Pinnawela elephant orphanage has existed since 1975 and has grown to become one of the most popular attractions of Sri Lanka. Before the arrival of the British in 1815 an estimated 30,000 elephants lived on the island. In the 1960s, the elephant population was close to extinction. This prompted the Sri Lankan government to found an orphanage for elephants that had lost their mothers or herds. Today, their number is around 3,000. Pinnawela, about 80 km northeast of Colombo, is regarded as the biggest herd of captive elephants in the world. Among the elephants is one that lost a foot when it stepped on a mine. Another is blind and is totally reliant on humans. The elephant herd in Pinnawela makes the journey to the river twice a day to bathe under the eyes of the tourists. For a few Sri Lankan rupees they are allowed to touch the animals. The sound of cameras clicking increases everytime one of the young elephant babies splashes about in the water. But anyone who wants to take a picture of the babies feeding in the orphanage has to pay extra for the privilege. Some 110 people are employed to care for the herd feeding them with leaves from palm trees. About 14,000 kg of food are needed every day. The Pinnawela elephant orphanage is financed by the government and by charging visitors to see the animals. EVE CALTURAL DANCE SHOW AND TEMPLE OF TOOTH TEMPLE OF TOOTH According to legend, the tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD, hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali who fled the Hindu armies besieging her fathers kingdom in India. Day 4 Dunuwila After Breakfast excursion to “Dunuwila” (place where Ravana was dead), “Laggala” (Ravana prayed to Lord Shankar) The cartels behind the “Dunuvila Lake” are called “Laggala”. “Laggala” is derived form the Sinhala term ‘Elakke Gala’, which when translated into English gives us the meaning “Target Rock”. Laggala served as a sentry point to the King Ravanas army and it was from this rock the first Glimpse of Lord Ramas army was sighted and informed to King Ravana. This hill is geographically the highest part of the northern region of King Ravanas city and on a clear day the north East Side that is ‘Thiru Koneshwaran’ and North West side that is ‘Talai Mannar’ could be seen even today. King Ravana is believed to have done meditation on this rock and prayed Lord Shiva at Thiru Koneshwaran from this point. It is here that King Ravana was killed by Lord Rama’s Brahmaastharam. The top of Laggala is flat and is believed to have been hit by the Brahmaastharam. Yahangala (Ravana Body was kept for the country men after his death) Yahangala - This is situated along the Mahiyanganaya Wasgamuwa Road. King Ravanas body after his death was kept upon this rock Yahangala meaning bedrock. His body was kept here for his countrymen to pay their last respects to their dear departed King. Geographically this rock is visible from miles away on its 3 sides. Weragantota (This is the place where Ravana’s Plane used to Land), Weragantota Lanka Pura (Capital city of King Ravana) Weragantota, mean’s a place of aircraft’s landing in Sinhala language, is believed to be the first place where Sitadevi was brought into Lanka in King Ravanas Vimana. These jungles are the place where the city of Lankapura once stood. The city had a beautiful palace for queen Mandothari surrounded by Waterfalls, Streams and varieties of Flora and Fauna. Sita Kotuwa (where Sita was kept first in Manodari’s Palace and then moved to Sita Kotuwa) - Sitadevi was kept in queen Mandothari’s palace until she was moved to ‘Sita Kotuwa’ and then on to “Ashoka Vatika”. The remains that are found are the remnants of later civilizations. Place is now called Sita Kotuwa which means ‘Sitas Fort’ and got its name because of Sita Devi’s stay here Gurulupotha Aircraft Repairing Centre Gurulupotha – Lankapura There was an aircraft repair center in the capital city. This place is known as ‘Gurulupotha’. In Valmikis depiction King Ravanas Vimana resembled a huge peacock. The Vimana in Sinhala language means “Dhandu Monara” which is known as ‘Flying peacock’, and hence the name Gurulupotha, which means ‘Parts of Birds’. Day 5 Nuwara Eliya After Breakfast leave for “Nuwara Eliya”. Visit “Bhakta Hanuman Temple”. Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda – On these hills of Ramboda where Hanuman was searching for Sitadevi, the Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka built a temple with Hanuman as the presiding deity. On every full moon day special pooja are conducted and witnessed by thousands of devotees. LABUKELLA ESTATE Manikattutheru - This is a rock in the Labukella Estate. After Lord Hanuman met Sita Devi, he set out to announce this happy information to Lord Rama. On the way, he rested on a hill top and was Re-arrested there. The hill where Lord Hanuman is believed to have rested after meeting Sita Devi is known as “Mani Kattuther”.
