Being Healed: an Ethnography of Ayahuasca and the Self at the Temple of the Way of Light, Iquitos, Peru
Being Healed: An Ethnography of Ayahuasca and the Self at the Temple of the Way of Light, Iquitos, Peru DENA SHARROCK BSocSci (Hons) A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology and Anthropology) School of Humanities and Social Sciences The University of Newcastle December 2017 This research was supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarship STATEMENT OF ORIGINALITY I hereby certify that the work embodied in the thesis is my own work, conducted under normal supervision. The thesis contains no material which has been accepted, or is being examined, for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university or other tertiary institution and, to the best of my knowledge and belief, contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference has been made in the text. I give consent to the final version of my thesis being made available worldwide when deposited in the University’s Digital Repository, subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act 1968 and any approved embargo. Signed: Date: 23rd December 2017 i ABSTRACT This thesis explores the experiences, articulations and meaning-making of a group of people referred to as pasajeros: middle class Westerners and people living in Western-style cultures from around the globe, who travel to the Temple of the Way of Light (‘the Temple’) in the Peruvian Amazon, to explore consciousness and seek healing through ceremonies with Shipibo ‘shamans’ and the plant medicine, ayahuasca. In the thesis, I explore the health belief systems of pasajeros, examining the syncretic space of the Temple in which Western and Eastern, New Age, biomedical, and shamanic discourses meet and intertwine to create novel sets of health beliefs, practices, and perceptions of the Self. -
Constructing the Witch in Contemporary American Popular Culture
"SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES": CONSTRUCTING THE WITCH IN CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE Catherine Armetta Shufelt A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2007 Committee: Dr. Angela Nelson, Advisor Dr. Andrew M. Schocket Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Esther Clinton © 2007 Catherine A. Shufelt All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Angela Nelson, Advisor What is a Witch? Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans. -
New Age and Neopagan Religions in America
CHAPTER SEVEN The Age of Aquarius Although the idea of a New Age was popularized by Alice Bailey in the early twentieth century, the term had been around at least since the American Rev- olution before it was used self-consciously by Theosophists like her who be- lieved a “master” would come to enlighten humanity and usher us into a new age. The concept picked up relevance as the s counterculture looked to- ward the Age of Aquarius as a utopian future of peace and equality. Move- ments aimed at social and personal transformation that emerged or were given new meaning in the s continue to shape New Age and Neopagan religions. Ideas about the expected new era vary among Neopagans and New Agers, just as they ranged in the s from social revolution to com- munal escape from society. But most agree that it will include a changed dy- namic between men and women, healthy diet, holistic healing practices, and peacefulness. Along with and related to holistic healing and feminist restructuring, en- vironmentalist concerns are seen as key in bringing about the transformation of society. Many New Agers and Neopagans believe that an ecologically vi- able relationship to the natural world will characterize the future age, when humans will live more harmoniously on earth. Some also believe the earth it- self, a living being that has been ill used by humanity, will bring about cata- clysmic changes, while others expect a gradual dawning of enlightened con- sciousness among large numbers of people to usher in the New Age. Goddess religion will emerge from a “Great Purification,” claim some ob- servers, borrowing a phrase from Hopi prophecy: “Look at the freak weather phenomena all around us . -

Indigo Health Voyages Kambo After Care Kambo Aftercare Is an Essential Part of the Process While Working with These Powerful Peptides
Indigo Health Voyages Kambo After Care Kambo aftercare is an essential part of the process while working with these powerful peptides. Along the years I have picked up various healing modalities that work in a strong synergistic manner with kambo. Using some of these practices can help with aiding and adding to the longevity of benefits from the kambo treatments. Kambo treatments are best worked with 3-5 treatments over a few months span. A single maintenance treatment is very effective every 2-6 months, depending on your internal process and calling to the treatments. Each maintenance treatment holds great value, building off your previous hard work with the frog. The peptides and healing energy of the frog stay in the system for an impressive longevity. Here is a short and simple guideline for certain herbs, supplements, exercises, and a kambo diet that I highly recommend. Most of these suggestions are very affordable. Please do further research on these notes, seeing what resonates with your own current practices and nutrition. Please reach out to myself if you have any questions with this guideline and your path with kambo aftercare. - REBOUNDING EXERCISE - (Mini Trampoline or Jump Rope) Kambo works with strengthening the lymphatic system. Draining and pumping your lymph nodes is an essential exercise to practice throughout the week after Kambo for optimal health, preferably 20 min a day if possible. For further detail, research Dr. C. Samuel West, Nobel Prize nominee and expert in lymphology. - MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)- Organic sulfur to aid with detoxification. Preferably buy in bulk loose form for the best cost effective rate and take via tablespoon. -

Against the Reproduction of Continental Philosophy of Religion
ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-018-0207-4 OPEN Hexing the discipline: against the reproduction of continental philosophy of religion Marika Rose1 & Anthony Paul Smith2 ABSTRACT There has been a generalised anxiety concerning the future of continental philosophy of religion as a discipline, with a number of books, articles, conferences, and presentations taking up this theme. This anxiety exists because as a discipline continental 1234567890():,; philosophy of religion lacks a clear claim to an identity. This article analyses the anxiety concerning the future of continental philosophy of religion as an anxiety of reproduction. By locating the philosopher’s anxiety within a wider anxiety of reproduction we begin to understand this anxiety through the queer anti-social critique of Lee Edelman. This anxiety is traced through three processes of reproduction: intellectual reproduction, disciplinary reproduction, and institutional reproduction. The article goes on to sketch out a position against the reproduction of continental philosophy of religion by taking on and celebrating the discipline’s improper nature. Appealing neither to secular reason nor to established traditions, we draw on the Malleus Maleficarum (as read through queer theory and non-philosophy) to craft various models for thought. Here we find abortion prized over the future of the race, miscegenation over blood purity, and impotence and infertility over the sovereign power of the father. These models are explored both in terms of their historical context and as pro- viding a different image of the work that can be carried out in the discipline of continental philosophy of religion. The article concludes by suggesting other perverse lines of relation that may be opened up when one gives up on the reproduction of the discipline. -

Soul-Based-Learning & Universal Laws
Soul-based-learning and Universal Laws by Marja de Vries (abbreviation of the article in Anthology 2004 "Path to Peace - Soul in Education", Global Meeting in Budapest 21st-24th october, 2004, published by SEAL-Hungary Foundation and the Institute for European Connections, oct. 2004, Budapest, Hungary; p. 61-72. The whole article can also be found at www.shapersofeducation.nl being Chapter 2 of the webbook The Hidden Power of Love in Learning, edited by Charlotte Korbee.) Why soul-based-learning? Flavio Cabobianco, a boy born in the early 80s in Argentina, wrote at age 8: “New children are being born. They are different human beings, although they don’t look different. I am just one of them, one of the first ones. Humanity is changing. The connection with the spiritual world becomes more open. All children can now maintain the oneness with their essence.” He adds that the new children have different needs and that to help those children the adults themselves need to become more open and less tempted to impose their ideas and worldviews. In his book Vengo del Sol (I come from the Sun), published in 1991, he tells that he can remember all details from the time before his conception and his birth and that he came this time to Earth to be a cosmic messenger and to speak about spiritual matters. Recently, more and more people worldwide are becoming aware of the fact, that we are indeed living in a time of big changes concerning many areas of life. They realize that old worldviews rapidly are being replaced by new ones and that indeed there might be an evolution in consciousness taking place.
