Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. Types of plants change with the various habitats, such as the open woodlands along the Painted Desert Rim and mesa tops with juniper, crispleaf buckwheat, and cliffroses while grasses like needle and thread and sideoats grama dominate the open prairie. AN ANNOTATED VASCULAR FLORA AND FLORISTIC ANALYSIS OF THE SOUTHERN HALF OF THE NATURE CONSERVANCY DAVIS MOUNTAINS PRESERVE, JEFF DAVIS COUNTY, TEXAS, U.S.A. [email protected] ABSTRACT The Nature Conservancy Davis Mountains Preserve (DMP) is located 24.9 mi (40 km) northwest of Fort Davis, Texas, in the northeastern region of the Chihuahuan Desert and consists of some of the most complex topography of the Davis Mountains, including their summit, Mount Livermore, at 8378 ft (2554 m). The cool, temperate, “sky island” ecosystem caters to the requirements that are needed to accommo- date a wide range of unique diversity, endemism, and vegetation patterns, including desert grasslands and montane savannahs. The current study began in May of 2011 and aimed to catalogue the entire vascular flora of the 18,360 acres of Nature Conservancy property south of Highway 118 and directly surrounding Mount Livermore. Previous botanical investigations are presented, as well as biogeographic relation- ships of the flora. The numbers from herbaria searches and from the recent field collections combine to a total of 2,153 voucher specimens, representing 483 species and infraspecies, 288 genera, and 87 families. The best-represented families are Asteraceae (89 species, 18.4% of the total flora), Poaceae (76 species, 15.7% of the total flora), and Fabaceae (21 species, 4.3% of the total flora). The current study represents a 25.44% increase in vouchered specimens and a 9.7% increase in known species from the study area’s 18,360 acres and describes four en- demic and fourteen non-native species (four invasive) on the property. -

The Marble Canyon milk-vetch Astragalus cremnophylax var. hevronii A 10-year Monitoring Update Redwall Site, Coconino County, AZ Daniela Roth Navajo Natural Heritage Program P.O. Box 1480 Window Rock AZ 86515 INTRODUCTION The Marble Canyon milk-vetch (Astragalus cremnophylax var. hevronii) is one of three varieties of Astragalus cremnophylax, all three of which are extremely rare local endemics to the Grand Canyon area of northern Arizona. The Sentry milk-vetch, Astragalus cremnophylax var. cremnophylax, was Listed Endangered in 1990, primarily due to severe threats to known populations through trampling by park visitors of plants and habitat along the south rim of the Grand Canyon. The Cliff milk-vetch, A. cremnophylax var. myriorrhapis, is only known from the Buckskin Mountains, on the Arizona/Utah border, where it is managed both by the U.S. Forest Service and the BLM. A population of A. cremnophylax var. cremnophylax from the north rim of the Grand Canyon has shown to be genetically different from the south rim populations as well as the other varieties and may be described as a new species (Allphin et al. 2005). All three varieties are narrow endemics and are vulnerable to extinction due to their habitat specificity, limited habitat availability, low fecundity levels and the overall small number of plants in existence. The Redwall population of A. cremnophylax var. hevronii was first discovered by Bill Hevron, former botanist with the Navajo Natural Heritage Program, in 1991 and described by Rupert Barneby of the New York Botanical Garden in 1992. In 1997 the Grand Canyon National Park received a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to set up monitoring plots for all three varieties of A. -

Cockerell casually suggested that he and Townsend exchange positions. Amazingly Townsend agreed. Cockerell spent the years from 1893 to 1900 at Mesilla Park (now Las Cruces) NM. He then spent three years at New Mexico Normal University in Las Vegas NM before moving to Colorado, where he spent the rest of his career.
