Fish Assemblages Associated with Red Grouper Pits at Pulley Ridge, A

Dunne and B.E. Brown Introductory Description Anegada is a most unique island from many aspects. Northernmost of the American and British Virgin Islands and easternmost of the Greater Antilles, it is a flat limestone island, 17 km long and 4 km wide with a total area of about 14.94 square miles (9,567 acres 54 sq km), It is set aside from the other British Virgin Islands, being some 19 km from Virgin Gorda, its closest neighbour. It lies in distinct contrast to the volcanic and mountainous landscapes of the Virgin Group, with a maximum elevation of only 8 metres, To the north and east (windward side) the island is edged by extensive reefs beyond which stretches the Atlantic Ocean. On the leeward side, a shallow sea (2 to 8 m) separates Anegada from the main Virgin Island Group. His tory Schmburgk (1832) is the earliest authority on the island, having visited it in 1831 when he completed a most extensive survey. He writes: 'Of its history little is known; there is no likelihood that it was settled early. Ere Labat, the only early writer who speaks of the Lesser West India islands, observes, that aborigines used it as an occasional rendezvous, where they procured great quantities of conchs (~trombusgigas); and large piles of these shells are still to be seen at the east end of the island, but nowhere else ; which seems to prove decidedly that it was not permanently accupied, but merely resorted to from time to time. -

Fish Census Data Generated by Non-experts In the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary CHRISTY V. PATTENGILL-SEMMENS AND BRICE X. SEMMENS Using non-experts in monitoring programs increases the data available for use in resource management. Both scientists and resource managers have expressed concerns about the value and accuracy of non-expert data. We examined the quality of fish census data generated by Reef Environmental Education Foundation (REEF) volunteers of varying experience levels (non-experts), and compared these data to data generated by experts. Analyses were done using data from three REEF field survey cruises conducted in the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). Species composition and structure were comparable between the skill levels. Non-expert datasets were similar to expert datasets, although expert data were more statistically powerful when the amount of data collected was equivalent between skill levels. The amount of REEF survey experience was positively correlated with the power of the data collected. The statistical power of abundance estimates varied between species. These results provide support for use of non- expert data by resource managers and scientists to supplement and enhance monitoring programs. Quantitative benthic monitoring has been conducted at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) for over 20 years (Viada, 1996). In 1994, a fish assemblage monitoring program was initiated (Pattengill, 1998). Field survey time for this project was often shared with a volunteer-based monitoring program. Participating volunteers were trained in reef fish identification, and accompanied teams of experts in fish identification on several survey cruises. This paper examines the utility of the data collected by the volunteer surveyors for use by the FGBNMS. -

Though there are no commercial fisheries to-date in the archipelago, however recreational fishing pressure has increased considerably with the growing population over the past decade. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were established in 1986, with the main objectives of protecting coral reefs and their associated organisms (including fish communities), restoring fish stocks, and replenishment of fish to surrounding areas. In this study, important fish species of reef health status and species most commonly targeted by fishers have been compared between protected areas and non-protected fished areas. A fish census was carried out by Underwater Visual Census (UVC) around Grand Cayman during the months of January through to April 2009. For 53 target species, biomass, size and density were investigated for comparison between MPA and non-MPA. In addition, the occurrence of “rare species” (abundance < 1% of the total number of fish), the relationship between the different trophic groups were explored. Furthermore, the exportation of individuals by spillover effects were measured over a 5 km distance from each boundary using linear regression of the mean biomass per site. -
