The object of this research is the statistical unit of Wrocław defined by the boundaries of the former district − Wrocław-Śródmieście. The research covers the period (as the availability of statistical data) for the years 2009-2015. The author used a descriptive method, simple statistical methods, an analysis of literature and source documents, a deductive method and an empirical inference. Keywords: Wrocław-Śródmieście, local development, economic activity. Streszczenie: Celem artykułu jest określenie specyfiki i znaczenia obszaru Wrocław-Śródmieście (ważnej części Wrocławia, dawnej dzielnicy) w gospodarce Wrocławia oraz perspektyw jego rozwoju, z uwzględnieniem silnych i słabych stron.     St. John’s Cathedral Wrocław The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Wrocław, (Polish: Archikatedra św. Jana Chrzciciela, German: Breslauer Dom, Kathedrale St. Johannes des Täufers), is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wrocław and a landmark of the city of Wrocław in Poland. The cathedral, located in the Ostrów Tumski district, is a Gothic church with Neo-Gothic additions. The current standing cathedral is the fourth church to have been built on the site. The cathedral was almost entirely destroyed (about 70% of the construction) during the Siege of Breslau and heavy bombing by the Red Army in the last days of World War II. Parts of the interior fittings were saved and are now on display at the National Museum in Warsaw. The initial reconstruction of the church lasted until 1951, when it was reconsecrated by Archbishop Stefan Wyszyński. In the following years, additional aspects were rebuilt and renovated. The original, conical shape of the towers was restored only in 1991. Wroclaw Town Hall The Old Town Hall (Polish: Stary Ratusz) of Wroclaw stands at the center of the city’s Market Square (rynek). Wroclaw is the largest city in western Poland and isthe site of many beautiful buildings. The Old Town Hall's long history reflects the developments that have taken place in the city over time since its initial construction. The town hall serves the city of Wroclaw and is used for civic and cultural events such as concerts held in its Great Hall. In addition to a concert hall, it houses a museum and a basement restaurant.

More specifically, this article is a proposal of a broader study on cultural landscape and places of memory than that which is dominant in the sociological literature. In particular, I examine the relationship between the inhabitants of the Polish “Western Lands” and the material German heritage of the cities in which they happen to live. I mainly focus on the relation between socially constructed memory and greenery—a “negligible” part of the space of human life. As I demonstrate in the article, the “green” narrations about Wrocław created after World War II are lasting and are still present in the stories of city’s inhabitants today. Key words: Polish Western Lands, social memory, cultural heritage, greenery, Wrocław The cultural landscape as a lived landscape: A sociological perspective The starting point of my reflections is the concept of cultural landscape, which I under- stand as „a record of history in a specific space whose shape and identity are com- posed of both primary (coming from nature) and secondary (resulting from human activity) factors” (Kornecki 1991, 19). This definition, however, requires a clarification in the sociological perspective I adopt. The postulated „record of history in a specific space” is carried out by researchers most often in the macrosocial context—as in the definition of the cultural landscape proposed by Beata Frydryczak: Kamilla Biskupska the cultural landscape is the result of human work and activity and of historical time.

The new multifamily housing development of years 2000-2014 of Psie Pole as a housing development in Wroclaw, closes the gap between the historic district residential buildings in the old Psie Pole and the buildings of large slabs of the 70s of the twentieth century. The contemporary residential development uses the existing social infrastructure centre of the old Psie Pole district, and also the social infrastructure of the housing development of 70s of the twentieth century. The authors analyze, in the first part, the spatial development of these areas on the basis of historical materials. In the following, based on an analysis of urban structure created in the last 15 years of development, analyze existing conditions, context and value (in terms of urban planning - the wealth of social infrastructure), the contemporary housing development of Psie Pole.     Dear Students, If you are holding this book in your hand you are most probably considering coming to Wrocław to study. And we know you won’t regret it if you do make the choice to come. The city is one of the most interesting places in Poland with great culture, rich history, a good university and – last but not least –a fantas- tic student atmosphere. Keep your eyes wide open and be ready for surprises. The country and the city have changed a lot in recent years, but you will still feel here like you are riding a rollercoaster between the modern world, uniting Europe, and an old fashioned eastern province. In this guidebook we are going to prepare you for this experience. The Jungle Book started in 2003. The idea is based on the assumption that foreign students planning to go to Wroclaw need a practical, fresh, sometimes subjective guidebook to help them to enjoy their stay from the very begin- ning. That’s why it was developed with great backing from foreign students, whose remarks and commentaries about living in Wrocław, both enthusiastic and critical, have been integrated into the text. The current third edition of the Jungle Book is divided into three parts. At the beginning you will find some general information about the history and politics of Poland and a survival kit concerning living in the country generally, without any regional, specifically Wroclaw’s, context. In the following chapter we give you a set of information about the University of Wrocław and student issues. The last section, and the longest one, is an extensive practical guide- book for Wroclaw’s newcomer.
