The aim of the cruise was the understanding of the stratigraphic-structural setting of the Pozzuoli Bay area, with specific reference to the major offshore volcanic features, such as Nisida Bank, Pentapalummo Bank, M.Dolce-Pampano Bank and Miseno Bank and others. The Gulf of Pozzuoli is placed in the Volcanic district of Campi Flegrei, an area of active volcanism located at North West of Naples city, along the Tyrrhenian margin, in an extensional collapsed area called Campanian Plain, filled by siliciclastic, epiclastic and volcaniclastic sediments, deposited during Late Pliocene and Quaternary. Several studies present in literature suggest a relation between volcanic system of Campi Flegrei and faults system; in particular,

The spot, a low, damp, grassy field, exposed to the floods of the river Spinon, took the name of “Comitium” from the verb coire, to assemble. It is possible that, in consequence of the alliance, a road connecting the Sabine and the Roman settlements was made across these swamps; it became afterwards the Sacra Via…. 6 The Roman Forum • “…Tullus Hostilius, the third king, built a stone inclosure on the Comitium, for the meeting of the Senators, named from him Curia Hostilia; then came the state prison built by Ancus Marcius in one of the quarries (the Tullianum). The Tarquin [kings] drained the land, gave the Forum a regular (trapezoidal) shape, divided the space around its borders into building- lots, and sold them to private speculators for shops and houses, the fronts of which were to be lined with porticoes.” --Rodolfo Lanciani, The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome, 1897, p.

  • The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome
CHARM 2015 Proceedings Marketing an Urban Identity: The Shops and Shopkeepers of Ancient Rome 135 Rhodora G. Vennarucci Lecturer of Classics, Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, University of Arkansas, U.S.A. Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of fixed-point retailing in the city of ancient Rome between the 2nd c BCE and the 2nd/3rd c CE. Changes in the socio-economic environment during the 2nd c BCE caused the structure of Rome’s urban retail system to shift from one chiefly reliant on temporary markets and fairs to one typified by permanent shops. As shops came to dominate the architectural experience of Rome’s streetscapes, shopkeepers took advantage of the increased visibility by focusing their marketing strategies on their shop designs. Through this process, the shopkeeper and his shop actively contributed to urban placemaking and the distribution of an urban identity at Rome. Design/methodology/approach – This paper employs an interdisciplinary approach in its analysis, combining textual, archaeological, and art historical materials with comparative history and modern marketing theory. Research limitation/implications – Retailing in ancient Rome remains a neglected area of study on account of the traditional view among economic historians that the retail trades of pre-industrial societies were primitive and unsophisticated. This paper challenges traditional models of marketing history by establishing the shop as both the dominant method of urban distribution and the chief means for advertising at Rome. Keywords – Ancient Rome, Ostia, Shop Design, Advertising, Retail Change, Urban Identity Paper Type – Research Paper Introduction The permanent Roman shop was a locus for both commercial and social exchanges, and the shopkeeper acted as the mediator of these exchanges.

  • Nel Foro Volano Le Api D'oro
2021 Nel foro volano le api d’oro AN INSTALLATION BY RAFFAELE CURI In the Torre dei Santi Luca e Martina at the Roman Forum via della Curia 4 The UN General Assembly decided to declare 20 May as World Bee Day, the aim being to help preserve the existence of an insect of vital importance for life on earth. To mark this day, the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti is presenting its new artistic experiment in the Torre dei Santi Luca e Martina in the Roman Forum: the installation Nel Foro volano le api d’oro – Teocrito [In the Forum Fly Golden Bees – Theocritus] by the artist Raffaele Curi, on view from 20 May to 21 June 2021. Admission free. Two visitors may enter at a time. 2 Rome 20 may - 21 june 2021 3 Bees are at the centre of the vision of Raffaele Curi, who illuminates with golden reflections one of the most beautiful places in the world – the heart of the Caput Mundi, among ancient remains testifying to the power of ancient Rome – in a dialogue with the Baroque of Pietro da Cortona, the architect who designed the church of Santi Luca e Martina in front of the Mamertine Prison where Saint Peter was once imprisoned. 4 A sense of sacredness pervades the entire installation, which collates photographs and images borrowed from art history, with a synchronic gaze so bold as to bring together different cultures and epochs and to erase any temporal distance. Visitors find themselves walking on a carpet of words moved by the breeze, while the air is filled with the song of bees, with their busy conversations, incomprehensible to us and yet pervaded by a hypnotic and profound musicality.
