V&A acquires the Glastonbury Festival Archive The V&A is delighted to announce a collaboration with Glastonbury Festival to create an archive reflecting more than 40 years of diverse and creative performance. Glastonbury Festival is the longest-running popular music and performing arts festival in the world. Set up in 1970 by Michael Eavis on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset – the Eavis’s family farm for four generations - the Festival is now attended by around 175,000 people annually. It has a long and unique history of hosting music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts and collaborating with artists, set designers and craftspeople. Many distinguished names have performed at the summer festival over the last four decades including Beyoncé, Bjork, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Coldplay, The Cure, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, New Order, Oasis, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Toots and the Maytals, Velvet Underground and Amy Winehouse. This eclectic archive includes a range of material, from programmes and posters from every festival since 1970, designs for the Festival identity, interviews, unseen film and photographs, correspondence, t-shirts, tickets and other memorabilia. Personal accounts and documents trace the origins of the Festival and festival maps reveal how it has grown and developed within the landscape. Press cuttings document the relationship of the Festival with the local community and stories that captured the nation. The working processes of the Festival will be captured in the archive with original backstage passes, photographs and performers’ set-lists. The archive also includes photographs that reveal the evolution of the legendary Pyramid stage since its creation in 1971 to a permanent stage – also briefly used as a cattle shed in 1981.

Viewpoint Mystic mountain © Mendip Hills AONB Time: 15 mins Region: South West England Landscape: rural Location: Ebbor Gorge, Somerset, BA5 3BA Grid reference: ST 52649 48742 Getting there: Park at Deer Leap car park and picnic area (on the road between Wookey Hole and Priddy) Keep an eye out for: Buzzards and other birds of prey soaring on the thermals below From this stunning vantage point we have sweeping views south across the flat land of the Somerset Levels. On a clear day, looking east you can see the dark line of hills marking out Exmoor National Park and if you look in a west south-west direction you can even spot the Bristol Channel glistening in the distance. As our eyes pan across the view they rest on a perfectly rounded knoll with a short tower on top. This is Glastonbury Tor. Claimed as the site of the legendary Vale of Avalon and the final resting place of King Arthur, the tor rises up above the flat land surrounding it and is visible for miles around. Why does the mystical Glastonbury Tor rise up out of the surrounding lowlands? First of all look straight ahead and in the middle distance you’ll see three hills which punctuate the flat landscape. From left to right they are Hay Hill, Ben Knowle Hill and Yarley Hill, part of a low ridge just south of the River Axe. Surrounding these hills the Somerset Levels are an area of low-lying farmland. The lowest point is just 0.2 metres above sea level.

Rivers called Avon Avon is a proper name in English but an ordinary word afon ‘river’ in Welsh. Therefore many people argue that speakers of Germanic languages (English, Scots, Norse, etc) heard a word like afon used by speakers of Celtic languages (Welsh, Gaelic, Cornish, etc) and then turned it into a proper name. This tends to get given a nationalist slant – who are the true inheritors of Iron-Age Britain? Rather silly, not just because semantic flow might have gone the other way, turning a proper name into a general word, but because it diverts attention from the really interesting part. Avon may offer a peek into the distant past, long before the Romans, perhaps even before the Bronze Age. We need to ask how and when the word avon was created. That means investigating where all rivers with names like Avon do (or did) occur and what distinctive features those rivers have in common. But first a bit of linguistics. The Indo-European root *ap- ‘water’ has descendants almost everywhere one looks. Best known are the Celtic words for ‘river’: Welsh afon, Irish ab (hence various forms such as abhann and habhana related to Scottish Gaelic abhainn and abhuinn), and Cornish or Breton forms such as aven and avon. Other words for river include Sanskrit avani, Old Prussian ape, Hittite hapa, and the ending –appe on Dutch place names. Further afield lie Persian Punjab ‘five waters’, Hindi Doab ‘two waters’, the Abana river of ancient Damascus, Sumerian abzu ‘deep water’, and ancient Greek Epirus possibly from PIE *apero- ‘shore, bank’.
