FROM CRADLE TO GRAVE? The Place of the Aircraft Carrier in Australia's post-war Defence Force Subthesis submitted for the degree of MASTER OF DEFENCE STUDIES at the University College The University of New South Wales Australian Defence Force Academy 1996 by ALLAN DU TOIT ACADEMY LIBRARy UNSW AT ADFA 437104 HMAS Melbourne, 1973. Trackers are parked to port and Skyhawks to starboard Declaration by Candidate I hereby declare that this submission is my own work and that, to the best of my knowledge and belief, it contains no material previously published or written by another person nor material which to a substantial extent has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma of a university or other institute of higher learning, except where due acknowledgment is made in the text of the thesis. Allan du Toit Canberra, October 1996 Ill Abstract This subthesis sets out to study the place of the aircraft carrier in Australia's post-war defence force. Few changes in naval warfare have been as all embracing as the role played by the aircraft carrier, which is, without doubt, the most impressive, and at the same time the most controversial, manifestation of sea power. From 1948 until 1983 the aircraft carrier formed a significant component of the Australian Defence Force and the place of an aircraft carrier in defence strategy and the force structure seemed relatively secure. Although cost, especially in comparison to, and in competition with, other major defence projects, was probably the major issue in the demise of the aircraft carrier and an organic fixed-wing naval air capability in the Australian Defence Force, cost alone can obscure the ftindamental reordering of Australia's defence posture and strategic thinking, which significantly contributed to the decision not to replace HMAS Melbourne.

Stöhs: Into the Abyss?: European Naval Power in the Post–Cold War Era INTO THE ABYSS? European Naval Power in the Post–Cold War Era Jeremy Stöhs ince the end of the Cold War, European sea power—particularly its naval element—has undergone drastic change1 The dissolution of the Soviet Union Snot only heralded a period of Western unilateralism but also put an end to previ- ous levels of military investment In fact, once the perceived threat that Soviet forces posed had disappeared, many Western governments believed that the era of great-power rivalry and major-power wars finally had come to an end2 Rather than necessitating preparation for war, the security environment now ostensibly allowed states to allocate their funds to other areas, such as housing, education, and health

The question of how to meet our military obligations at home and abroad is necessarily answered from many viewpoints: tactical, technical, and financial. As the Navy faces serious cutbacks in its budget, the financial aspect increases in importance disproportionately over the other factors. Nevertheless, in an attempt to maximize the dollar without sacrificing efficiency, a review of alternative systems is now needed.

  • Design and Development History of the Canadair Cl-84 V/Stol Tilt-Wing Aircraft
DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT HISTORY OF THE CANADAIR CL-84 V/STOL TILT-WING AIRCRAFT Introduction Throughout time man raised his head to the heavens while watching the seemingly effortless flight of birds and insects, and dreamed of achieving the full range of flight: to rise upwards, soar, hover and land safely on fixed wings. At the dawn of the 20th century twelve seconds that changed the world occurred with the first powered flight of a fixed wing airplane, and man began to achieve much of his dream. Some preferred the prospect of using rotary wings to explore the skies, exploiting a unique ability that fixed wing aircraft could not attain, with Leonardo da Vinci having the forethought of producing the first conceptual drawings of a helicopter more than 400 years ago. Engine manufacturers were soon working hand in hand with the early aircraft manufacturers in an effort to appease both schools of thought regarding how best to accomplish powered flight reliably and economically in all regimes. The development of high power-to-weight ratio gas turbine engines made possible the design of a new family of convertiplane aircraft combining the speed, range and efficiency of the fixed-wing airplane, with the vertical take-off and landing, and slow-flight capabilities of the helicopter. Canadair Limited in Montreal, Quebec, was formerly the Aircraft Division of Canadian Vickers Limited from the early 1920s until the Aircraft Division was officially reorganized by the Canadian Government as a Crown-owned corporation on 3 October 1944. Due to space constraints at Vickers, this Division was relocated to the nearby Cartierville Airport, the oldest airfield in Canada.
