Stage 1a - Under the Aqueduct Chirk Main Car Park to Pont Faen Distance 1.5 km. Height gain 20 metres (65 ft). Time 30 mins. Leave the main Chirk car park through the ‘No Exit’ way, turning left on to the main street. Continue past the church and begin to go down the hill. About 70 meters after leaving the last building in town, cross the stile on your left. Follow the grassy track to the right downhill, then bear left towards the old mill building. Cross the footbridge over the old mill race, go over the stile and keep ahead to a metal gate. Go through a gap left of the gate and carefully cross the road and through the kissing gate opposite. Continue down the track and follow the river bank, passing under the massive aqueduct and viaduct. Keep to the river bank on your left until you get to a stone bridge. Pass through the kissing gate to the right and onto Pont Faen (stone bridge). Cross the bridge into England! OR Stage 1b - Castle Woods Chirk Train Station to Pont Faen Distance 1 km. Height Gain negligible. Time 15 mins. Leaving the station, turn R, crossing the railway bridge and canal tunnel, ahead for 5 mins. to the impressive castle gates. Turn left onto the tarmac drive. Where the drive bends left into the caravan park, keep ahead. At a T-junction go right, downhill through woodland. Emerge onto the road, go right for 100 metres, then left onto an old stone bridge, ‘Pont Faen’. Cross the bridge into England! OR Stage 1c - Glan Wylfa Car Park to Pont Faen Distance 750 metres. -

Level crossing accident at Penrhyn, Ffestiniog Railway, 6 January 2019 Important safety messages • This accident serves as a reminder of why it is important to follow railway rules and operating instructions. Many rules have developed from the experience of past accidents and incidents. The reason why a rule exists is not always obvious, and may have been forgotten as time passes, but the importance of complying with it does not diminish. • The consequences of a train running onto a level crossing into the path of a road vehicle can be fatal; ensuring trains stop at a ‘Stop’ board placed at a safe distance from a level crossing open to road traffic is a sensible and realistic precaution against inadvertent overruns. • It is also important that organisations have measures in place to assure themselves that rules and instructions are being followed, rather than allowing unsafe ‘custom and practice’ to develop. Summary of the accident On Sunday 6 January 2019 at around 16:30 hrs, an engineering train returning from Tan y Bwlch to Minffordd did not stop as it approached the level crossing at Penrhyn. The gates were closed across the railway, and the train struck the upper gate and pushed through it, coming to a stand part way across the crossing, fouling both carriageways of the road, the A4085. There were no injuries, and minor damage was caused to the crossing gates on the Tan y Bwlch side of the crossing. On applying the locomotive brakes with the intention of stopping short of the gate, the driver realised that the locomotive wheels had locked and that the train was continuing to move down the 1 in 80 gradient. -

When, ten days ago, the first copy of the " Evolution of the Steam Locomotive" was ready for sale, I did not expect to be called upon to write a preface for a new edition before 240 hours had expired. The author cannot but be gratified to know that the whole of the extremely large first edition was exhausted practically upon publication, and since many would-be readers are still unsupplied, the demand for another edition is pressing. Under these circumstances but slight modifications have been made in the original text, although additional particulars and illustrations have been inserted in the new edition. The new matter relates to the locomotives of the North Staffordshire, London., Tilbury, and Southend, Great Western, and London and North Western Railways. Gwynn Jones) SIDELINES 143 FEBRUARY 2016 WOLVERHAMPTON LOW LEVEL STATION COMES BACK TO LIFE FOR HRA AWARDS NIGHT. The Grand Station banqueting centre, once the GWR’s most northerly broad gauge station, came back to life as a busy passenger station when it hosted the Heritage Railway Association 2015 Awards Night. The HRA Awards recognise a wide range of achievements and distinctions across the entire heritage railway industry, and the awards acknowledge individuals and institutions as well as railways. The February 6th event saw the presentation of awards in eight categories. The National Railway Museum and York Theatre Royal won the Morton’s Media (Heritage Railways) Interpretation Award, for an innovative collaboration that joined theatre with live heritage steam, when the Museum acted as a temporary home for the theatre company. The Railway Magazine Annual Award for Services to Railway Preservation was won by David Woodhouse, MBE, in recognition of his remarkable 60-year heritage railways career, which began as a volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, and took him to senior roles across the heritage railways and tourism industry. The North Yorkshire Moors Railway won the Morton’s Media (Rail Express) Modern Traction Award, for their diesel locomotive operation, which included 160 days working for their Crompton Class 25. There were two winners of the Steam Railway Magazine Award. The Great Little Trains of North Wales was the name used by the judges to describe the Bala Lake Railway, Corris Railway, Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, Talyllyn Railway, Vale of Rheidol Railway and the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway. -

The first three volume indexes were produced on typewriters, though subsequent issues were produced by computers, and happily digital files had been preserved for these apart from one section of one index. It has therefore been necessary to create digital versions of 3 original indexes using “Optical Character Recognition” (OCR), which has not proved easy due to the relatively poor print, and extremely small text (font) size, of some of the indexes in particular. Thus the OCR results have required extensive proof-reading. Very fortunately, a team of volunteers to assist in the project was recruited from the membership of the Society, and grateful thanks are undoubtedly due to the major players in this exercise – Paul Burkhalter, John Hill, John Hutchings, Frank Jux, John Maddox and Robin Simmonds – with a special thankyou to Russell Wear, current Editor of "IL" and Chairman of the Society, who has both helped and given encouragement to the project in a myraid of different ways. None of this would have been possible but for the efforts of those who compiled the original individual indexes – Frank Jux, Ian Lloyd, (the late) James Lowe, John Scotford, and John Wood – and to the volume index print preparers such as Roger Hateley, who set a new level of presentation which is standing the test of time. -
Modeling China's — and Now Iowa's — Mighty QJ 2-10-2'S
February 2007, Volume 75, Number 9 Modeling China’s — and now Iowa’s — mighty QJ 2-10-2’s After being replaced by diesels in their home country of China, a few of these modern, heavy-duty steamers have found their way to the American Heartland / Robert D. Turner ntil the end of 2005 one last place remained on Earth where big steam locomotives in substantial numbers were running in regular freight and passenger service on a year- round basis. That place was northern China, and in particular the autonomous region U of Inner Mongolia, to the northwest of Beijing. There, on the JiTong Railway, (often written Ji-tong) a stable of rugged 2-10-2’s—coal-fired and fire breathing—were still racking up ton- miles every day in an uncompromising display of first-class railroading. These impressive machines were China’s QJ class locomotives. QJ is short for Qian Jin, or “Advancing.” It comes from the Chinese revolutionary slogan, “revolution is the locomotive pushing human history forward.” Revolutionary rhetoric aside, which I am sure loses something in the translation, it is fair to say that in years to come the QJ will be remembered as one of the most interesting and important types of steam locomotives developed in the 20th century. In fact, two now reside in North America, having been imported by Railroad Development Corporation in June of 2006. They were moved to the Iowa Interstate Railroad soon after their arrival and were operated on its rails over the weekend of September 14-17, 2006. I met my first QJ early in 2001 on China Rail just before they were retired, and then began to explore the JiTong Railway, where QJ’s were in abundance. -
