[The acquaintance with salt was the first step to a higher culture.] (H. Freydank 1929, 145) Die Geschichte des Salzes ist die Geschichte des Ganges der Civilisation überhaupt. [The history of salt is the history of the progress of civilization.] (V. Hehn 1873, 73) The common and daily presence of salt in our lives today has lessened our awareness of how valuable salt is. Things were different but a couple of centuries ago, when the possession of salterns was of tremendous importance to the mercantile economy of absolutist regimes. Wars were fought over salt; in 1611, for instance, a protracted conflict between the dukes of Bavaria and the archbishops of Salzburg over the right to exploit the saltworks at Berchtesgaden ended with the overthrow of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau (1559-1617). Up to the middle of the 19th century, indeed, the economic importance of salt was comparable to that of crude oil in our present-day economy. Salt occurs naturally as rock-salt or in dissolved form as brine. According to legends, the discovery of saline springs frequently resulted from the intense observation of nature, as humans took note of places where animals went to lick salt, and became sensitive to the particular characteristics of the plant cover in the vicinity of salt springs. Two entirely different strategies were applied as salt winning techniques: evaporation of brine and mining of rock-salt. Producing salt from brine involves several steps: obtaining and preparing brine, cleaning and condensing it, refining and boiling it until the salt crystallizes, and finally preparing the salt for transportation. This article is concerned with the earliest stages in the development of such techniques in Central Europe during the Neolithic. The relevant archaeological evidence will be presented below in a chronological order, followed by some remarks on Neolithic salt trade. In general, the dating of prehistoric artifacts and structures connected to the exploitation, trade, and consumption of salt presents considerable difficulties, as chronologically sensitive material is rarely uncovered in close association with salt exploitation-related features. As we shall see below, the frequent appearance of rich archaeological finds in the surroundings of medieval and post-medieval saltworks cannot be considered as evidence of a corresponding prehistoric exploitation of salt; in practice, such correlations are often deceptive. Neither can isolated finds of salt-producing ceramics (briquetage) in settlements or graves serve as a clear-cut indication of salt production; these are evidence, at best, of salt trade. In Central European inland areas, the most common procedure of salt winning documented during the Neolithic is brine evaporation by means of briquetage. The forms of briquetage, generally divided into supporting elements (stands) and vessels, show great regional and chronological variation (fig. 1). The ombc ination is based on a hierarchical model of scale levels. The necessary data and methods used to obtain the results are chosen so as to define transfer functions from one scale level to another. We apply our method to data sets from western Germany that cover early Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman, and Merovingian times as well as historical data from AD 1800. Error margins and natural and historical variability are discussed. Our results for nonstate societies are always lower than conventional estimations compiled from the literature, and we discuss the reasons for this finding. At the end, we compare the calculated local and global population densities with other estimations from different parts of the world.

    Bell Beaker resilience? The 4.2ka BP event and its implications for environments and societies in Northwest Europe Jos Kleijne, Mara Weinelt, Johannes Müller Abstract This paper deals with the Bell Beaker phenomenon in Northwest Europe, and the question of its development around 2200 BC, in relation to the well-known 4.2ka climatic event. The duration of settlement occupation and the subsistence economy are the variables used in this study to address this resilience on a regional scale. Concluding, we state that regional variability exists in the ways in which communities were impacted by the 4.2ka event. In addition to agricultural intensification, the flexibility of subsistence strategies seems to have played an important role. Keywords Resilience; Bell Beaker; Northwest Europe; Settlement; Subsistence Introduction From 2600 BC onwards, Western and Central Europe are characterised by what archaeologists have historically labelled as “the Bell Beaker phenomenon” (e.g. Vander Linden 2013). In various parts of Europe, especially the Iberian Peninsula, the end of this phenomenon is often considered to date around 2200 BC, with the rise of the El Argar civilisation in the Southeast of the Peninsula, associated with significant changes in social organisation, settlement structure and food economy (Lull et al 2015). The role of climate in the demise of the Bell Beaker phenomenon, and the resilience and vulnerability of prehistoric communities, is currently being debated (e.g. Blanco-Gonzalez et al 2018; Hinz et al in press). Specifically, an abrupt climatic event around 2200 BC, commonly known as ‘the 4.2ka event’, has a well attested influence on human society in other parts of the world.

    Fishing for Meaning: Lived Space and early Neolithic of Orkney Introduction “Being at the junction of the North Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean … the sea is a constant, unforgettable presence in the islands.” David Fraser (1983, 224) The ‘unforgettable presence’ of the sea is notable by its absence in many accounts of the Neolithic of coastal and island areas within the British Isles. The story as most frequently told is one of terrestrial action; of monumental construction, polished stone technology, pottery and domesticates. When the sea does emerge it is often of a homogenous nature, a resource to be exploited with little significance. This treatment is diametrically opposed to the time spent in deriving meaning from action within the terrestrial landscapes of the Neolithic, within which all manner of subtle nuances and potential references are considered. Yet to people living in coastal areas and small island groups, perceptions of the sea are often anything but homogenous. As such, a myriad of skills, relationships and experiences associated with maritime practice have been marginalised in our reconstructions. This poses a problem when we come to contextualise any action within the Neolithic, maritime or terrestrial, such as monument construction because we have little idea of how these different practices articulate. This paper considers how an integration of maritime and terrestrial data within a ‘lived-space’ perspective can change our understandings. An approach that challenges stereotypes and explores relationships through the temporal and spatial nature of action is advocated. Attention will first be given to identifying archaeological stereotypes, before outlining what a lived-space perspective entails, and following its application to early Neolithic material from the Knap of Howar on Papa Westray in Orkney.

BirdLife International’s publications on IBAs in 1989 and in 2000 mentioned 107 sites and 285 sites resp. in Germany. Meanwhile, through recent intensive investigations, the list of German IBAs has been completed and now contains 542 sites which are named and briefly characterized in this publication. IBAs cover an area of 56.509 km² in Germany, equal to a share of 15.8 of land surface. IBAs were selected in accordance with internatio- nal criteria which are specified for Germany by DOER et al. (2002) in this issue. Data collection and site selection have been performed by the federal branches of NABU (BirdLife partner Germany) and regional ornithological societies under the umbrella of Dachverband Deutscher Avifaunisten. The procedure of site selection in different federal states is detailed in separate chapters. The list of IBAs is sorted by federal states and shows names, national and international codes, geographical coordinates, size, and criteria used for selection. For IBAs which have been designated as SPAs, SPA codes are given.
