  • Is Online Discussion a Viable Strategy for Higher
Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities 155 EXPLORING GENDER STEREOTYPES IN MEDIA ADVERTS: A MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS Tazanfal Tehseem* Masroor Sibtain** Zara Obaid*** Abstract This paper aims at identifying socio-cultural portrayal of women through representational, interactive and compositional meanings with a focus on gender stereotypes propagated by media advertisements in Pakistan. Media adverts as such are an instrumental tool for manipulating attitudes and behavior of large and diverse audience for example, a large body of data reveals that women are portrayed in media to stylize their physical attributes to tempt and persuade customers. Therefore, advertisements are instrumental in creating a certain mind-set by shaping an ideology through highlighting the hegemonic representation of men and sexual objectification of women for creating an erotic fantasy. The data for the study comprises print media adverts which were randomly collected to have primarily advertised Pakistan TV morning shows, home products and cosmetics and have been selected on an assumption that they embody a socio-cultural perspective. The findings show that the selected adverts project the world of male chauvinism where women are shown as the facilitating sexual objects. Keywords: Media adverts, multimodal discourse analysis, hegemonic ideology, and sexual objectification Introduction This research explores Pakistani advertisements being used as a medium for defining gender roles in society. It particularly analyzes the aspect of sexual objectification of women in adverts where women are used as a commodity to increase the appeal of a product, or as subservient to men. The study is significant in identifying what major semiotic resource systems Pakistani advertisers deploy for disseminating a particular ideology and enhancing stereotypical representation of women in Pakistan.

  • Talk Shows in Pakistan TV Culture: Engaging Women As Cultural Citizens
Feminist Encounters: A Journal of Critical Studies in Culture and Politics, 2(1), 08 ISSN: 2542-4920 Talk Shows in Pakistan TV Culture: Engaging Women as Cultural Citizens Munira Cheema 1* Published: March 19, 2018 ABSTRACT Gendered content that travels through popular TV in Pakistan highlights gender-based crimes and allows women access to the mediated public sphere. This is an unprecedented form of access in a society that defines public/private through Shariah. The boundaries between the two spheres have thus far been immutable. Recent changes in the media landscape have made these boundaries porous. Drawing on theoretical debates on popular culture, cultural citizenship and counter public sphere, the study argues that these popular cultural spaces can be read in terms of an emerging feminist public sphere where women can engage as members of the public and as cultural citizens. To determine engagement patterns of young viewers, focus groups turned out to be effective method. In the sample of university students, there were 42 participants in 10 groups with 4 to 6 members in each group. The study finds that gendered content allows women to act in pro-civic ways. Their engagement with this content allows viewers to revisit their intersecting identities as Muslims, women and Pakistanis. Keywords: cultural citizenship, shariah, Pakistan, talk show, women audiences INTRODUCTION In the last decade, the Pakistani media landscape has significantly changed. Up until 2002, Pakistani audiences were largely (if not entirely) relying on state TV (PTV) for news and entertainment (c.f. Ali, 1986). In 2002, the Pakistani government liberalised the media by issuing licences to private broadcasters.

It is the man with a single idea who creates political and social revolutions, establishes empires and gives law to the world.”Allama Iqbal (R.A.) O Allah, grant us this piece of land where we would be able to live our lives in accordance with the laws given to us by You in the Qur‟an, and exemplified for us by the most revered and beloved, Syyedina RasulAllah (pbuh). This was the prayer throbbing in every true Muslim‟s heart in the pre-partition subcontinent, and then with eager ears and tearful eyes, they ultimately heard the announcement: “This is radio Pakistan.” Thus began the largest migration recorded in history and the heavens also witnessed the most brutal massacre of humanity ever.
