V&A acquires the Glastonbury Festival Archive The V&A is delighted to announce a collaboration with Glastonbury Festival to create an archive reflecting more than 40 years of diverse and creative performance. Glastonbury Festival is the longest-running popular music and performing arts festival in the world. Set up in 1970 by Michael Eavis on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset – the Eavis’s family farm for four generations - the Festival is now attended by around 175,000 people annually. It has a long and unique history of hosting music, dance, comedy, theatre, circus, cabaret and other arts and collaborating with artists, set designers and craftspeople. Many distinguished names have performed at the summer festival over the last four decades including Beyoncé, Bjork, Blondie, Marc Bolan, Coldplay, The Cure, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney, Van Morrison, New Order, Oasis, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones, Toots and the Maytals, Velvet Underground and Amy Winehouse. This eclectic archive includes a range of material, from programmes and posters from every festival since 1970, designs for the Festival identity, interviews, unseen film and photographs, correspondence, t-shirts, tickets and other memorabilia. Personal accounts and documents trace the origins of the Festival and festival maps reveal how it has grown and developed within the landscape. Press cuttings document the relationship of the Festival with the local community and stories that captured the nation. The working processes of the Festival will be captured in the archive with original backstage passes, photographs and performers’ set-lists. The archive also includes photographs that reveal the evolution of the legendary Pyramid stage since its creation in 1971 to a permanent stage – also briefly used as a cattle shed in 1981. -

After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Robin Pappas Psychedelics and entheogens began as religious sacraments. They were apotheosized for their mind-expanding powers and were thought to open realms to the world of the Gods. It was not until the first psychedelic compound was discovered in a laboratory setting a mere hundred years ago that they entered into formal scientific study. Although they were initially well-received in academic and professional circles, research into their potential was interrupted when they were made illegal. Only recently have scientists renewed the investigation of psychedelic substances, in the hope of demonstrating their potential in understanding and healing the human mind. This thesis will explore the history of psychedelics and entheogens, consider the causes behind the prohibition of their research, and outline their reintroduction into current scientific research. Psychedelic compounds have proven to be magnifiers of the mind and, under appropriate circumstances, can act as medicaments in both therapeutic and non-medical contexts. By exploring the journey of psychedelic substances from sacraments, to therapeutic aids, to dangerous drugs, and back again, this thesis will highlight what is at stake when politics and misinformation suppresses scientific research. -

The Celtic revival period gave birth to the paradox that still defines the Celtic image to this day, namely that the rurality, simplicity and spirituality of the Celts was to be admired, but that they were uncivilised, irrational and wild at the same time. Recent debates surround the concepts of “Celt”, “Celticity” and “Celtic” are also discussed in this thesis. The first part of this thesis focuses on Celtic history and culture, as well as the complexities surrounding the terminology and the construction of the Celtic image over the centuries. This main body of the thesis analyses the way Celtic elements in contemporary adaptations of the Arthurian narrative form the modern Celtic image. -

The database makes it possible to order references to an object in many ways including in terms of dedication, location, date, and possible authenticity, and it makes data available to derive some history of the object in order to assess the reliability of the information it presents. -

On a clear day, looking east you can see the dark line of hills marking out Exmoor National Park and if you look in a west south-west direction you can even spot the Bristol Channel glistening in the distance. As our eyes pan across the view they rest on a perfectly rounded knoll with a short tower on top. This is Glastonbury Tor. Claimed as the site of the legendary Vale of Avalon and the final resting place of King Arthur, the tor rises up above the flat land surrounding it and is visible for miles around. Why does the mystical Glastonbury Tor rise up out of the surrounding lowlands? First of all look straight ahead and in the middle distance you’ll see three hills which punctuate the flat landscape. From left to right they are Hay Hill, Ben Knowle Hill and Yarley Hill, part of a low ridge just south of the River Axe. Surrounding these hills the Somerset Levels are an area of low-lying farmland. The lowest point is just 0.2 metres above sea level. -

Bulletin of Spanish Studies, Volume LXXXVII, Number 2, 2010 The Figure of Circe and the Power of Knowledge: Competing Philosophies in Caldero´n’s El mayor encanto, amor JONATHAN ELLIS Oklahoma State University At first, Caldero´n’s mythological play follows the well-known story of Homer’s Odyssey. On their way home from the Trojan War, Ulises1 and his crew stop at the island of the witch Circe. Most of the Greeks search the island and arrive at the palace of Circe as their leader waits at the beach. Rather than be wary, they choose to indulge their desires and baser natures. As we know, Circe transforms all but one of them into beasts with a potion. However, from this point on Caldero´n begins to introduce significant changes into the story known from both Homer and Ovid. When Ulises confronts Circe, she gives him also a potion, but he does not drink, having learned of its danger and having learned how to render it useless.2 Defeated, Circe cries out, ‘¿Quie´n cielos airados, / quie´nma´s ha sabido que yo?’ (1515a).3 This early passage is key, indicating that she recognizes knowledge to be the basis of her power with which she attempts to control all of nature, the elements and men.
