Fl. 2: 769. 1902. Perennial or annual herbs or woody plants of tropical or temperate forests and wetlands. Rhizomes present or lacking. Stems erect or decumbent (some times rooting at the lower nodes); nodes glabrous, pubescent, or puberulent. Leaves several to many, glabrous to sparsely pubescent (microhairs bicellular); leaf sheaths about as long as the blades, open for over tf2 their length, glabrous; ligules wider than long, entire or fimbriate; blades petiolate or sessile, elliptic to linear, acute to acuminate, the primary veins parallel to-or forming an angle of 5-10• wi th-the midvein, transverse veinlets numerous, usually con spicuous, giving leaf surface a tessellate appearance; chlorenchyma not radiate (i.e., non-kranz; photosynthetic pathway C.,). -

Tom Soderstrom, a dynamic young curator who was just discovering the fascinating world of bamboo, invited Cleo to conduct research at the grass herbarium. At that time, Tom’s inter - est was focused on herbaceous bamboos, espe - cially those in the tribe Olyreae. Dr. Floyd McClure was working on woody bamboos in the Grass Lab at the same time, so their research was complementary. And Agnes Chase, the Honorary Curator of Grasses, was still actively curating the grass collection until shortly before her death in September of 1963, so Cleo would have met her as well. -

I agree that library of the University of Dublin, Trinity College may lend or copy this thesis subject to the source being acknowledged. _______________________ Atchara Teerawatananon II Abstract This thesis has provided a comprehensive taxonomic account of tribe Arundinelleae, and subtribes Chionachninae, Dimeriinae and Germainiinae of the tribe Andropogoneae in Thailand. Complete floristic treatments of these taxa have been completed for the Flora of Thailand project. Keys to genera and species, species descriptions, synonyms, typifications, illustrations, distribution maps and lists of specimens examined, are also presented. Fourteen species and three genera of tribe Arundinelleae, three species and two genera of subtribe Chionachninae, seven species of subtribe Dimeriinae, and twelve species and two genera of Germainiinae, were recorded in Thailand, of which Garnotia ciliata and Jansenella griffithiana were recorded for the first time for Thailand. Three endemic grasses, Arundinella kerrii, A. kokutensis and Dimeria kerrii were described as new species to science. Phylogenetic relationships among major subfamilies in Poaceae and among major tribes within Panicoideae were evaluated using parsimony analysis of plastid DNA regions, trnL-F and atpB- rbcL, and a nuclear ribosomal DNA region, ITS. -

NUMBERS 2701-3400. INVENTORY OF FOREIGN SEEDS AND PLANTS. INTRODUCTORY STATEMENT. The present inventoiy or catalogue of seeds and plants includes the collections of the agricultural explorers of the Section of Seed and Plant Introduction, as well as a large number of donations from mis- cellaneous sources. There are a series of new and interesting vege- tables, field crops, ornamentals, and forage plants secured by Mr. Walter T. Swingle in France, Algeria, and Asia Minor. Another important exploration was that conducted by Mr. Mark A. Carleton, an assistant in the Division of Vegetable Physiology and Pathology. The wheats and other cereals were published in Inventoiy No. 4, but notices of many of Mr. Carleton\s miscellaneous importations are printed here for the first time. The fruits and ornamentals collected by Dr. Seaton A. Knapp in Japan are here listed, together with a number of Chinese seeds from the Yangtze Valley, presented by Mr. G. D. Brill, of Wuchang. Perhaps the most important items are the series of tropical and subtropical seeds and plants secured through the indefatigable efforts of Hon. Barbour Lathrop, of Chicago. Mr. Lathrop, accompanied by Mr. David G. Fairchild, formerly in charge of the Section of Seed and Plant Introduction, conducted at his own expense an extended exploration through the West Indies, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Brazil, and Argentina, and procured many extremely valuable seeds and plants, some of which had never been previously introduced into this country. -

KEW BULLETIN 62: 355–373 (2007) 355 A century of progress in grass systematics Khidir W. Hilu1 Summary. This paper presents an overview of progress in grass systematics with a focus on the past century and assesses its current status and future outlook. In concert with systematic biology, progress in grass systematics has gone through some leaps caused by the introduction of new approaches or emphasis on existing ones. Chromosome cytology, anatomy and chemistry provided useful information, but major recent contributions have come from advances in bioinformatics and molecular biology. Consequently, grass systematics has moved from an initial intuitive classification and phylogenetics to one incorporating analytical phenetic approaches, and culminating in the current stage of analytic phylogeny. As a result, a refined picture of grass phylogeny is emerging with good resolution at the base, but the tree lacks robustness in some places such as the monophyly of the “BEP” subfamilies and the relationships within the PACCAD clade. Systematic structure of a number of subfamilies is better understood now, but further studies are needed. With the rapid advancement in molecular systematic and bioinformatic tools, and in conjunction with a wealth of literature available on structural characters, a more refined picture of grass taxonomy and evolution is expected. However, caution needs to be exercised in our interpretations to avoid hasty decisions that can translate into regress rather than progress. This is an exciting time in the history of grass systematics and, undoubtedly, is a period of collaborative rather than individual effort. Key words. Chromosome counts were established for 11 Algerian populations and three supplementary populations from Italy, Spain and Greece. The karyotypes were characterized by chromosome markers obtained using fluorescence in situ hybridization and fluorochrome bandings. The organization of 5S and 18S-5.8S-26S (35S) rDNA was studied in both cytotypes. Six signals of 35S and 2 signals of 5S were observed in 2n=16 population, while 10 signals of 35S and 4 signals of 5S were detected in the population with 2n=40. All 35S loci were also strongly marked by chromomycin, but negatively stained by Hoechst, which indicates the presence of GC rich DNA in rDNA regions. The B chromosomes were found in both cytotypes, bearing a 35S locus in 2n=16 population. -
