This year, the choir visited stores near Springfield and sang at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals of CoxHealth, which serves more than 100,000 children each year. In 2013, 28 percent of its Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals funding came from 43 Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs, including $13,376 from Store 2702. Tim Siebert, the group’s executive director, says, “Think how many hearing aids, prescription drugs, wheelchairs, and services that can provide. I appreciate what these stores mean to us and the inspiration the choir brings.” Denver agrees. “The choir exemplifies what Walmart stands for and shows how associates care about the communities and the people they help.”

Break for Veterans As I was reading the August Walmart World, I especially liked the “Striving for Excellence” story about associates at Store 3757 in Arlington, Wash., who banded together to help local mudslide victims. These stories inspire others to do good in their communities in a Sam-like fashion. I have another Sam-like story: Our market HR manager, Charles Patterson, ran a breakroom-decorating contest. But I’m still involved in their lives. I love being there for them, helping them grow into productive citizens. It’s something I learned from my grandmother. I was one of 16 grandchildren, but she made me feel special. I’m continuing her legacy by using the cooking skills she passed on to me to help feed soldiers on Sundays with the Free Day Away program. We host soldiers from Fort Leonard Wood at our church, where they get a home-cooked meal and time to relax a little. I’ve been involved for 11 years and only miss a Sunday when I have to be out of town.

Help Where It Matters My Walmart career helps me make giving to others a priority. In addition to working at a store close to Chris and his sisters, I have every Sunday off. The regional manager approved the schedule, seeing the good we were doing with Free Day Away. Occasionally, Walmart donates money for food, too. When people ask me how I do it, giving up my time, I tell them I’m not giving up anything. Instead, I’m getting so much from seeing the gratitude in the faces of those I’m helping.

I have raised thousands of dollars for multiple sclerosis and diabetes research and outreach through participation in races—5- and 10-kilometer races and half-marathons. It’s exhilarating to push your body to its limits, knowing it’s for a good cause.

A New Way to Give Five years ago, my doctor told me I had to stop running— it was taking a toll on my body—but I wasn’t going to stop being active. I’ve since put more than 2,000 miles on a recumbent bike, most recently in the Bike MS Wyoming 2014, which was a roughly 150-mile ride from Sundance, Wyo., to Spearfish, S.D. The events are a fun way for me to help causes I care about. I appreciate the support I receive from Walmart as well. The company has given $2,000 in grants in support of my efforts, and I also receive support from associates. This is my way of life—and it feels great to carry on my family’s history of helping.

Giving Back at Work Adjusting to life as a civilian was difficult, but my job at Walmart helped. In my last position as personnel manager at Store 5034 in Fort Myers, Fla., I helped give other veterans the sense of community and structure I needed when I first got out. Walmart is a strong supporter of our military, and our recent veterans hiring commitment is great. This program gives veterans comfort in knowing they’ll have a job to go home to. Sometimes getting a job is just the beginning. There are many things veterans deal with as they transition into civilian life, and I can help because I’ve been through the same adjustment. The 30 to 40 veterans I’ve hired over 10 years feel comfortable talking with me, because I understand what they feel.

Blaze Battled, Family Saved Larkin Anderson helps his community in an inspiring way—by saving lives.

“When I help someone, it makes my day,” says Larkin Anderson, an asset protection associate at Store 1027 in Concord, N.C. And this past July, Larkin also made a whole family’s day when he helped save their lives during a house fire. Who Wants Larkin is a captain with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg (N.C.) Fire Department, and he had just finished one run when he was called to the fire where the family was trapped inside. The crew arrived to find smoke billowing out of windows. Since 2008, we've partnered with Wreaths Across America (WAA) to place wreaths on veterans’ graves in national cemeteries, another outcome of our longstanding support of our military members. This year, roughly 100 Walmart drivers will volunteer to deliver wreaths to 50 cemeteries in 12 states, according to Patrick Simmons, senior director, Transportation, for Region 10, Northeast U.S., and a WAA board member and U.S. Army veteran. Associates will lay roughly 30,000 wreaths, he adds, including on the graves of Sam Walton, a World War II veteran, and his son John, a Vietnam veteran, both laid to rest in Bentonville, Ark. “Supporting Wreaths Across America is a wonderful way to give back to the local community,” Patrick says. “The act of laying a memorial wreath honors those who have given so much for the freedoms we all enjoy.”

Wreaths Across America donated these wreaths to Walmart World. They are the same type of wreath that will be placed on veterans’ graves.

SAM WALTON TAUGHT ME: Associates are capable of extraordinary things.

WHEN I MET HIM: We were preparing for the grand opening of Store 1501 in Carollwood, Fla., in 1990, and Sam flew in to meet associates and walk the store.
