CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Introduction and Purpose Ottawa Sands, Ottawa County Parks, consists of 345 acres including an 80-acre inland lake, natural forests, coastal dunes, intermittent wetlands, inundated shrub swamp, and riparian marsh, shrub, and swamp communities. The eleven natural plant communities occurring on the site are listed along with hundreds of associated plant and animal species. - Ottawa Sands is located near the mouth of the Grand River in sections 17, 18 and 20 of Spring Lake Township, Ottawa County, in Western Michigan. - Property includes 5,585 feet of Grand River frontage. - A Floristic Quality Assessment demonstrates that a diverse and extremely high-quality plant component exists at Ottawa Sands. Purpose - To gain an understanding of the vegetative plant communities and flora of western Ottawa County and central west Michigan area. -
Characteristics of Mixed-Oak Forest Ecosystems in Southern Ohio Prior to the Reintroduction of Fire
United States Department of Characteristics of Mixed-Oak Agriculture Forest Service Forest Ecosystems in Northeastern Research Station Southern Ohio Prior to the General Technical Reintroduction of Fire Report NE-299 Abstract Mixed-oak forests occupied much of the Unglaciated Allegheny Plateau region of southern Ohio at the onset of Euro-American settlement (ca. 1800). Historically, Native Americans used fire to manage the landscape and fire was frequent throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries during extensive forest harvesting and then re-growth. Today, though mixed-oak forests remain dominant across much of the region, oak regeneration is often poor as other tree species (e.g., maples) are becoming much more abundant. This shift has occurred concurrently with fire suppression policies that began in 1923. A multidisciplinary experiment was initiated in southern Ohio to explore the use of prescribed fire as a tool to improve the sustainability of mixed-oak forests. This report describes the experimental design and study areas, and provides baseline data on ecosystem characteristics prior to prescribed fire treatments. Chapters describe forest history, an integrated moisture index, geology and soils, understory light environments, understory vegetation, tree regeneration, overstory vegetation, foliar nutrient status, arthropods, and breeding birds. I hope those of you who did not participate in 1972 will consider sending at least a few sentences to your zone co ordinator this coming winter, especially with information you feel is most important and useful. I will not try to "summarize the summaries," except to say that the climatic conditions seem to have varied from one general area to the next, and that, while some areas suffered retardation or stifling of normal populations, collecting was gener ally fairly good. A number of new state or provincial records are included, so be on the lookout for these. Finally, Langston reports for an area--not included in the past: Hawaii. -
QUBS Moth & Butterfly Species
Queen’s University Biological Station Species List: Butterflies and Moths The current list has been compiled by Dr. Ivy Schoepf, QUBS Research Coordinator, in 2018 and includes data gathered by direct observation, collected by researchers at the station and/or assembled using digital distribution maps. The list is based on a previous list of moths created by Kit E. Muma in June 2008 and of butterflies created by Mark Conboy in March 2011; and has been updated using resources from The Natural Heritage Information Centre (April 2018); The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (February 2018); iNaturalist and GBIF. Sixty-nine species-group taxa are downgraded to junior synonyms or subspecies (stat. n., syn. rev., and syn. n.), and 6 genera relegated to synonymy. -

Wilkinson The Michigan Entomological Society traces its origins to the old Detroit Entomological Society and was organized on 4 November 1954 to ". promote the science of entomology in all its branches and by all feasible means, and to advance cooperation and good fellowship among persons interested in entomology." The Society attempts to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information in both amateur and professional circles, and encourages the study of insects by youth. Membership in the Society, which serves the North Central States and adjacent Canada, is open to all persons interested in entomology. There are three paying classes of membership: Student (including those currently enrolled in college or graduate programs) - annual dues $2.00 Active - annual dues $4.00 Institutional - annual dues $6.00 Sustaining - annual contribution $1-5 .OO or more Dues are paid on a calendar year basis (Jan. 1-Dec. 31) Memberships accepted before July 1 shall begn on the preceding January 1 ; memberships accepted at a later date shall begin the following January 1 unless the earlier date is requested and the required dues are paid. All members in good standing receive the Newsletter of the Society, published quarterly. All Active and Sustaining Members may vote in Society affairs. All dues and contributions to the Society are deductible for Federal income tax purposes. SUBSCRIPTION INFORMA'TION Institutions and organizations, as well as individuals not desiring the benefits of membership, may subscribe to Tlze Michigan Entomologisr at the rate of $6.00 per volurne.
