01-00-00 6/32 Network Control Rhein-Main-Ost/Mittelhessen 1 Executive Summary 1.1 ITS Deployment status The network control system Rhein-Main-Ost/Mittelhessen is in operation since 31 st October 2014. 1.2 Impact on Traffic Flow Hessen is with the Frankfurt Rhine-Main metropolitan area a key hub for long-distance-traffic, including the North-South-relation covered by the URSA MAJOR (UM) Corridor. Additionally, two of the three major links cross Hessen and major decision points within the corridor are located in Hessen (Frankfurter Kreuz, Wiesbadener Kreuz, Mönchhof-Dreieck, Seligenstädter Dreieck, Darmstädter Kreuz, Gambacher Kreuz, Hanauer Kreuz, Langenselbolder Dreieck). The completion of the variable message signs (VMS) telematics infrastructure at the decision points improves the conditions for better traffic flow and driver guidance. The advantages of these measures are following listed: traffic relief of incident areas in the network meshes by rerouting to alternative routes utilisation of free capacity of the road network split of traffic volume to different routes harmonisation of the degree of capacity utilisation within the road network relief of roadwork areas 1.3 Impact on Safety The mentioned impacts on traffic flow (less congestion, harmonised traffic) improves the road safety, especially of rear-end collisions. 1.4 Impact on Environment The mentioned impacts on traffic flow result in a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
