Archetypal Interpretation of “Sleeping Beauty”: Awakening the Power of Love by Grace Hogstad In Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), the second of Richard Wagner‟s four-opera suite The Ring of the Nibelung, Wotan casts a magic spell on Brünnhilde, and she sleeps for a generation. Likewise, in the fairytale “Sleeping Beauty,” the princess is pricked by a spindle and magically falls asleep for one hundred years. Although the first print version of “Sleeping Beauty” (1528) is about 350 years older than The Valkyrie (1873), they both come from the same source, the Völsunga Saga, a thirteenth century Icelandic prose saga that tells of the origin and decline of the Volsung clan. Included in the saga is the story of Sigurd and Brynhilde and her magic sleep. Wagner acknowledges the Nordic saga as one source of his narrative, and he has written the poetry of The Ring of the Nibelung using the saga‟s plot, stringing it through the four cycles of the opera. Likewise, fairytale scholar Maria Tatar calls this the source of the “Sleeping Beauty” story in her book The Annotated Brothers Grimm (233). This study looks at different versions of “Sleeping Beauty,” reading seven versions of the fairytale historically. My interpretation begins with the oral tradition that circulated in the 1300s and ends with the 1910 version of the tale, including an undated adaptation that I consider to be a spin-off of the 1910 version. In doing so, a pattern or a story emerges out of the various iterations of “Sleeping Beauty.” The survey goes from the crudest version of the fairytale to the more developed Italian, French, German, and English versions, spanning six centuries of development. -

Nicholas Burkhardt played by David Giuntoli is the show's protagonist and titular Grimm. Nick is a homicide detective who discovers he is descended from a line of Grimms : hunters who fight supernatural forces. Even before his abilities manifested, Nick Mothers Grimm an exceptional ability to make quick Mothers Grimm accurate deductions about the motivations and pasts of individuals. This power has now expressed itself as his ability to perceive the Mothers Grimm that nobody else can see. Nick had wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Juliette, for some time, but he felt that he Mothers Grimm have to tell her about his life as a Grimm beforehand. Throughout the first season, Nick struggles to maintain balance Mothers Grimm his normal life and his life as a grimm. The two tend to cross when he works cases that involve wesenwhich are the creatures of the grimm world. As Nick dives deeper into his grimm heritage, he begins to train with Monroe to learn about the wesen Mothers Grimm Portland and to use the Mothers Grimm that his aunt Marie left behind. As of episode 19, Nick had successfully killed three reaperscreatures that are sent out to kill grimms hence the grimm reaper title. He kills the first in defense of Marie, and the other two are killed in self-defense after being sent Nick's lead suspect in a case. -

With the motivation to address the conventional tradition of patriarchal society, and re-address the stereotype females inhabiting these tales, feminist writers set upon revealing the underlying sub-context of these tales, presenting them with more adult-suited themes. Anne Sexton's Transformation is a pioneering revision of Grimm's fairy tales in which the poet does not only satirize the patriarchal society she grew up in, but she also rejects the female stereotype that her upbringing intended her to be. In the following paper, the feminist messages which Sexton's fairy tales intended to deliver are examined to reveal the poet's position concerning feminism and her relationship with female role-models and the male figures she presents in her fairy tales.
