The World is a Festival of Dance , Arthur van Schendel)* Ever since my Schubert Iconography was published I continued to find more Schubert images heretofore unknown to me 1. After the article’s publication I donated all my Schubert iconography research files to the City University of New York Research Center for Music Iconography, and sent newly discovered images to the RCMI to add to the research inventory. From time to time I discover interesting Schubert images, often not compelling for the quality of their art but interesting regarding the curious historical circumstances surrounding the artist who created the image. I have long been an admirer of Vermeer, and in January 2009 I bought Benjamin Binstock’s Vermeer’s Family Secrets .2 I began to read the author’s discussion of the clever and talented Dutch art forger Han (Henricus Antonius) van Meegeren (1889-1947), best known for his Vermeer forgeries. Like most people interested in art I had heard about this duplicitous artist and his incredible success at fooling the Vermeer experts, but I had never seen any examples of Van Meegeren’s own original artwork signed with his own name.

Als keuzeonderdeel van mijn studie Civiele Techniek aan de Universiteit Twente volgde ik tien weken lang een aantal vakken van de opleiding Technische Planologie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Als onderdeel van het vak Regionale Strategieën ging ik driemaal op excursie naar de stad Kampen, om zo ervaring in het veld op te doen, aldus mijn docent. Tijdens deze drie bezoeken hoorde ik van de ambitie van de stad en gemeente om de Burgel, de eerste stadsgracht van Kampen, bevaarbaar te krijgen. Om zo de watertoerist verder de stad in te krijgen en een levendige binnenstad te creëren. Ik vond dat een geweldig plan, maar vroeg me toch af waarom deze droom nog geen werkelijkheid was. Met deze vraag stapte ik naar mijn docent, die mij vertelde dat het een enorm project was, met torenhoge kosten, dit door het plan Verweij, wat tegelijkertijd met de bevaarbaarheid een parkeergarage onder de gracht wilde aanleggen.

The OWHC interconnects more than 300 cities that incorporate sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Combined, these cities have a total population of over 164 million people. They are represented in the Organization by their mayor, with the active participation of elected municipal officials and heritage managers. The primary objectives of the Organization are to facilitate the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, to encourage cooperation and the exchange of information and expertise on matters of conservation and management, as well as to develop a sense of solidarity among its member cities. To this end, the OWHC organizes World Congresses, conferences, seminars and workshops dealing with the challenges faced in the area of management and it provides strategies for the preservation and development of historic cities. Unfortunately you cannot visit Parklaan Kenaupark Kruisweg this court, but you do have a beautiful view of the garden. Parklaan Parklaan Nieuwe Gracht Parklaan In 1489, 13 ‘rooms with erfs’ were bequeathed to the men of Elisabeth’s Hooimarkt Jansweg Gasthuis, a hospital. It was stipulated that only priests or the impoverished Kinderhuissingel Nieuwe Gracht were permitted to live here. The court originally consisted of a square of Nieuwe Gracht Nassaustraat houses, however, as the Barrevoetesteeg had to be widened, one row Magdalenastraat was demolished so that you are now able to view this almshouse cour t Kruisstraat Nassaulaan Zijlweg Kinderhuisvest through a gate. The house diagonally across from the entrance to the right Ursulastraat is the regents’ room. The room was never used because the regents had 2 Jansstraat 3 their own quarters in the Elisabeth’s Gasthuis. With the almshouses behind Krocht 1 Zijlstraat 4 you, turn left, back towards the Botermarkt. Witte Herenstraat Walk through the court along the garden to the neighbouring almshouse court. Zijlsingel Walk along V&D towards the traffic lights on the Grote Houtstraat. The newest in Haarlem, the Johannes Enschedé almshouses (14) were Zijlstraat Korte Smedestraat Begijnestraat Koudenhorn Cross over and turn right into the Gedempte Oude Gracht. A linguistic history of Holland and Belgium VII Preface There has long been a need for a book in English about the Dutch language that presents important, interesting information in a form accessible even to those who know no Dutch and have no immediate intention of learning it. The need for such a book became all the more obvious to me, when, once employed in a position that entailed the dissemination of Dutch language and culture in an Anglo-Saxon society, I was continually amazed by the ignorance that prevails with regard to the Dutch language, even among colleagues involved in the teaching of other European languages. How often does one hear that Dutch is a dialect of German, or that Flemish and Dutch are closely related (but presumably separate) languages? To my knowledge there has never been a book in English that sets out to clarify such matters and to present other relevant issues to the general and studying public.1. Holland's contributions to European and world history, to art, to shipbuilding, hydraulic engineering, bulb growing and cheese manufacture for example, are all aspects of Dutch culture which have attracted the interest of other nations, and consequently there are numerous books in English and other languages on these subjects. But the language of the people that achieved so much in all those fields has been almost completely neglected by other nations, and to a degree even by the Dutch themselves who have long been admired for their polyglot talents but whose lack of interest in their own language seems never to have disturbed them.
