SAINTS CELEBRATED THIS WEEK November 9th – The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica On this day, the Church celebrates the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, the oldest and highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father, the Bishop of Rome, not St. Peter's Basilica, as so many mistakenly believe. The Basilica is also called the Church of Holy Savior or the Church of St. John the Baptist. In ancient Rome, this was the church where everyone was baptized. It is the oldest church in the West, built in the time of Constantine and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester in 324. November 10th – St. Leo the Great, Pope & Doctor of the Church (+461) On November 10th, the Church celebrates the memorial of St. Leo the Great, pope and doctor, during whose pontificate the Council of Chalcedon (451) defined that Christ is one divine person with two natures, divine and human. It was a confirmation of his Epistola Dogmatica (Tomus) to the Patriarch Flavian of Constantinople. He vigorously defended the unity of the Church and restrained the onrush of the barbarians under Attila. Source: catholicculture.org/culture/liturgicalyear/calendar/day.cfm?date=2020-11-10

November 11th – St. Martin of Tours (1579-1639)) He was the son of a freed woman of Panama, probably black but also possibly of indigenous stock, and a Spanish grandee of Lima, Peru. His parents never married each other. When he was 12, his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. Martin learned how to cut hair and how to draw blood—a standard medical treatment then—care for wounds and prepare and administer medicines. After a few years in this medical apostolate, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a “lay helper,” not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer and penance, charity, and humility, led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer and penitential practices; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive that he treated all people regardless of their color, race, or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa, and managed the daily alms of the priory with practicality, as well as generosity. November 12th – St. Josaphat (1580-1623) In 1595, the Orthodox bishop of Brest-Litovsk in present-day Belarus and five other bishops representing millions of Ruthenians, sought reunion with Rome. John Kunsevich—who took the name Josaphat in religious life—was to dedicate his life and die for the same cause. Born in what is now Ukraine, he went to work in Wilno and was influenced by clergy adhering to the 1596 Union of Brest. He became a Basilian monk, then a priest, and soon was well known as a preacher and an ascetic. He became bishop of Vitebsk at a relatively young age and faced a difficult situation. Most monks, fearing interference in liturgy and customs, did not want union with Rome. By synods, catechetical instruction, reform of the clergy, and personal example, however, Josaphat was successful in winning the greater part of the Orthodox in that area to the union. November 13th – St. Frances Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917) At the urging of Pope Leo XIII, Frances traveled with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants. She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop advised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop’s residence more determined to establish it. And she did. In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, abandoned, uneducated and sick. Want to learn a tidbit or two? Part One - THE PROFESSION OF FAITH, Section One – “I Believe – We Believe” Chapter Two – God Comes to Meet Man, Article One – The Revelation of God II. The Stages of Revelation – In the beginning God makes himself known 54 "God, who creates and conserves all things by his Word, provides men with constant evidence of himself in created realities. and furthermore, wishing to open up the way to heavenly salvation - he manifested himself to our first parents from the very beginning." (DV 3; cf. Jn 1:3, Rom 1:19-2) He invited them to intimate communion with himself and clothed them with resplendent grace and justice. 55 This revelation was not broken off by our first parents' sin. "After the fall, (God) buoyed them up with the hope of salvation, by promising redemption; and he has never ceased to show his solicitude for the human race. For he wishes to give eternal life to all those who seek salvation by patience in well-doing." Even when he disobeyed you and lost your friendship you did not abandon him to the power of death. Again, and again you offered a covenant to man. The covenant with Noah. (Roman Missal, Eucharistic Prayer IV, 118.) Psalm Response “My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord, my God.”

Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
