Read Full License Page 1/14 Abstract Landslide is a chronic problem that causes severe geographical hazard due to development activities and exploitation of the hilly region and it occurs due to heavy and prolongs rain ow in the mountainous area. Initially, a total of 726 locations were identied at devikulam taluk, Idukki district (India). These landslide potential points utilised to construct a spatial database. Then, the geo spatial database is then split randomly into 70% for training the models and 30% for the model validation. This work considers Seven landslide triggering factors for landslide susceptibility mapping. The susceptibility maps were veried using various evaluation metrics. The metrics are sensitivity, specicity, accuracy, precision, Recall, Matthews correlation ecient (MCE), Area Under the Curve (AUC), Kappa statistics, Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Square Error (MSE).The proposed work with 5 advanced machine learning approaches assess the landslide vulnerability.It includes Logistic Regression (LR), K Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Decision tree classier, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Gaussian Naïve Bayes modelling and comparing their performance for the spatial forecast of landslide possibilities in the Devikulam taluk.

Existing literature often examines the role of social identity of groups in inducing conflict in heterogeneous societies. This article puts forward the view that the role of identity is not limited in terms of inducing conflict, but it also plays a vital role in influencing the dynamics of conflict. Based on this conceptual framework, the article outlines the conflict dynamics observable in the Kannan Devan Hills village in Kerala, where several factors, over the course of time in the last century, have led to the perception of conflict between the Tamils and the Malayalis. As a major objective, the article identifies the issues and processes of social interaction between the two groups that necessarily influence the nature of the conflict. The article identifies that the conflict between the two communities, though mostly latent, can be seen through three important aspects: assertion, negotiation and subjugation of identities. Through assertion of identity, the conflict is perceived over ethnic lines, whereas the process of negotiation and subjugation of identity constantly undermines the ethnic nature of conflict to specific grievances, thus giving insight into the dynamic nature of the conflict. This hilly area which is a hub of a wide variety of flora and fauna, has been suffering from slope stability issues due to heavy rainfall. A well-established landslide early warning system for the region is the need of the hour, considering the recent landslide disasters in 2018 and 2019. This study is an attempt to define a regional scale rainfall threshold for landslide occurrence in Idukki district, as the first step of establishing a landslide early warning system. Using the rainfall and 0.16 landslide database from 2010 to 2018, an intensity-duration threshold was derived as I = 0.9D− for the Idukki district. The effect of antecedent rainfall conditions in triggering landslide events was explored in detail using cumulative rainfalls of 3 days, 10 days, 20 days, 30 days, and 40 days prior to failure. As the number of days prior to landslide increases, the distribution of landslide events shifts towards antecedent rainfall conditions. The biasness increased from 72.12% to 99.56% when the number of days was increased from 3 to 40. The derived equations can be used along with a rainfall forecasting system for landslide early warning in the study region.

Garg and Prodyut Bhattacharya University School of Environment Management, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, Sector- 16C, Dwarka, New Delhi - 110075, India *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract This study was undertaken to evaluate the spatial as well as the temporal changes in land use/ land cover in Devikulam Taluk, Idukki District, Kerala, and to assess the effects of increasing anthropogenic pressure on the fragile ecosystem of this area. For analysis, land use/ land cover maps of four different years, i.e., 1988, 1999, 2008 and 2017, were generated using LANDSAT TM (Thematic Mapper), ETM+ (Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus) and OLI/TIRS (Operational Land Imager/Thermal InfraRed Sensor) satellite imagery. The results of the study suggested that there has been a drastic increase in the built-up area and a continuous decline in the forest area in Devikulam from 35.31 km2 built-up in 1988 to 73.92 km2 in 2017, and 1374.52 km2 forest in 1988 to 1247.24 km2 in 2017, respectively. Over this period of approximately 40 years, around 47.85 km2 area of the forest got converted to built-up. This could be due to the increasing anthropogenic pressure in terms of migration or booming tourism contributing to the increased demand for infrastructures. Therefore, appropriate land use planning is a fundamental step towards the sustainable development of this biogeographically rich and unique area of Devikulam Taluk.

The problem is to use land for what it is fit for according to the capabilities of soil and to raise the soil fertility and moisture and take the maximum output that it is capable of. Man still gets nearly all his food from the soil, less than one percent of what he eats being fish. Apart from the possible development of food producing resources other than land, the potential food supply depends on the amount of land suitable for food production and on the possibilities of increasing yields per unit of such land. Land suitability is the ability of a given type of land to support a defined use. The area selected for the present study is Devikulam taluk in Idukki district, Kerala. Physiographically the study area is diverse in nature. The study area is famous for tea production, Jaggery production, sandal wood and cool climate vegetables and fruits cultivation. Unscientific cultivation followed in certain part of study areas leads to fertile soil erosion, and less production. The eroded soil sometimes deposited in the low land paddy fields. Because of these, cultivation become difficult and less profitable in the study area. Monsoon failure, poor groundwater, eucalyptus cultivation near the crop land, land conversion and land fragmentation put the primary activity in a great stress.

The present study conducted in Devikulam taluk is situated on the western slope of the Western Ghats in Idukki district, Kerala. Since the entire population of the taluk is living in rural areas, it can be termed as a rural taluk. The main source of livelihood is plantation agriculture and allied activities. In spite of that, plantation (mainly tea), tea processing, jiggery processing, lemongrass oil extraction and tourism are the dominant economical activity in this study area. Occupational characteristics were mainly collected from Idukki district census handbook for the years 1971 to 2011.
