He offered to carry her back but she refused saying it would be an insult to Rama’s honor if he did so. Part of this majestic garden still exists. Day 4 Dunuwila After Breakfast excursion to “Dunuwila” (place where Ravana was dead), “Laggala” (Ravana prayed to Lord Shankar) The cartels behind the “Dunuvila Lake” are called “Laggala”. “Laggala” is derived form the Sinhala term ‘Elakke Gala’, which when translated into English gives us the meaning “Target Rock”. Laggala served as a sentry point to the King Ravanas army and it was from this rock the first Glimpse of Lord Ramas army was sighted and informed to King Ravana. This hill is geographically the highest part of the northern region of King Ravanas city and on a clear day the north East Side that is ‘Thiru Koneshwaran’ and North West side that is ‘Talai Mannar’ could be seen even today. King Ravana is believed to have done meditation on this rock and prayed Lord Shiva at Thiru Koneshwaran from this point. It is here that King Ravana was killed by Lord Rama’s Brahmaastharam. The top of Laggala is flat and is believed to have been hit by the Brahmaastharam. Yahangala (Ravana Body was kept for the country men after his death) Yahangala - This is situated along the Mahiyanganaya Wasgamuwa Road. King Ravanas body after his death was kept upon this rock Yahangala meaning bedrock. His body was kept here for his countrymen to pay their last respects to their dear departed King. Geographically this rock is visible from miles away on its 3 sides. Weragantota (This is the place where Ravana’s Plane used to Land), Weragantota Lanka Pura (Capital city of King Ravana) Weragantota, mean’s a place of aircraft’s landing in Sinhala language, is believed to be the first place where Sitadevi was brought into Lanka in King Ravanas Vimana. These jungles are the place where the city of Lankapura once stood. The city had a beautiful palace for queen Mandothari surrounded by Waterfalls, Streams and varieties of Flora and Fauna. Sita Kotuwa (where Sita was kept first in Manodari’s Palace and then moved to Sita Kotuwa) - Sitadevi was kept in queen Mandothari’s palace until she was moved to ‘Sita Kotuwa’ and then on to “Ashoka Vatika”. The remains that are found are the remnants of later civilizations. Place is now called Sita Kotuwa which means ‘Sitas Fort’ and got its name because of Sita Devi’s stay here Gurulupotha Aircraft Repairing Centre Gurulupotha – Lankapura There was an aircraft repair center in the capital city. This place is known as ‘Gurulupotha’. In Valmikis depiction King Ravanas Vimana resembled a huge peacock. The Vimana in Sinhala language means “Dhandu Monara” which is known as ‘Flying peacock’, and hence the name Gurulupotha, which means ‘Parts of Birds’.

Day 5 Nuwara Eliya After Breakfast leave for “Nuwara Eliya”. Visit “Bhakta Hanuman Temple”. Sri Baktha Hanuman Temple, Ramboda – On these hills of Ramboda where Hanuman was searching for Sitadevi, the Chinmaya mission of Sri Lanka built a temple with Hanuman as the presiding deity. On every full moon day special pooja are conducted and witnessed by thousands of devotees. LABUKELLA ESTATE Manikattutheru - This is a rock in the Labukella Estate. After Lord Hanuman met Sita Devi, he set out to announce this happy information to Lord Rama. On the way, he rested on a hill top and was Re- arrested there. The hill where Lord Hanuman is believed to have rested after meeting Sita Devi is known as “Mani Kattuther”. GAYATRI PEEDAM IN NUWARA . Gayathri Pedam - It is believed to be the place from where King Ravana’s son Meghanath propitiated Lord Shiva with penance and pooja and in turn was granted super natural powers by lord Shiva.

Day 6 Bandarawela After Breakfast, leave for Bandarawela to visit Sita Amman Temple. The Sita Amman Temple can be seen on route to Hakgala along the Nuwara Eliya Badulla Road. The prominent temple architecture will not fail to attract your attention on the way to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens from Nuwara Eliya. According to tradition, the site is associated with Sita of the Ramayana epic. Ancient statues of Rama and Sita can be seen on a side of the temple. The temple seen today is a modern building with its paintings, statues and pillars decorated with sculptures, all depicting the tale of Rama and Sita. The rear of the temple overlooks a stream, while from its front can be seen the Hakgala peaks. On completion visit the Hakgala Gardens Hakgala Garden - The Hakgala Botanical Garden was one of the pleasure gardens of King Ravana of the well-known epic Ramayanaya. This garden was expanded during the British period and has a wide variety of flowers including an excellent collection of orchids. This is the exotic pleasure garden where king Ravana kept the depressed Sita, insisting that she marry him. It was here where the heart- warming meeting took place between her and Hanuman, who brought her Rama’s ring with the news that Rama was looking for her. He offered to carry her back but she refused saying it would be an insult to Rama’s honor if he did so. Part of this majestic garden still exists. It is also said that Hanuman nearly destroyed it in order to prove to Ravana of the forces against him. Thereafter proceed to Welimada and visit Divurumpola Temple. Although this ‘Vihara’ is said to be established in the 6th A.D. Polonnaruwa period it has a long history among people of having been started in the time of Rama, Rawana and Sita. Still revered by thousands, this holy haven was the place where Sita performed her Agni Pariksha (proving her chastity) to her husband Rama. Continuing the practice for over thousands of years, villagers still pledge their fidelity or take oaths there and even in certain courts, this agreement was binding. Since that time this place has been respected and worshiped by people down the ages. Furthermore it is said that this place was given the name “Divurumpola” or the place of making a wow. Not only in legends but this name has been inscribed in the moonstone guarding the Devale in the premises. Thereafter proceed to Bandarawela. In the afternoon, visit Ella - Ella, a small mountain near Bandarawela, boasts three locations linked to the Ramayana where, local legend dictates, Ravana hid Sita. First there is Ravana Ella Cave, situated in the massive Ella Rock. Then there is Ravana Ella Falls and a nearby pool bored out of the rock by the gushing waters where Sita is said to have bathed. Ravana Ella Falls – A breathtaking waterfall, 1080 feet high (cascades into several falls) close to the road from Ella to Wellawaya about 6 Km south from Ella. The stream, a tributary of Kirindi Oya plunges with a foaming spray over a series of ledges into the valley close to a bend in the road. The waters rise from Wewatenna highland above the rocks. In general the rocky underground of the waterfalls in Sri Lanka consists of hard gneiss or granite, but here the material is ‘Khondalite’, a kind of limestone which undergoes decay faster. This has resulted in many caves being formed near the falls. King Ravana of Ramayana legend is said to have lived in one of the caves above the waterfalls. The Bandarawela hotel is a charming heritage hotel built during the colonial period. The elegant hotel, whose illustrious life began as a European’s – only tea planters club.
