REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. This book’s argument Mark Altaweel is framed within a larger theoretical framework termed as ‘universalism’, a theory that explains WORLD A many of the social transformations that happened to societies in the Near East, starting from Andrea Squitieri the Neo-Assyrian period and continuing for centuries. The Administration of Sasanian Egypt: New Masters and Byzantine Continuity Patrick Sänger T IS WELL KNOWN that Egypt was under the rule of the Sasanians between 619 and 629 A.D. Historical research into this short period of Egyptian history concentrates I 1 mainly on the chronology of the Persian invasion. The focus on this important aspect does not surprise one at all. Even though Egypt can offer abundant material for administrative and socio-historical studies, we encounter specific problems— as far as ancient history is concerned—when dealing with the era of the Sasanians. The problems arise because Greek docu- ments from the Sasanian period are difficult to identify. The documents in question lack, as do those from the Arabic period, essential dating criteria, such as the regnal year of the Byzantine emperor. The study of Sasanian Egypt is therefore left to a small number of scholars, who are either versed in de- ciphering Pahlavi documents or attempt to assess Greek (and also Coptic) documentary evidence with reference to onomas- tics and/or prosopography.2 1 See e.g. A. Introduction
Introduction The City of a Thousand Minarets began as a source document I wrote for a video game company that was dabbling with the idea of a MMORPG set in a 1930s Pulp setting. The first environment they were going to roll out was their Pulp Cairo setting. So I set about collecting as much "stranger than fiction" details about the city, trying to demonstrate that historical Cairo was more exotic and beautiful than any Arabian Nights fantasy. Part of the project was to include a good deal of information about how Cairo has been portrayed in media so that level designers could weave their way between the expected Cairo of "orientalist" fantasy, and the surprising Cairo of real history. And of course, at the time I was already a huge Hollow Earth Expedition fan. Ever since Raiders of the Lost Ark came out, I had been looking for a role-playing game to recreate the heroic action of the Pulp Genre and always being disappointed. It wasn't until I read the Ubiquity System that I found the mechanics I'd always been looking for. Streamlined. Fast. Fun. The perfect system for punching Nazis off of zeppelins into dinosaurs! That was over a decade ago. The computer game company moved on to other projects and my document sat gathering dust until I picked up Black Campbell Entertainment's The Queen of the Orient and The Sublime Port. Then I realized that I had something to offer my fellow fans of Hollow Earth Expedition. I hope you all fall in love with Cairo as much as I have.

This thesis examines the institution of Queen Regency in the Seleucid Dynasty, the power and duties held by the Queen Regent, and the relationship between the Queen and her son—the royal heir. I BETWEEN 1935 AND 1947, EXCAVATIONS led by the Metro- politan Museum of Art at Nishapur, one of the four great medieval cities of the eastern province of Khurasan, brought to light some of the earliest extant wall paintings of the Islamic period from Iran. These included a remarkable series of painted plaster dadoes found in a rectangular room measuring almost thirty square meters within a large complex identified by the excavators as an administrative or palatial structure, located in a western sub- urb of Nishapur known as Tepe Madrasa.1 The iconography of the paintings, which can be dated to the ninth or tenth centuries, is unique; although some antecedent traditions can be identified, the bizarre congeries of leaves, limbs, and scales evoked in the medium of paint at Nishapur is without any immedi- ate parallel in Islamic art (fig. 1). A Small Step for a Man, a Giant Leap for a People —The Coptic Alphabets Victoria Fendel Abstract. The paper looks at the beginnings of the Coptic alphabet in first- and second-century Egypt from different angles. It reviews and builds on the sometimes-contradictory research from the social perspective while also consid- ering practical challenges for the ancient writers. It explores the relevance of cognitive factors regarding the transition to the first alphabetic writing system for the Egyptian language. In the later Roman period (1st / 2nd c. AD), new writing systems to notate the Egyptian language emerged, which were to suit the needs of the evolved Egyptian language. The Greek alphabet and the Demotic script served as their models and resources. The impetus for this change must be sought in the social setting. The paper pulls together socio- linguistic and empirical past research and adds the cognitive-linguistic angle. This contribution is not a complete account of the argument, but a deeper dive into three issues that sharpen aspects of the argument made and the hypothesis put forward. Egyptian could be written with three writing systems for most of its history. These were a cursive for day-to-day writing, a script primarily used in religious contexts, and a script used for monumental inscrip- tions (Houston, Baines, and Cooper, 2003, pp. 440–442). The day-to- day writing system has traditionally lent its name to the stage of Egypt- ian since Ptolemaic times. Thus, we speak of Demotic in the Ptolemaic and early Roman periods and of Coptic in the later Roman and early Byzantine periods.

The history of Egypt has been long and wealthy, due to the flow of the Nile River with its fertile banks and delta, as well as the accomplishments of Egypt's native inhabitants and outside influence. Much of Egypt's ancient history was a mystery until the secrets of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs were deciphered with the discovery and help of the Rosetta Stone. Among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is the Great Pyramid of Giza. The Library of Alexandria was the only one of its kind for centuries. Human settlement in Egypt dates back to at least 40,000 BC with Aterian tool manufacturing.[citation needed] Ancient Egyptian civilization coalesced around 3150 BC with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh of the First Dynasty, Narmer. Predominately native Egyptian rule lasted until the conquest by the Achaemenid Empire in the sixth century BC. In 332 BC, Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great conquered Egypt as he toppled the Achaemenids and established the Hellenistic Ptolemaic Kingdom, whose first ruler was one of Alexander's former generals, Ptolemy I Soter. The Ptolemies had to fight native rebellions and were involved in foreign and civil wars that led to the decline of the kingdom and its final annexation by Rome. The death of Cleopatra ended the nominal independence of Egypt resulting in Egypt becoming one of the provinces of the Roman Empire.[citation needed] Roman rule in Egypt (including Byzantine) lasted from 30 BC to 641 AD, with a brief interlude of control by the Sasanian Empire between 619–629, known as Sasanian Egypt.[1] After the Muslim conquest of Egypt, parts of Egypt became provinces of successive Caliphates and other Muslim dynasties: Rashidun Caliphate (632-661), Umayyad Caliphate (661–750), Abbasid Caliphate (750–909), Fatimid Caliphate (909–1171), Ayyubid Sultanate (1171–1260), and the Mamluk Sultanate (1250–1517).
