It is customary at Jewish weddings to remember the deceased grandparents of the chassan and kallah. Considering our grandfathers’ shared histories and friendship, it seemed appropriate to record the stories of their lives in honor of our wedding. Chaim’s grandfather, Rabbi Mordechai Meir (“Mottel”) Bryski, was generally a man of few words. When pressed to speak, he pre- ferred to do it through song. Singing played a central role in his life. Be it the songs he grew up with, Chabad nigunim or the nigunim he would sing and compose during his daily prayers. His favorite was the Shir Hageulah, the Song of Redemption (see page 34).

Rebbetzin Chave Hecht working at her desk for Camp Emunah, as she has for the past 60 years. 22 n’shei Chabad NEWSLETTER | nsheichabadnewsletter.com Rebbetzin Chave The name Rebbetzin Chave Hecht, zol gezunt zein, is synonymous with Camp HechtEmunah, the first Chabad overnight camp which she and her late husband, the legendary activist, chossid, counselor and educator Rabbi Yaakov Yehuda (J.J.) Hecht, founded in 1953. Rebbetzin Hecht has been running Camp Emu- nah for 60 years without stop. Rebbetzin Hecht was interviewed exclusively for the N’shei Chabad Newsletter by Mrs. Rosa Grossman. hen my husband and I were chosson and kallah, in the year 5705 (1945), it was customary to have yechidus with the Fri- erdiker Rebbe before the chassunah. We were told two or three weeks before our chassunah that the Freirdiker Rebbe was not feeling well. My chosson made a call every day to the Frierdiker Rebbe’s office to inquire about the Rebbe’s Whealth. The answer he got was always the same: “The Rebbe is not feeling well.” On Sunday morning, the day of our chassunah, I got a call from the Frier- diker Rebbe’s office, telling me to come with my parents and grandparents to 770. My chosson also received the same phone call, telling him to come with his parents. Upon arriving at 770, the Frierdiker Rebbe’s secretary put each fam- ily in a separate room. The Frierdiker Rebbe was then told that both families, with the chosson and kallah, were in 770. The Frierdiker Rebbe gave instruc- tions to his secretary to tell both families to come in together with the chosson and the kallah.

ב“ה An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE’S Erev Shabbos Parshas Bo, February 3, 2017 my THE FAREWELL STORY Generously CEREMONY sponsored by the RABBI ZUSHE POSNER As I was leaving, my brother saw me. I told him I had to go to Brownsville, but he objected: “You have to stay because this week is the Yahrzeit of the Rebbe’s mother, and he will be saying the Haftarah. You have to stay for that.” I tried to tell him that the Rebbe passed away and won’t be saying Haftarah, but he was so shocked that he almost slapped me. Then he sat down and began crying. I left him like that and went. I came to Brownsville and told the chasidim to come to 770, where services were then held. I remember that both the sons-in-law of the Previous Rebbe — Rabbi Shemaryahu Gurary and the future Rebbe — who was then known as the Ramash — were called up to the s a youngster, I was enrolled in the Chabad Torah. Some people were crying, but the Ramash was yeshivah high school, which was then located stoic. The Rebbe Rashab The 5th Lubavitcher Rebbe RABBI SHOLOM DOVBER SCHNEERSOHN 2 Beis Nissan - 100 Years KOVETZ “Di Kesovim Loz Ich Eich” -Melbourne, australia- CHAI ELUL 5780 PUBLISHED and COPYRIGHT © 5780-2020 by Rabbinical College of Australia & New Zealand 67 Alexandra St, East St. Kilda 3183 [email protected] [email protected] Compiled by Mendel Hendel Design by Yossi Reicher 2 Kovetz “Di Kesovim Loz Ich Eich” 3 Foreword Beis Nissan, this year, marks 100 years since the passing of the Rebbe Rashab, Rabbi Sholom Dovber of Lubavitch. In connection with this historic milestone, we are proud to present this publication entitled "Di Kesovim Loz Ich Eich" ("I leave you my [Chassidic] writings"). This title is from a famous line which the Rebbe Rashab said shortly before his passing (see further on pg. 7) and is an apt title for the kovetz which focuses on the later events in his life. The Rebbe Rashab stood at the helm of the Lubavitch dynasty during a period of immense change to the structure of Jewish life. He lived at the turn of the twentieth century, when the bulk of Eastern European Jewry transitioned from shtetl life to industrial societies. To ensure that Yiddishkeit and Chassidus would flourish in this new environment, notwithstanding the fact that the external lifestyle was not as religiously inclined, the Rebbe Rashab saw the need for people to be more inwardly Jewish in order for them to remain independent and unaffected by their environs. For this purpose, in 5657, he established Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim.

Memento of the wedding celebration of Osher & Esti Gutnick November 10, Introduction It is with immense gratitude to Hashem that we are celebrating the wedding of our dear children Osher and Esti. We would like to thank all of our family and friends for coming and making our simcha so special. As a token of appreciation we present you with this t’shurah (memento) in the tradition of the Frierdiker Rebbe who distributed a t’shurah at the Rebbe’s wedding. Part I ,ז"ל The chosson’s paternal grandfather, Rabbi Chaim Gutnick was a shliach of both the Frierdiker Rebbe and the Rebbe to Australia for a period spanning over sixty years of renowned and outstanding rabbinical leadership. During Rabbi Gutnick’s visits to the Rebbe in New York in the early lameds (1970s) he was privileged to be invited to the Rebbe’s Yom Tov meals. These meals took place on the second floor of 770, formerly the Frierdiker Rebbe’s home. The Rebbe would discuss a wide range of Jewish topics with his guests, from the deeply mystical to the profoundly technical. A small number of yeshiva students would listen to these conversations and transcribe them from memory after Yom Tov. These transcriptions were later published in a two-volume work entitled Hamelech Bimsibo.1 The dialogue therein between the Rebbe and Rabbi Gutnick has been translated2 for the first time in this t’shurah. While we cannot guarantee the preciseness of the transcript of the Rebbe’s words, it is hoped that the wide-ranging divrei Torah it contains will enlighten and stimulate all those who study it and reveal a glimpse of a unique aspect of the Rebbe’s leadership.
