The fish genera Gasterosteus, Hucho, Oxynoemacheilus, Salmo, and Schizothorax are examples of these groups among vertebrates, and the genera Magnibursatus (Trematoda), Margaritifera, Potomida, Microcondylaea, Leguminaia, Unio (Mollusca), and Phagocata (Planaria), among invertebrates. There is reason to believe that their ancestors spread to Europe through the Paratethys (or the proto-Paratethys basin that preceded it), where intense speciation took place and new genera of aquatic organisms arose.     Maria Shishmanova THE CENTRAL REGIONS AND THE SOFIA AGGLOMERATION AREA Abstract. The research presents central regions in Bulgaria using taxonometric method with relevant conclusions. Each municipality in central regions is particularly examined by the elaborated methodic materials. The developed agglomeration areas are situated in the central regions. Sofia agglomeration area is presented using General Spatial Plan of Sofia municipality and Municipal Development Plan (MDP) of Sofia metropolitan municipality. It is set out the vision of development and its priorities, objectives and measures. Key words: central regions, agglomeration areas, Sofia agglomeration area, General Spatial Plan, Municipal Development Plan. Introduction The Central regions comprise 45 percent of the Bulgarian territory. The agglomeration areas are formed in them. The present study examines the development of the Sofia agglomeration area – a metropolis in the central regions of Bulgaria. The agglomeration areas are formed within the range of the central regions in Bulgaria – 6 agglomeration areas with a center – a large city, 30 agglomeration areas with a center – a medium-sized town. Six of the agglomeration areas are formations with more than three municipalities, five of them are with three municipalities each, ten are with 2 municipalities and the rest 15 are autonomous municipalities with an established core. These areas represent the backbone of the economy and social and human potential of the country. They have the highest degree of competitiveness and attractiveness for investment and innovation. Eighty eight municipalities with a total population of 5885455 people1 are included within the scope of the agglomeration areas, which constitutes 77.4 percent of the population of the country.

The energy reserves and production potential of the Caspian The issue of Caspian energy development has been dominated by four factors. The first is uncertain oil prices. These pose a challenge both to oilfield devel- opers and to the promoters of pipelines. The boom prices of 2000, coupled with supply shortages within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), have made development of the resources of the Caspian area very attractive. By contrast, when oil prices hovered around the $10 per barrel level in late 1998 and early 1999, the price downturn threatened not only the viability of some of the more grandiose pipeline projects to carry Caspian oil to the outside world, but also the economics of basic oilfield exploration in the region. While there will be some fly-by-night operators who endeavour to secure swift returns in an era of high prices, the major energy developers, as well as the majority of smaller investors, will continue to predicate total production costs (including carriage to market) not exceeding $10–12 a barrel. The second is the geology and geography of the area. The importance of its geology was highlighted when two of the first four international consortia formed to look for oil in blocks off Azerbaijan where no wells had previously been drilled pulled out in the wake of poor results.1 The geography of the area involves the complex problem of export pipeline development and the chicken- and-egg question whether lack of pipelines is holding back oil and gas pro- duction or vice versa.

Along with a positive result, they had a number of negative consequences. Many researchers address to the problem of reservoirs, especially in the second half of the twentieth century in Russia, USA, China and some European countries (Poland, Ukraine, and others). A great contribution to the study of this field of science has Russian scientists: Avakyan, Matarzin, Ikonnikov, Shirokov, Edelstein, Ershova, Berkowitzch, Rulyova, Nazarov, et al. Cheboksary reservoir was formed by the hydroelectric dam of the same name on the river Volga. Within Chuvashia Volga has a length of 127 km. Like the whole valley, this plot suffered a complete overhaul with the establishment in 1981 of the last stage of the Volga Hydroelectric Power Plant Cascade - Cheboksary hydroelectric plant. Since 1981 Cheboksary reservoir is exploited on unplanned water-level mark - 63 m instead of 68 m on the project. It is necessary to find the optimal path of sustainable development for the Cheboksary reservoir, because for over 30 years reservoir exploited by unplanned mark (63 m instead 68 m), and Cheboksary hydro-power plant is an unfinished construction project. Department of Physical Geography and Geomorphology of the Chuvash State University studied Cheboksary reservoir since 1992. There are obtained results of monitoring banks, geoecological study of water masses and coastal geosystems, defined zones, types and extent of its recreational use. There is defined maximum coastal retreat since 1981.

Consuming plate boundaries are selected on geophysical and geological grounds, and are assumed connected through modern oceanic regions by shearing and accreting boundaries. The resultant plate fragments are rotated to fit geological and morphological similarities, and the timing of tectonic events, without violating available constraints. The cumulative rotations are plotted to illustrate behind-arc spreading in the western Mediterranean basins and closure upon the Adriatic and Ionian seas from east and west following northward motion of the central Alpine plate fragment.
