake City Mayor and President, High Road for Human Rights ICLEI Local Action Summit Albuquerque Convention Center Albuquerque, New Mexico May 15, 2008 Leadership. People who will stand up. Never before has our nation, and our world, been in greater need of competent, principled, knowledgeable, far-sighted, non-partisan, inspiring leadership. And never before have we been in such need of what Samantha Power calls “upstanders” – people who will stand up and fight effectively and honestly for solutions, rather than cower in fear of rocking the boat. Our nation invaded and attacked a country that posed absolutely no security threat to us – all on the basis of a gargantuan fraud. And it did so without a plan as to what we would do after the invasion. (Sounds like our nation’s energy policy!). At a time when the US is investing only $5 billion per year in research and development of alternative energy sources, we are pouring $12 billion per month into the big, black hole of disastrous military occupation in Iraq – creating more hostility, more hatred, more terrorism every day we are viewed by the Muslim world as an occupying force. It’s bad enough that we have such a dismal lack of leadership in the White House, but what do the so-called “leaders” in Congress do? These traitors to our Constitution and the rule of law snipe, they complain, they play the worst sorts of politics, but they don’t stand up. -

An Appreciation of John Balaban
JOHN GRISWOLD “Praise to Those Still Coming Through On Song”: An Appreciation of John Balaban was born American in a little clinic in Saigon, Vietnam, on Ho Chi Minh’s birthday. My dad had been sent to Vietnam—as he was to be sent to Afghanistan later—by Southern Illinois University Carbondale, as Ipart of an Agency for International Development (USAID) team. In Saigon, he was assigned to Phu Tho National Institute of Technology but “got around quite a bit,” flying by four-person Pipers to cities in the Delta to help small industry. My mom, who’d been an elementary teacher stateside, taught English in Saigon. We lived in a new subdivision owned and operated by the U.S. Embassy, JDP Compound, across from Tan Son Nhut Airport. Single-family homes were built on stilts, over carports, and had big backyards. There was no rent. We had a maid who also cooked meals, and a driver we shared with other residents. My pigtailed sister had a pet monkey and rode to school in a bus with grenade screens over the windows. The compound itself had no walls around it. My mom said my dad kept a small pistol in the nightstand in case of guerilla attack, but she laughed that he was such a sound sleeper that they would have carried him off on the mattress without him waking. My mom loved her job and Saigon, which she rarely got to leave. She spent her spare time sightseeing and shopping the stores and markets downtown and in Cholon, the ethnic Chinese district.
