The David Lynch Foundation for Consciousness-Based Education and World Peace was first set up by Lynch in the USA in 2005, and in 2012 the foundation was established here in the UK. Its aim is to ensure that any child who wants to learn and practise the Transcendental Meditation programme can do so. TM is the most thoroughly researched and widely practiced programme in the world for developing the full creative potential of the brain and mind, improving health, reducing stress, and improving academic outcomes. The DLF UK also works with stressed teachers, the homeless, prisoners and the many thousands of war veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Award-winning director, writer and producer, David Lynch, has been “diving within” through the Transcendental Meditation technique for over 3o years.

Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer.

    The Hollyridge Strings The Hollyridge Strings were an in-house act released by Capitol Records. Throughout the 1960's, they were perhaps best known for their instrumental versions of Beatles songs. In fact, so popular was their first album that an album exists by "The Mustangs" whose cover is a take- off of the cover to the first instrumental Beatles album by the Strings. Stu Phillips arranged and conducted the first three volumes, plus the album with solo songs on it. Perry Botkin, Jr. and Mort Garson did the honors on volume four, but Garson alone did the job on volume five. Botkin had previously conducted the Strings some years before.
