Photo: Supplied Sagaing Region farmers demand land back from factory About 300 farmers in Sagaing Region’s Htigyaing township protested a longstanding feud with a Chinese-backed nickel-processing plant on November 10, claiming that the factory confiscated their lands without proper compensation. The farmers have been protesting against the company since 2012, without result. The Tagaung Taung nickel mine signed a contract with China Nonferrous Metal Mining Co (CNMC) in Nay Pyi Taw in 2007. The project entailed the seizure of more than 3000 acres (1200 hectares) of land with crop compensation of K50,000 an acre payable to 122 farmers – including 17 who had registered their land – in five villages of Maung Kone village tract. This year, in September, farmers submitted their complaints to the Union and regional governments, and sent a letter to State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi with questions about job creation, land compensation, solid waste pollution, the dismissal of the factory boss, and issues around the transportation of coal from Maung Kone port. “The local authorities told us this was forest land. But before the Tagaung forest area was recognised, our ancestors farmed those lands,” Sagaing Region Farmers Association executive member U Nay Win told The Myanmar Times in September.

    NATIONAL TUBERCULOSIS PROGRAMME ANNUAL REPORT (2012) 1. Introduction Tuberculosis is an ancient illness. By all rights as a bacterial disease that is curable with antimicrobial drugs, it should belong to the past. However, according to the Global Tuberculosis (TB) Report (2013), approximately 8.6 million developed TB and 1.3 million people died of TB in 2012. These figures acknowledge that TB is a unique pandemic. A third of the world's population harbours latent TB infection, which can emerge at any time as an airborne and transmittable disease. Reducing this human reservoir of infection will require many years of steady and untiring effort, plus more effective tools than we have today. The goal of National Tuberculosis Programmes (NTP) is to dramatically reduce the global burden of tuberculosis by 2015 by ensuring all TB patients, including those co‐ infected with HIV and those with drug‐resistant TB, benefit from universal access to high‐ quality diagnosis and patient‐centered treatment. Despite the efforts of NTP with the support of government and partners, tuberculosis (TB) is still a major health problem in Myanmar. Of the 198 countries reported to World Health Organization concerning Tuberculosis Control, Myanmar is still included in 22 TB high burden countries, in 27 MDR‐TB high burden countries as well as in 41 TB/HIV high burden countries. For 2012, WHO estimated that TB prevalence in Myanmar was 489 per 100,000 population, incidence 377 per 100,000 population and mortality 48 per 100,000 population. NTP, Myanmar was established in 1966. NTP has been running with 14 Regional and State TB Centres with 101 TB teams at district and township levels since 2009.

Photo: Kyaw Ko Ko / The Myanmar Times Tagaung nickel factory workers demonstrate for a payrise Hundreds of Myanmar workers from a nickel factory in Sagaing Region staged a demonstration this past weekend over a perceived pay discrepancy between foreign and local employees. The protesting workers say they are demanding full benefits like workplace healthcare and social security, which their Chinese counterparts allegedly receive. But officials from the Chinese company operating the mine told The Myanmar Times last week that the dispute arose out of a misunderstanding. The Tagaung Taung Nickel Factory in Katha district’s Htigyaing township employs around 1600 Myanmar workers and about 400 Chinese migrant workers, the protesters said. Workers’ representative Ko Tin Myo Tun told The Myanmar Times that more than 500 Myanmar staffers are involved in the protest movement. He added that they don’t intend to stop until they have secured workplace conditions in line with international standards. “Salaries for foreigners and local workers at the factory are totally different right now. I want our salary to be increased to the appropriate amount,” he said. “The labour rights are lost. The healthcare [and safety standards] are still weak in the workplace. Social security cards have not been received yet.” Labourer U Tun Win said the protesting workers were wrongfully terminated from the factory for calling for protections guaranteed to them under the law.
