Jack Which Vernacular Revival? Burns and the Makars When I was introduced to Bums at university, he was properly described as the senior member of a poetic trinity. With Ramsay and Fergusson, we were told, he initiated something called "The Vernacular Revival." That is, in the eighteenth century these poets revived poetic use of Scots ("THE vernacular") after a seventeenth century of treacherous anglicization caused by James VI and the Union of the Crowns. Sadly, as over a hundred years had elapsed, this worthy rescue effort might resuscitate but could never restore the national lan guage to the versatility in fullness of Middle Scots. This pattern and these words-national language, treachery, etc.-still dominate Scottish literary history. They are based on modem assumptions about language use within the United Kingdom. To see Bums's revival of the Scots vernacular in primarily political terms conveniently makes him anticipate the linguistic position of that self-confessed twentieth-century Anglophobe, C. -

HAMMOND Ethnicity and the Writing of Medieval Scottish history1 ABSTRACT Historians have long tended to define medieval Scottish society in terms of interactions between ethnic groups. This approach was developed over the course of the long nineteenth century, a formative period for the study of medieval Scotland. At that time, many scholars based their analysis upon scientific principles, long since debunked, which held that medieval ‘peoples’ could only be understood in terms of ‘full ethnic packages’. This approach was combined with a positivist historical narrative that defined Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Normans as the harbingers of advances in Civilisation. While the prejudices of that era have largely faded away, the modern discipline still relies all too often on a dualistic ethnic framework. This is particularly evident in a structure of periodisation that draws a clear line between the ‘Celtic’ eleventh century and the ‘Norman’ twelfth. Furthermore, dualistic oppositions based on ethnicity continue, particu- larly in discussions of law, kingship, lordship and religion. Geoffrey Barrow’s Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, first published in 1965 and now available in the fourth edition, is proba- bly the most widely read book ever written by a professional historian on the Middle Ages in Scotland.2 In seeking to introduce the thirteenth century to such a broad audience, Barrow depicted Alexander III’s Scot- land as fundamentally -

Wilson Barbour's Bruce and Haryls Wallace: Complements, Compensations and Conventions In 1488 and 1489, John Ramsay co~ied Hary's Wallace and John Bar bour's Brnce into a pair of manuscripts. John Jamieson edited them as a pair in 1820.2 Before and after Jamieson, other readers felt a similar in clination to place the two poems side by side.3 This impulse is natural, for the Brnce and the Wallace are alike in several basic ways. THE PRINTED RECORD OF AN ORAL TRADITION: ANNA GORDON BROWN’S BALLADS Ruth Perry Traditional ballads—those sung narratives whose origins are uncertain and whose authorship is unknown—have been difficult for literary scholars to account for and to analyze. Anonymous folk songs, they have moved between oral tradition and printed versions in broadsides or chapbooks and back again over the course of many centuries. They rarely have a single definitive text but can be found in many variants, making textual analysis tricky. Most scholars who have studied ballads are either medievalists—when the ballads are thought to have originated—or eighteenth-century scholars—the century when ballads were first collected. Francis J. Child, Harvard’s first professor of vernacular literature in English, was both. He thought of ballads as our “earliest known poetry,” whose “historical and natural place is anterior to the appearance of the poetry of art”; and he collected as many of them as he could with all their rich variations in the late nineteenth century.1 Child’s collection was largely bibliographic: he gathered the texts of ballads for the most part without their melodies. -

THE PERFORMATIVE BYRON: THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND by LIRIM NEZIROSKI (Under the Direction of Nelson Hilton) ABSTRACT This dissertation presents a study of Lord Byron’s historical dramas (Marino Faliero, The Two Foscari, Sardanapalus, and Werner) alongside the performative aesthetics of Don Juan, and it uses performance theory as a hermeneutic for examining this relationship. It provides a literary analysis of some neglected works and important issues in Byron’s writings, it explores the legacy of Byron in the nineteenth-century theater, and it tests the limits of current scholarship on Romantic drama. The dissertation brings together a large amount of scholarship and provides a new perspective on Byron, Romantic drama, and the Victorian theater. England’s Populist Pindars H. J. Jackson he British Library recognizes thirty Pindars, the most productive of them being the poet of notorious lyric complexity whose works in Greek and in translation fill Talmost fifteen columns in the latest printed catalogue, with an additional seven columns or so of secondary studies. The other Pindars, all native English speakers and virtually all pseudonymous, occupy twenty-one columns. Of these only one, Peter Pindar, with twelve columns, comes close to matching his great role model in the public record, and his name is as obscure now as the real Pindar’s is illustrious. But this Peter Pindar (whom we can think of as Peter the Great to differentiate him from the others) was the forefather of several generations of little Peters, Pauls, Pollys and Peregrines, and the Pindar phenomenon deserves further study for all sorts of historical and cultural reasons. In real life Peter the Great was John Wolcot (1738-1819), a physician with literary and artistic interests. In 1782 his Lyric Odes to the Royal Academicians was an instant success; he had found his niche. For the next twenty years he kept up a steady flow of entertaining satires, mostly aimed at the King and the royal family, with digressive sorties against other well-known figures — James Boswell, Sir Joseph Banks, Tom Paine, Hannah More. The authorship of these works was an open secret. In the golden age of English caricature that we now associate with figures like Gillray, Rowlandson and Cruikshank, Wolcot was a celebrity because, like them, he made comic capital of the news of the day.1 If his work is now practically lost to sight, it may be because although like theirs it was topical and immediately accessible at the time, unlike theirs it no longer appears to be worth the trouble of decoding. -

They include: 14 volumes of correspondence received by Lockhart as Editor of The Quarterly Review, 1825-1854 (NLS MSS.923-936); 3 volumes of letters from Lockhart to Whitwell Elwin, his successor as Editor (NLS MSS.145, 341 & 2262); 3 volumes of correspondence between Lockhart and Scott, 1818-1832 (NLS.MSS.142-143, & 859); 7 volumes of family letters, 1820-1854 (NLS.MSS.1552-1558); 1 volume of letters from Lockhart to Allan Cunningham about the Lives of British Painters (NLS.MS.820); and 10 volumes of literary manuscripts by Lockhart (NLS.MSS.1623-1626, 3995 & 4817-4822). The Editorial correspondence is especially rich and includes letters from Byron, Coleridge, Croker, Disraeli, Edgeworth (one entire volume and numerous other letters besides), Murray, Norton, Southey (“a willing and ready assistant in your new undertaking”), and Wordsworth.
