K. INTERACT

By the time this report is read at the April Board meeting, the Interact Dominican Republic Mission trip members will be back in the United States and have many stories to tell about their trip. We hope to attend a Board meeting to share our mission trip with you. There were several members of the Interact Club who helped with music stations at the Pre-School Morning Out event that was held in March. The PTO groups at the elementary schools have already requested the Club’s help during their Family Fun Nights and with the Pioneer Day at Hans Herr Elementary School. We continue to help with projects in the community, such as the L-S Idol competition, Tea with the American Girl, and the Lancaster Rotary Magic Show, which give students service hours towards their graduation requirement.

5 04/04/16 B. ODYSSEY OF THE MIND

Martin Meylin’s Odyssey of the Mind team traveled to Millersville University for regional competition on Saturday, March 12, 2016. Team members this year were eighth graders, Karli Longenecker (co-captain), Emma Medlock (co-captain), Luke Brodersen, and Sean McClary and seventh graders, Dominic Brazzle, Amber Tirado, and Brennan Havey. The students were judged on a long-term problem solution, its presentation, and a spontaneous performance. This year, the students chose to write and perform a play based upon an Aesop fable going viral. The students practiced from December through competition day twice each week and four times a week during the last two weeks. Although the team placed sixth out of seven teams in their division, the team scored an eight percent increase over last year, their highest in the last four years and the smallest gap between them and first place in the last four years. This team was an excellent example of ambassadors for the L-S School District. The team was coached by Mr. Brian Griffith.

A. ELEMENTARY STUDENTS CELEBRATE READ ACROSS AMERICA

March 2, 2016, marked the birthday of the beloved children’s author and illustrator, Dr. Seuss. In celebration, students celebrated Read Across America Week from February 29 to March 4, 2016.

The staff and students at Lampeter Elementary School celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a week of reading and literacy-related activities. The week began with daily morning announcements, which featured a passage from a Dr. Seuss book. Each student was able to guess which book the passage was from. Students completed guess slips. Correctly answered guess slips were submitted to the office, where winners were drawn for prizes. PTO parents and Lampeter teachers combined efforts to decorate each of the four grade level learning pods according to Dr. Seuss book themes. Classrooms visited each pod in a round robin fashion. The students also took part in a variety of theme-related activities. Throughout the week, students and teachers dressed in their best Dr. Seuss theme clothing and participated in numerous classroom activities. Special thanks go out to Mrs. Brigid Hillan for her hard work in making this such a successful learning experience.

Hans Herr Elementary School students celebrated Read Across America throughout the week. Excerpts from Dr. Seuss books were read on the morning announcements by Hans Herr Elementary School students. All students had the opportunity to guess from which book the excerpt was chosen. Students entered their guesses in the class boxes located outside the office. One correct winner was chosen from each grade daily to receive an ice cream treat on Friday.

B. GRANDPARENT VISITATION DAYS HELD AT LAMPETER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

During the week of March 21, 2016, Lampeter Elementary School opened its doors to students, grandparents, and special persons. As usual, the event was extremely well attended and enjoyed by all. Grandparents visited their child’s classroom and watched a typical day at school. Some teachers opted to have their students perform Reader’s Theater activities, musical performances, and other activities to showcase student learning.

C. ELEMENTARY DIVISION HOLDS KINDERGARTEN PARENT MEETING

An informational meeting for parents of incoming kindergarten students for the 2016-2017 school year will be held on April 4, 2016, in the Lampeter Elementary School Cafeteria. Presenters Dr. William Bray, Lampeter Principal, and Mrs. Brenda Malcolm, Early Childhood Coordinator, will provide information to parents regarding the kindergarten registration process, the kindergarten program and procedures. The presentation will include a question and answer session, which will be extremely beneficial to new parents.

D. THIRD GRADE HEROES

Once again, third grade students enjoyed visits from their High School Heroes. Thank you to all the high school students who have pledged to be drug and alcohol free! You serve as tremendous role models for our students!

E. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

During the month of February (American Heart Month), the third, fourth, and fifth grade students at Hans Herr Elementary School had the opportunity to participate in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart event in their physical education classes.

This gave our students the chance to perform an outstanding community service as they raised funds for potentially lifesaving research in the fight against our nation’s number one and three killers, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Many of our students were jumping in honor of a family relative or friend.

The students exceeded the expectations of our Hans Herr physical education teacher, Mr. Bill Valenzo, in raising $6,431. Kaitlin Churchill, grade 3, was the top fundraiser in the entire school.

A special thank you to all our students who helped to make our event such a huge success!

7 04/04/16 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT – Mr. William E. Griscom, Jr., Technology Director

A. CORE NETWORK SWITCH UPGRADE

After upgrading network switches in every building, Mr. Andrew Hoover will install the new core network switch in the Network Operations Center (NOC) over the spring break. This switch will allow the District to increase its speed from a 2Gb connection to a 20Gb connection between the buildings. Because the District purchased HP switches, all recurring support costs and warranty expenses have been eliminated. HP offers a lifetime warranty without any support fees.

B. PROJECTORS

Over the spring break, new projectors will be installed at Hans Herr and Lampeter Elementary Schools. These projectors are being installed in the libraries, art rooms, and music rooms. There are a handful of rooms that will be addressed this summer, but the majority of rooms throughout the District have either a projector with a screen or a projector with an interactive whiteboard.

C. ONBOARDING PROCESS

The Technology Department has finalized a setup that helps when new individuals are hired or when employees leave the District. Using the system, Ms. Kelly Byers can submit a request for a new employee with a variety of options, which then creates tickets for individuals who need to take some sort of action. For example, a new employee may need a PowerSchool account, a computer account, and door access. When the request is submitted, a ticket will be created for Mr. Andrew Hoover to create the account, Mrs. Julie Thiboldeaux to set up the computer, and Mr. Glenn Davis to provide door access. This is one of many ways HR and IT are working together to streamline operations.

D. SCHOOLOGY USER GROUP MEETING

Mr. William Griscom and Ms. Elizabeth Toigo attended a Schoology User Group meeting at IU13. The meeting covered some of the new features of Schoology, as well as a roadmap for the next year. Schoology, which the District adopted as its Learning Management System (LMS) in 2015, is being used in grades 3-12. One of the greatest benefits of Schoology is the connection to other schools and online communities. Teachers can collaborate and share course content across the country because of Schoology’s widespread adoption and cloud hosting. The District discontinued the use of Edline this year and will discontinue the use and support of Moodle at the end of the 2015-2016 school year. Both systems were competing LMS products used over a number of years at L-S. With the success of Schoology, neither system is needed.
