Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production. -
The Chaser's Media Circus
ABC TV Media Release ABC ANNOUNCES PLAN TO REPLACE THE CHASER’S MEDIA CIRCUS WITH CAT VIDEOS ABC TV management has confirmed it hopes to replace the second series of The Chaser’s Media Circus with cat videos. “As soon as we can find enough left wing cats who instinctively hate Australia, they’ll be replaced,” said an ABC representative. Media Circus – the game show about the news game hosted by Craig Reucassel with Fake Fact Checker Chas Licciardello – returns to ABC on Thursday 10 September at 8pm. It is produced by the creative team behind The Chaser and The Checkout, including Ben Jenkins, Zoë Norton Lodge, Scott Abbot, Andrew Hansen and Julian Morrow. ABC management confirmed that for the second series the show has been moved out of the news division to allow it to be more biased and have less rigorous vetting of the studio audience. Filmed in front of a live audience each week shortly before broadcast, The Chaser’s Media Circus brings together journalists and comedians to dissect the week’s news through a time- honoured technique of media criticism: the trivia quiz. Last year’s guests included George Negus, Senator Nick Xenophon, Lenore Taylor, Chris Kenny, Ellen Fanning, Tracey Spicer, Hugh Riminton, Peter Berner, Dave Hughes and Tom Gleeson, a number of whom have not yet refused to return for Series Two. The new series will also feature Media Circus first timers including Peter Greste and John Safran. Prime Minister Abbott has confirmed he will allow government front benchers to appear on the show. But the producers are lobbying him to have this decision reversed. -
The Chaser Team
The Chaser Team Satirical Entertainment The Chaser is a satirical media empire which rivals Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp in all fields except power, influence, popularity and profitability. The Chaser is the group behind ABC TV series The Election Chaser (2001), CNNNN (2002) and CNNNN Live (2003) which together have lost a host of Australian and international TV comedy awards. However, their credibility-building run of losses ended in 2004 when CNNNN tied with Kath & Kim to win the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy. In 2005 they won the Logie for Most Outstanding TV Comedy with the hugely popular, The Chaser Decides (ABC). In 2006, the team returned to ABC TV with The Chaser’s War On Everything, which won them two AFI Awards (Best Comedy and Best Comedy Performer for Andrew Hansen), as well as several court appearances. The show returned in 2009. Extremely popular in the corporate arena, The Chaser Team offer a range of speaking and entertainment options tailored to client’s needs. As hosts and presenters, they are beautifully irrelevant with just the right amount of professionalism. As after dinner and keynote speakers, they can present custom-written satirical songs and parodies of corporate presentations including powerpoint and trivia quizzes. More about The Chaser: The Chaser was founded in 1999 as a fortnightly satirical newspaper produced out of a spare bedroom by The Chaser Team: Charles Firth, Craig Reucassel, Julian Morrow, Dominic Knight, Andrew Hansen, Chas Licciardello and Chris Taylor. Since those humble beginnings, the Chaser team has lost its humility and has produced ClassicTM comedy in all media, including print, online, radio, television and Christmas crackers. -

Chasing reporters: Infotainment, intertextuality and media satire. © Copyright 2009 Stephen Harrington Chasing Reporters: Infotainment, Intertextuality and Media Satire STEPHEN HARRINGTON Queensland University of Technology, Australia ABSTRACT The Chaser’s War on Everything was a night time entertainment program which screened on Australia’s public broadcaster, the ABC in 2006 and 2007. This enormously successful comedy show managed to generate a lot of controversy in its short lifespan (see, for example, Dennehy, 2007; Dubecki, 2007; McLean, 2007; Wright, 2007), but also drew much praise for its satirising of, and commentary on, topical issues. Through interviews with the program’s producers, qualitative audience research and textual analysis, this paper will focus on this show’s media satire, and the segment ‘What Have We Learned From Current Affairs This Week?’ in particular. Viewed as a form of ‘Critical Intertextuality’ (Gray, 2006), this segment (which offered a humorous critique of the ways in which news and current affairs are presented elsewhere on television) may equip citizens with a better understanding of the new genre’s production methods, thus producing a higher level of public media literacy. This paper argues that through its media satire, The Chaser acts not as a traditional news program would in informing the public with new information, but as a text which can inform and shape our understanding of news that already exists within the public sphere. Humorous analyses and critiques of the media (like those analysed in this paper), are in fact very important forms of infotainment, because they can provide “other, ‘improper,’ and yet more media literate and savvy interpretations” (Gray, 2006, p. -

What about me? Identity, subjectivity and reality TV participation Winnie Salamon Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2010 School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne 2 Abstract This thesis examines first person accounts of former reality television participants who have appeared on Australian versions of Big Brother , Australian Idol and The Biggest Loser . While scholars have researched audience responses to a wide range of reality shows, little research has been conducted on the participants themselves. Abstract This thesis examines the contemporary interplay between satire and politics, focusing on texts that envisage and engage with politics in unconventional and often mischievous ways. There is a long tradition of scholarship concerned with issues such as satire’s ability to promote subversion, awareness, apathy or even cynicism; the potential, or lack thereof, of satire to influence any change in political or journalistic discourse; and the relationship between satire and “truth,” particularly in satire’s capacity to “speak truth to power.” My research expands on this tradition, asking, how does televisual and online political satire contribute to shifting political discourses? Focusing primarily on the under-researched relationship between satire and Australian politics, this question is considered through textual and discursive analysis. Firstly, I examine the difference between cynicism and its ancient counterpart kynicism in order to illustrate how different types of satire approach the idea of truth and truth-telling. I then explore how the larrikin, the carnivalesque and a cultural “distaste for taste” play an important role in the way satirists are given legitimacy to speak on political issues in Australia. -

In the face of corporate conglomeration and economic rationalism, journalism has largely abandoned what McNair (2006: 64) has termed the “communicative arms race” between it and the three other ‘estates’ which it supervises, instead favouring to continually lower the costs of production with the intent of maximising (continually diminishing) profits. While residual forms have too often failed the public during, for example, what many have seen as (in the USA most acutely) a post-9/11 crisis of professional credibility (see Zelizer & Allan, 2002: 69- 116; McChesney, 2003; Miller, 2007: 79-111), there are many other emergent forms of journalism that simultaneously succeeded during this period, and which continue to flourish. This paper therefore argues primarily that journalism should no longer be considered as a singular profession, but as a series of different, overlapping, sometimes antagonistic, journalisms. Drawing upon recently completed research into media audiences, this paper provides qualitative evidence that the many unorthodox approaches to news programs now available to media consumers are valuable contributions to public knowledge. This shift from homogeneity to heterogeneity in the news media also presents a significant challenge to those who wish to retain control over what the public sees and understands about the political world, and, as such, journalism as a true, broadly-defined ‘whole’ should not – or at least not yet – be considered as in ‘crisis’.
