Equivelar octahedron of genus 3 in 3-space Ruslan Mizhaev ([email protected]) Apr. 2020 ABSTRACT . Building up a toroidal polyhedron of genus 3, consisting of 8 nine-sided faces, is given. From the point of view of topology, a polyhedron can be considered as an embedding of a cubic graph with 24 vertices and 36 edges in a surface of genus 3. This polyhedron is a contender for the maximal genus among octahedrons in 3-space. 1. Introduction This solution can be attributed to the problem of determining the maximal genus of polyhedra with the number of faces - . As is known, at least 7 faces are required for a polyhedron of genus = 1 . For cases ≥ 8 , there are currently few examples. If all faces of the toroidal polyhedron are – gons and all vertices are q-valence ( ≥ 3), such polyhedral are called either locally regular or simply equivelar [1]. The characteristics of polyhedra are abbreviated as , ; [1]. 2. Polyhedron {9, 3; 3} V1. The paper considers building up a polyhedron 9, 3; 3 in 3-space. The faces of a polyhedron are non- convex flat 9-gons without self-intersections. The polyhedron is symmetric when rotated through 1804 around the axis (Fig. 3). One of the features of this polyhedron is that any face has two pairs with which it borders two edges. The polyhedron also has a ratio of angles and faces - = − 1. To describe polyhedra with similar characteristics ( = − 1) we use the Euler formula − + = = 2 − 2, where is the Euler characteristic. Since = 3, the equality 3 = 2 holds true. -

Uniform Boundedness Principle for Unbounded Operators
UNIFORM BOUNDEDNESS PRINCIPLE FOR UNBOUNDED OPERATORS C. GANESA MOORTHY and CT. RAMASAMY Abstract. A uniform boundedness principle for unbounded operators is derived. A particular case is: Suppose fTigi2I is a family of linear mappings of a Banach space X into a normed space Y such that fTix : i 2 Ig is bounded for each x 2 X; then there exists a dense subset A of the open unit ball in X such that fTix : i 2 I; x 2 Ag is bounded. A closed graph theorem and a bounded inverse theorem are obtained for families of linear mappings as consequences of this principle. Some applications of this principle are also obtained. 1. Introduction There are many forms for uniform boundedness principle. There is no known evidence for this principle for unbounded operators which generalizes classical uniform boundedness principle for bounded operators. The second section presents a uniform boundedness principle for unbounded operators. An application to derive Hellinger-Toeplitz theorem is also obtained in this section. Rev. Lett. 111, 015501 (2013)], we inves- tigate here the thermodynamic phase behavior of a family of truncated hard cubes, for which the shape evolves smoothly from a cube via a cuboctahedron to an octahedron. We used Monte Carlo simulations and free-energy calculations to establish the full phase diagram. This phase diagram exhibits a remarkable richness in crystal and mesophase structures, depending sensitively on the precise particle shape. In addition, we examined in detail the nature of the plastic crystal (rotator) phases that appear for intermediate densities and levels of truncation. Our results allow us to probe the relation between phase behavior and building-block shape and to further the understanding of rotator phases. Furthermore, the phase diagram presented here should prove instrumental for guiding future experimental studies on similarly shaped nanoparticles and the creation of new materials. Abstract In this paper, we present a new class of semi-regular polyhedra. All the faces of these polyhedra are bounded by smooth (quadratic B-spline) curves and the face boundaries are C1 discontinues every- where. These semi-regular polyhedral shapes are limit surfaces of a simple vertex truncation subdivision scheme. We obtain an approximation of these smooth fractal polyhedra by iteratively applying a new vertex truncation scheme to an initial manifold mesh. Our vertex truncation scheme is based on Chaikin’s construction. If the initial manifold mesh is a polyhedra only with planar faces and 3-valence vertices, in each iteration we construct polyhedral meshes in which all faces are planar and every vertex is 3-valence, 1 Introduction One of the most exciting aspects of shape modeling and sculpting is the development of new algorithms and methods to create unusual, interesting and aesthetically pleasing shapes. Recent advances in computer graphics, shape modeling and mathematics help the imagination of contemporary mathematicians, artists and architects to design new and unusual 3D forms [11]. In this paper, we present such a unusual class of semi-regular polyhedra that are contradictorily interesting, i.e. they are smooth but yet C1 discontinuous. To create these shapes we apply a polyhedral truncation algorithm based on Chaikin’s scheme to any initial manifold mesh. Figure 1 shows two shapes that are created by using our approach. -

Introduction Much recent work aimed at providing a formal ontology for the common-sense world has emphasized the need for a mereological account to be supplemented with topological concepts and principles. There are at least two reasons under- lying this view. The first is truly metaphysical and relates to the task of charac- terizing individual integrity or organic unity: since the notion of connectedness runs afoul of plain mereology, a theory of parts and wholes really needs to in- corporate a topological machinery of some sort. The second reason has been stressed mainly in connection with applications to certain areas of artificial in- telligence, most notably naive physics and qualitative reasoning about space and time: here mereology proves useful to account for certain basic relation- ships among things or events; but one needs topology to account for the fact that, say, two events can be continuous with each other, or that something can be inside, outside, abutting, or surrounding something else. These motivations (at times combined with others, e.g., semantic transpar- ency or computational efficiency) have led to the development of theories in which both mereological and topological notions play a pivotal role. How ex- actly these notions are related, however, and how the underlying principles should interact with one another, is still a rather unexplored issue. -

Jim Lewis, Advisor July 2008 2 Archimedean Solids A polygon is a simple, closed, planar figure with sides formed by joining line segments, where each line segment intersects exactly two others. If all of the sides have the same length and all of the angles are congruent, the polygon is called regular. The sum of the angles of a regular polygon with n sides, where n is 3 or more, is 180° x (n – 2) degrees. If a regular polygon were connected with other regular polygons in three dimensional space, a polyhedron could be created. In geometry, a polyhedron is a three- dimensional solid which consists of a collection of polygons joined at their edges. The word polyhedron is derived from the Greek word poly (many) and the Indo-European term hedron (seat). -

Alexandra BAC, Marc DANIEL, Jean-Louis MALTRET* 3D MODELLING AND SEGMENTATION WITH DISCRETE CURVATURES Recent concepts of discrete curvatures are very important for Medical and Computer Aided Geometric Design applications. A first reason is the opportunity to handle a discretisation of a continuous object, with a free choice of the discretisation. A second and most important reason is the possibility to define second-order estimators for discrete objects in order to estimate local shapes and manipulate discrete objects. There is an increasing need to handle polyhedral objects and clouds of points for which only a discrete approach makes sense. These sets of points, once structured (in general meshed with simplexes for surfaces or volumes), can be analysed using these second-order estimators. After a general presentation of the problem, a first approach based on angular defect, is studied. Then, a local approximation approach (mostly by quadrics) is presented. Different possible applications of these techniques are suggested, including the analysis of 2D or 3D images, decimation, segmentation... We finally emphasise different artefacts encountered in the discrete case. 1. INTRODUCTION This paper offers a review of work on discrete curvatures for Computer Aided Geometric Design applications and a discussion about some ideas for further studies. We consider the discrete curvatures computed on a set of points and their relevance to continuous curvatures when the density of the points increases. First of all, it is interesting to recall that curvatures are fundamental tools for studying curves and surfaces. -

We compute the dimensions of a regular tetragonal pyramid, which allows a cut by a plane along a regular pentagon. In addition, we relate this construction to a simple construction of the icosahedron and make a conjecture on the impossibility to generalize such sections of regular pyramids. 1. Pentagonal sections The present discussion could be entitled Organizing calculations with Menelaos, and originates from a problem from the book of Sharygin [2, p. 147], in which it is required to construct a pentagonal section of a regular pyramid with quadrangular F J I D T L C K H E M a x A G B U V Figure 1. The basis of the pyramid is a square of side-length a and the pyramid is assumed to be regular, i.e. its apex F is located on the orthogonal at the center E of the square at a distance h = |EF| from it (See Figure 1). The exercise asks for the determination of the height h if we know that there is a section GHIJK of the pyramid by a plane which is a regular pentagon. The section is tacitly assumed to be symmetric with respect to the diagonal symmetry plane AF C of the pyramid and defined by a plane through the three points K, G, I. The first two, K and G, lying symmetric with respect to the diagonal AC of the square. -

Branes and Polytopes Luca Romano email address: [email protected] ABSTRACT We investigate the hierarchies of half-supersymmetric branes in maximal supergravity theories. By studying the action of the Weyl group of the U-duality group of maximal supergravities we discover a set of universal algebraic rules describing the number of independent 1/2-BPS p-branes, rank by rank, in any dimension. We show that these relations describe the symmetries of certain families of uniform polytopes. This induces a correspondence between half-supersymmetric branes and vertices of opportune uniform polytopes. We show that half-supersymmetric 0-, 1- and 2-branes are in correspondence with the vertices of the k21, 2k1 and 1k2 families of uniform polytopes, respectively, while 3-branes correspond to the vertices of the rectified version of the 2k1 family. For 4-branes and higher rank solutions we find a general behavior. The interpretation of half- supersymmetric solutions as vertices of uniform polytopes reveals some intriguing aspects. One of the most important class of branes consists in Dirichlet branes, or D-branes. D-branes appear in string theory as boundary terms for open strings with mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions and, due to their tension, scaling with a negative power of the string cou- pling constant, they are non-perturbative objects [2].
