“Now I’m going to tell you about the Turtle and Echidna... one of the first stories I learnt when I was a young boy.” Tyrone Garnarradj, age 24, has the group of Kakadu visitors hanging off his every word. The Njanjma Rangers have only been guiding tourists around the Ubirr Rock art site for a few weeks and are performing like seasoned veterans. Head guide, Manbiyarra Nayinggul adds another angle to the story whenever Tyrone draws breath, and even Tyrone’s younger brother Bernard puts in his two bob’s worth as the dreamtime legend reached its climax. The Fragile First Impressions exhibition was hosted by Trinity Grammar School from 28 May until 3 June. The photographs were created over the past year by NT photojournalist David Hancock in a collaboration with the Indigenous Landowners of the Warddeken Indigenous Protected Area in Western Arnhem Land. The cave paintings are believed to cover a period from the mid-19th century through to around World War II . They represent a remarkable archive of indigenous reportage, by Aboriginal people who told family of their travels to the frontier, where Warddeken Director Terah Guymala and Warddeken founder and former some worked in tin mines and buffalo camps before returning to the Chief Executive Peter Cooke at the Fragile First Impressions photography exhibition in Melbourne on May 27. West Arnhem Regional Council Community Services Manager Kupa Teao went along to take some photos on the night. “Sorry, not all the pics were clear, it was difficult trying to take pics and dance at the same time,” Kupa explained. Annie also has a three-day camp planned for the kids during the schools holidays.
