2016 Scorecard Board of Trustees April 13, 2016 How are we doing?

One doesn’t have to work at Ohlone, or be a student at Ohlone, for very long to think, “Hey, this is a pretty good college.” But when those intuitive beliefs can be validated by evidence, there is a certain sense of satisfaction and pride in our hard work and accomplishment.

The 2016 Scorecard validates that Ohlone College not only is a peer of the premier community colleges in , but also generally performs at the highest levels among those peer colleges. Completions Percentage of degree and/or transfer-seeking students tracked for six years through 2014-15 who completed a degree, certificate, or transfer related outcomes.

Consortium influence – This metric measures students who have taken several courses in a CTE discipline and then completes a degree or certificate in that discipline. Ohlone’s rates are skewed because we participate in the South Bay Regional Public Safety Consortium, which provides ongoing training for currently-employed law enforcement officers and firefighters. These students are purposely not seeking a degree; most already have one. Yet these “non-degree-seeking” students are evaluated on the basis of completing a degree.

As an example of the impact the consortium has on this performance indicator, during the six-year period covered by this metric, Ohlone offered 591 sections enrolling 12,324 consortium students—21.3% of total enrolled students. Yet these 12,324 students accounted for only 1.5% of degrees awarded.

Despite the influence of the consortium, Hispanic students ranked 5th highest among the peer group and completed degrees or certificates at rates above both the peer and statewide averages. ESL Improvement Percentage of credit students tracked for six years through 2014-15 who started below transfer level in ESL and completed a college-level course in the same discipline.

• This is the best Scorecard we have received. The areas where we are low— CTE and ESL—are knowingly skewed by the Consortium or our own curricular choices. Where we are high, we are higher and more often high than we have ever been. • Most cohorts are students who started in 2009 and have benefitted from improvements—driven by data, strategically planned, constantly assessed-- put into place during those succeeding six years. • This was also a time of budget restraints, workload reductions, students taking college more seriously, faculty and staff working harder, together. • Bottom line, Ohlone is a peer with the premier community colleges in the state and is performing with the best of them!
