SOME GENERAL ADVICE Despite the beauty of the mountains you should bear in mind that this is hazardous terrain. Never plan a mountain tour without suitable equipment! Mountain boots and rain protection are extremely important. You are specifi cally advised not to undertake a mountain tour in poor weather and fog. Keep to the signposted trails! Tell your accommodation provider where you are hiking to and when you expect to be back. Start off on easy walking paths or trails and progress gradually to more diffi cult ones. Report Alpine accidents to the mountain rescue services in St Leonhard, Plangeroß, Jerzens, Wenns and Arzl. Call 140 in emergencies. Please help to keep our environment clean.

HARBEWEIHER POND – PRETTY AS A LANDSCAPE PAINTING, WENNS-PILLER It would be hard to paint a more beautiful picture. Harbeweiher pond nestles harmoniously in the countryside around the Piller Höhe, an area steeped in history. Starting from the Gachen Blick or Nature Park Centre (which has parking spaces), a circular hiking trail roughly 7 km long brings the visitor to one of the most pristine ponds in the Pitztal. The pond is fed by an almost 3 ha large biotope in the area around the Aifner. The Harbeweiher pond is situated about 1,640 m above sea level and was created primarily to serve the mill above the hamlet of Puschlin. It also acts as a source of irrigation for the hamlet and its surroundings. In these unspoilt surroundings people once lived in a house from around 1634 to 1880; the ruins of the structure were care- fully dismantled in 1965. Today there is nothing left to remind us of the fact that people once lived at the Harbeweiher, leaving the visitor to enjoy the complete tranquillity and majesty of the landscape. The discovery of Ötzi the Iceman shows that humans already crossed the Ötztal Alps over 9000 years ago, after the end of the Ice Age. They hunted game, used the high pastures above the Alpine tree line and even extended them with the slash- and burn method. Later, they used some of them as mountain pastures, which were also in parts irrigated since the Bronze Age.

Since humans, by the Middle Bronze Age (15th century BC), sacri- fi ced animals and fi eld crops on the prehistoric sanctuary on the Piller mountain saddle discovered in 1992, it can be assumed that the people of this age settled in the lower Pitztal valley and occasio- nally advanced into the inner valley. The fi rst known tribe settling in Pitztal was the Breonen tribe, which belongs to the Räter tribe. Under Roman reign the area was largely romanized and the Christian belief spread. The determining settlement took place around 600 AD by the Bajuwaren (today’s Bavaria), which mixed with the existing populati- on on the fertile terraces of the lower valley. As of the 11th century, the strong population increase led to extensive wood clearings until the 14th century. Toponyms such as Wald, Brennwald, Matzlewald and Scheibrand still refer to this today. Due to the custom of dividing the estate, whereby each child inherited one part of the parental farm estate, the once profi table farms where so fragmented that after only a few generations even in good harvest years, the farms

Pitztal boasts a diverse and -rich fl ora and fauna. Those who set out to explore will fi nd an impressive variety of areas ranging from the moorland on the Piller mountain saddle to the wetland and the world of Glaciers. Depending on altitude and terrain, the forest stand consists of larch trees, pine varieties and some rare foliage trees (trembling poplar, European rowan). Smaller noteworthy varieties are the mountain juniper and the savin juniper. Besides its economic use, Pitztal’s have special importance as a protective forest. Pitztal accommodates a species-rich game population. Apart from roe and red deer and chamois, it is the habitat of a European moufl on colony and of the Alpine ibex, which has been reintroduced since 1953. Mountain cocks, bearded vultures and marmots complete GEOGRAPHY the variety. The Pitztal valley is a southern tributary valley of the Inn valley. It continues along the township of St Leonhard with its many hamlets (with 22 km it is the forth-longest township of Austria) passing more than 40 roaring waterfalls up to Mittelberg (1,740 m). Here the valley branches off into the Mittelbergtal and the Taschachtal valleys. They lead directly on to the magnifi cent world of glaciers with the Wildspitze (3,774 m), the highest mountain of Tyrol, towering above.
