THE GORGES OF THE RIVER FROM AUREC SUR LOIRE TO LE PUY EN VELAY

This is a walking holiday following part of the river Loire (said to be ‘the last unspoiled river of Europe’). It takes you along forested tracks through deep rocky gorges. The views are remarkable, with chateaus and villages which nestle down close to the river. In this valley the young river Loire asserts its natural rights: only a narrow railway line trespasses on its preserves and follows the water like a shadow. The gorges are of interest to naturalists, harbouring a large number of bird species which have found security along its steep banks. The walking is not too arduous and there are plenty of opportunities to pause on small pebbly beaches tucked away in a lacework of greenery, a perfect setting for an interlude of relaxation, soothed by the musical waters of the Loire.

PROGRAMME FL081

6 days, 5 nights and 4 days’ walking.

DAY 2: From Aurec sur Loire to Bas en Basset: 18 km.

This first day’s walk along the Loire takes you through lush countryside. You pass through a number of little villages and not far from the Château de Rochebaron which dates from the 12th century and overlooks the valley. Estimated walking time 4h30.

DAY 3: From Bas en Basset to : 25 km.

The first part of the day’s walk takes you on a traverse well above the river itself. On this first section of the walk you have some wonderful views over the valley. Later, following the river again, you reach Retournac. Estimated walking time between 6h30 and 7h.

DAY 4: From Retounac to Vorey sur Arzon: 22 km.

Some particularly picturesque villages, such as Chamalières which sits next to the river, are included in this day’s walk. You have a splendid view of the 12th century Château d’Artias. Then you pass through Roche en Régnier before getting back into the valley of the Loire and reaching Vorez sur Arzon. Estimated walking time 6h15.

DAY 5: From Vorey sur Arzon to Le Puy en Velay: 27Km

This is a particularly beautiful section of the walk which passes through a number of small villages. You pass within two kilometres of the Château de Lavoute Polignac. If you think this day’s walk might be too long for you, you can shorten it by taking the train from Vorey to Lavoute and start walking at Lavoute. After passing through some more small villages you arrive at Le Puy en Velay.
