Introduced in London in 1969, the phrase “Mind the Gap” is a sound or visual warning phrase issued to train passengers to “take care” when crossing the gap onto the train. 93% of the Christian Churches/Churches of Christ in the USA are in cities that have a population of less than 175,000. When we look to the largest cities in the world, the presence of our churches is even smaller. According to new resources, by 2030, 72% of the world will be living in cities that have over two million in population. The Church needs to mind the gap concerning the number of churches serving our cities! God calls his people to places that need Him. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of how God called his workers to spread the Gospel in the city because there are many people there who need Him. For example, He called Jonah to the city of Nineveh and Paul to the city of Corinth to spread God’s word. Because of their efforts, these cities were transformed from wicked places to places where God’s love spread. We’re excited to be furthering this discussion in Kansas City, as we all learn how to “mind the gap” and “embrace the city” all over the world. We’re excited you’re here at #ICOM2019! — Jeff Fife, 2019 ICOM President, Brazil River of Life Ministries

Welcome to ICOM 2019: MIND THE GAP – Embracing the City

From the Director... Welcome to ICOM 2019! We started working on this year’s theme the last time we were in Kansas City, in 2013! It’s kind of cool, the idea of an urban emphasis was presented to us in Kansas City and here we are, six years later, bringing it to life. This weekend is going to be focused on both domestic and international urban ministry. Don’t miss out on these opportunities to learn more about global cities. Spend time in the Urban Center in the exhibit hall, the prayer room, attend the two tracks of Urban workshops - dive in! We’re excited for the main session speakers as they all bring urban ministry to life in their ministries. If you’re looking for testimonies and stories of those who are serving - join us Friday & Saturday mornings for the God Moves sessions. There will be a number of facts & figures you will hear this weekend, but the bottom line is that Christian Churches are predominantly found in rural and suburban areas. Cities with millions of residents are located all over the world and the Christian Church is still not greatly present in the city. The city plays a significant role in spreading the gospel. Thank you for coming to ICOM and supporting missionaries serving globally! So much has gone into this weekend. The ICOM staff and volunteers have done a lot to bring all this together. We hope you enjoy your time here at #ICOM2019. — David Empson, Executive Director

November 14-17, 2019 • Kansas City, MO 5 First time here? FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What activities are available for my kids? We are pleased to offer free programming for infants through 5th grade in KidZone. They will have their own secure area with interactive activities that teach them about world missions. You can find specific times for each day on page 21. What is SICOM? SICOM is specifically focused on reaching 6th-12th grade students. During the weekend, students will learn about and pray with missionaries, participate in a building project, package meals for those going hungry & much more! Wondering what post-high school will look like for your students? “Into the Future” is a time to talk with and learn about the many faith-based college options that are available to them. See the full activity schedule on page 23. What can I expect from the exhibit hall? Experience an exhibit hall filled with organizations serving all over the globe. Want to find a specific organization, become a prayer warrior, or just learn what is happening in the efforts of global missions? We’ll have over 350 exhibitors ready for you to explore! See the full list of exhibitors on page 50. I am looking to serve in missions vocationally. Where do I begin? Check out the Career Board for internships & jobs on our website. This is a combination of month, summer, semester or year-long internships, as well as part or full time employment opportunities. If you’re interested in “going,” check out the Mobilization workshops! What topics will be offered for workshops? ICOM tries to offer a wide variety of workshop topics. We strive to have a balance of tracks that center around missions, while at the same time offering topics that come from what’s going on now in America & around the world. There are 160+ workshops spread across 6 time slots: both Friday and Saturday at 9 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm. Workshops can be found starting on page 41. 6 International Conference On Missions • www.theicom.org Why is ICOM important? ICOM is committed to encouraging, equipping and enlisting workers to make disciples. Now more than ever we need to invest our time and passion into the effort of global evangelism. Perhaps you will SEND or perhaps you will GO or even if you don’t know what that looks like in your personal life, ICOM is the perfect place for you to explore your options! With over 350 organizations and multiple avenues of getting involved - this is the perfect place to find your passion. How does ICOM help missionaries and attendees? ICOM strives to have a low cost entry fee for both attendees and exhibitors. Many conferences charge double the cost or more for an exhibit booth, but we know that some missionaries don’t have the funds to pay those exhibitor fees. We also understand that most of the attendees coming to ICOM are regular church-going people. Not every family is able to spend over $100 on a conference, so we try to keep our cost low and even have programming for students and children included in the family price. During the conference weekend, we also have a Pre-Con time where missionaries can come and fellowship with others serving on the field. They are given a free night’s stay for coming early, free dinner and free breakfast. We also provide FREE licensed counseling onsite for missionaries that just need to talk to someone. What services does ICOM provide to missions organizations and missionaries? In 2017, ICOM was honored to take over the work of Missions Services (MSA). This service allows us to design and print the newsletters for missionaries serving overseas at a lower cost. We are also able to post those newsletters on the Missions Map on our website for others to engage with and learn about God’s work around the world. Our Career Board helps to bring together those wanting to serve with those who need some help. This is a digital tool that allows missionaries to post openings within their organization as well as allows those who are looking for a place to serve to view those postings and contact the organization directly. What is ICOM Services? We are privileged to have EnterMission and Tower Accounting under the ICOM Services umbrella. EnterMission is a 10-month discipleship training experience for young adults (ages 17-25) which includes both domestic and foreign missions experience with the possibility of earning 12 credit hours to Johnson University. Accepting applications for 2020! Find out more at booth 1319. Tower Accounting is the newest branch of ICOM Services as of 2019. The goal of Tower Accounting is to give quality and efficient accounting services at a low cost for missionaries and non-profit organizations. TRACK: Category Title Speaker Description ROOM NUMBER ENTERMISSION: Church Becoming a Post Modern Monk: In spite of how things may appear, not all is doom and gloom for the church, however life in Engagement Engaging Culture Beyond the a post-modern world brings with it specific challenges. Following in the footsteps of Europe, 2201 Walls of the Church Chris Irwin the local church is no longer a power player in culture and can no longer rely on it’s ability to attract people to come. Instead, churches must prepare believers to actually live out their priesthood beyond the walls of the church, something that has been taught in theory but not put into practice. How is this done? What can a “normal” believer do beyond the walls of their church to engage culture and effect change in peoples lives? What can a church do who has recognized that discipleship has focused more on “believing correctly” (orthodoxy) than on “living correctly” (orthopraxis) and who wants to prepare their people to go into all of the world? RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT & The Anatomy of a Successful Why do some ministries raise more money than others? What do they know that we don’t?
