    4 Krohn Chapter 1 The Society for the Furtherance of the Critical Philosophy (SFCP): A Foundation of German Female Refugees and their British Comrades in 1940 Dieter Krohn* The history of the SFCP is part of the history of an educational and political movement that originated with the Göttingen philosopher Leonard Nelson and took a foothold in Britain in the late twenties/early thirties. This article describes how the British mem- bers of this movement helped their German comrades when they had to take refuge from the Nazis, whom they had fought as long as possible. This includes especially the fate of the movement´s experimental school that first fled to Denmark and then to Britain. There is a very simple story behind the founding of Charity No. 313712 which is registered with the Charity Commission of England and Wales and carries the somewhat cumbersome name The Society for the Furtherance of the Critical Philosophy [SFCP].1 And there is a much more complex story behind the sim- ple story that sheds light on a specific immigrant group before and during the Second World War in Britain and on the support and cooperation they received from their personal and political friends in their host country. The short and simple answer first: Children needed help. A group of chil- dren aged four to fourteen who had to flee from the Nazis, first from Germany to Denmark, then from Denmark to Britain, accompanied by their teachers Minna Specht and Gustav Heckmann, Charlotte Sonntag and Liselotte Wettig needed shelter and protection.2 In retrospect Minna Specht wrote: * I gratefully acknowledge the support given by the trustees of the Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy which enabled me to do thorough research in the archives in Berlin, Bonn, London, Swansea and Warwick.

    4 England An Eyewitness Report SUSANNE MILLER Born in 1915 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Susanne Miller was raised in Vienna. In 1935 Miller emigrated to England, where she worked with the Internationaler Sozialistischer Kampf- bund (ISK) and the British Labour Party. After World War II, she went to Germany with her future husband, Willi Eichler. In 1952 she began working for the National Execu- tive Committee of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). She headed the SPD's Historical Commission from its establishment in 1982 until 1990. Miller received her Ph.D. in history in 1963. She subsequently joined the Commission for the History of Parliamentari- anism and Political Parties. Together with Heinrich Potthoff, she wrote A History of Ger- man Social Democracy from 1848 to the Present (1982). She has published widely in the field of German and Austrian labor and political history. This report was written in 1991. Perception is determined not only by its object but also by its subject, by the person who perceives, experiences, judges, and remembers his or her observations, impressions, and feelings. I think, therefore, that I should first introduce this person - myself. I wish to state from the outset that my biography, my motives, and my experiences cannot be regarded as typical for women emigres in England. I was brought up in Vienna in a rather well-to-do and conservative family of Jewish descent but was christened as a small child and learned practically nothing about the Jewish religion. Born in 1915, I went to the University of Vienna in 1932 to study history, English, and philosophy.

    Britain and the Occupation of Germany, 1945-49 Daniel Luke Cowling Wolfson College, University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June, 2018 Britain and the Occupation of Germany, 1945-49 Daniel Cowling The Allied Occupation of Germany, 1945-49, was intended to transform the war-torn Third Reich into a peaceable nation through a series of far-reaching political, economic, and social reforms. But amid the growing tensions Between East and West these radical plans would Be significantly altered, culminating in the formation of two German states in 1949. Historians have tended to view the occupation as a Backdrop to the nascent Cold War or a transitional period in the history of modern Germany. Yet this thesis suggests that British participation in the Allied occupation was, in fact, much more than simply an exercise in political pragmatism or a contriBution to the reBuilding of war-torn Europe. Rather, this undertaking catalysed Britain’s political and puBlic confrontation with Nazism, laying some of the most significant and durable foundations of the postwar Anglo-German relationship. This research utilises contemporary mass media sources and official records to explore British images and perceptions of Germany under occupation, scrutinising the interactions of decision-makers, the media, and the puBlic.
