Plant collection .............................................................................................................................. 25 Introduction The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN), a part of the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS), is a body that provides relevant, useful and informative data, tools and services for monitoring of Australian ecosystems. Specifically, TERN measures key terrestrial ecosystem attributes over time from continental scale to field sites at hundreds of representative locations and openly provide data that enable researchers to detect and interpret ecosystem changes. TERN’s Ecosystem Surveillance platform conducts field surveys and sampling across a national network of plots and transects following standardized published methods. The data and samples collected from these surveys helps scientists and land managers nationwide to better monitor, understand and manage change in vegetation structure and composition, land cover and soil characteristics. In June 2011, TERN undertook a survey in Brookfield Conservation Park, South Australia. The survey involved vegetation and soils work following the AusPlots Rangelands methodology, with 5 plots completed. These plots were revisited in June

    Botanical name Acacia colletioides Benth., London J. Bot. 1: 336 (1842) The botanical name is derived from Colletia (a genus in the family Rhamnaceae) and the Greek suffix -oides (like). Some species referred to Colletia have a resemblance to the spiny, rigid foliage of this Acacia. Common names Wait-a-while, Pin-bush, Spine Bush. Characteristic features Large, prickly, much-branched shrubs. Phyllodes +/- terete, sessile, rigid, straight to shallowly curved, widely spreading, finely 8-nerved (with a distinct inter-nerve space between each nerve), narrowed to needle-like points. Heads sub-globular on short peduncles. Pods strongly curved to openly coiled or twisted. Seeds black and 2/3 sheathed by a conspicuous, orange or yellow aril. Description Habit. Harsh, rigid, prickly, much-branched, dense, rounded, usually multi-stemmed shrubs (0.5)1-3 m tall and about the same across, maturing to single-stemmed small trees 3-4 m tall with a dense canopy occupying 50% of the total plant height, in open sites (e.g. roadverges) it grows as a domed plant with the canopy extending to ground level, in dense vegetation it can grow as a small, erect plant with spindly stems and non-spreading crowns (however, these forms are not common in the Kalannie region). Branchlets. Glabrous or sparsely hairy, scarred where phyllodes have fallen. Phyllodes. More or less terete, sessile, inserted on distinct, yellow stem projections, 1.5-3(-4) cm long, 1-1.5 mm in diameter, rigid, widely spreading, straight to shallowly curved, green, glabrous; longitudinal nerves 8, widely spaced and distinct; apices narrowed to rigid, needle-like points.

O'Leary State Herbarium of South Australia, Plant Biodiversity Centre PO Box 2732, Kent Town, South Australia 5071 Email: [email protected] Abstract A new species, Acacia toondulya, is described and illustrated. It has a restricted distribution in the western Gawler Ranges, Eyre Peninsula, South Australia and is most closely related to A. notabilis. Introduction The taxon described here as A. toondulya was first collected in 1969, and again in 1972. These specimens were identified as A. beckleri and A. notabilis due to their large phyllodes and flowers, or pods with transverse seed. A specimen collected from Toondulya Bluff in 1981 with a distinct pruinose coating on its branchlets and racemes (but in young bud) at first remained undetermined for some time and then finally identified as A. cretacea. At this time a study of the biology of A. cretacea was being conducted by the Conservation Biology Unit at the Black Hill Flora Park, and with earlier reports of populations of A. cretacea occurring in the Gawler Ranges a visit was made to Toondulya Bluff. The resulting collections made with inflorescences containing 80 flowers per head, pods with transverse seed, and photos showing a slender, erect habit, indicated all the previous determinations to be incorrect. This relatively inaccessible and poorly collected area was then visited by the author, where population collections and field studies have shown this taxon to be worthy of formal species ranking.

Koen1 1 Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 445, Cowra, NSW 2794, AUSTRALIA 2 Department of Natural Resources, PO Box 53, Orange, NSW 2800, AUSTRALIA 3 Corresponding author, email: [email protected] Abstract: The assumption that ‘soils’ and ‘vegetation’ are closely associated was tested by describing soils and vegetation along a Travelling Stock Reserve west of Grenfell, New South Wales (lat 33° 55’S, long 147° 45’E). The transect was selected on the basis of (a) minimising the effects of non-soil factors (human interference, climate and relief) on vegetation and (b) the presence of various soil and vegetation types as indicated by previous mapping. ‘Soils’ were considered at three levels: soil landscapes (a broad mapping unit widely used in central western NSW), soil types (according to a range of classifications) and soil properties (depth, pH, etc.). ‘Vegetation’ was considered in three ways: vegetation type (in various classifications), density/floristic indices (density of woody species, abundance of native species, etc.) and presence/absence of individual species. Sites along the transect were grouped according to soil landscapes or soil types and compared to vegetation types or indices recorded at the sites. Various measures indicated low associations between vegetation types and soil landscapes or soil types. Except for infrequent occurrences of a soil type or landscape, any one soil type or landscape was commonly associated with a number of vegetation types and any one vegetation type was associated with a number of soil landscapes or soil types.
