No. .. 4 TX SWAN SONG Webster's definition of swan song is "The song anciently fabled to be sung by a swan when dying." Ifathisis my swan song, it is a happy one, for I have enjoyed being your editor for twenty years. True, this is the last issue of AGS that will be edited by me, and I may be ancient but I'm nzdying immediately ?according to my doctor), and I'm not entire- ly mute as some swans are. I have sung before, and I intend to continue reviewing books and submitting articles for our quarterly, subject to the approval of our next editor. The main reason I have resigned the editorship is that I have been blessed with a large quantity of family letters (including many informative ones written during the Civil War), journals, business papers and photographs. Since I have ac- quired a certain amount of skill in deciphering old handwriting and can, with some effort, operate most of the gadgets on my typewriter, I felt that it devolved upon me to transcribe these papers for future generations who might not care to make the effort and devote the necessary time to do so. Transcribing the papers brings me face to face with proper names, some famil- iar from my genealogical research, some historical for one reason or another, and some that may be painstakingly dug out of -The Handbook -of -9 Texas books about the Civil War, encyclopedias, Texas almanacs, Texas histories, or the History --of Gon- zales County, the residence of my great-grandfather. At one time I counted 17 books open on my work table, the living room couch and coffee table, the desk in my study, and the floor! From many sources I contrived to formulate end notes to identify events and people mentioned in the letters. Sorting out and collating [short 0, please! data collected over 30 years does take TIME! I work best early in the morning, in a shabby bathrobe, without benefit of makeup, with curtains drawn against unexpected visitors or saFesmen, with no ap- pointment to keep. One appointment I seldom break: attending my exercise class three times a week. (I interject this in hopes it will influence others to expe- rience what I believe has made me a pretty spry octogenarian.) But when I find letters that a certain relative or friend would especially appreciate, then I have to make myself decent and go make copies for them! When I return, what had seemed a cornucopia of delightful possibilities looks more like a trash pile of insoluble puzzles to be groaningly sorted out. To get to the point of this rambling: I am publishing many personal/business letters in this issue for two reasons: first, I hope they will be interesting to our readers, and second, (in comparison with official records) they present fewer names to be put into our annual index which our ever-generous Bill Koehler has only a couple of weeks to complete. In order for him to get an earlier start inserting names into his computer files of the past three 1991 issues, I am putting the Texas State Library Vertical File Contents article in first place. Thus I can be working on the rest of the magazine and send him copies of the final pages later. Once again let me thank Gerard and Barbara Goudreau for their prodigious ef- forts on this project. This is the 15th installment of this splendid finding aid, which begins on the next page. Thanks to all, HHR 167 , STILES: Copy of 'uStiles Family PJewsletter", Bible records and family information.
