THE ULUWAHU PAENIMA PART I: SRI VISNU INVOCATION I beseech thee, O Resplendent Visnu, Lord of the Gods, who is also renown as Sankasila Deva Narayana,1 who is an aspirant to Buddhahood,2 who has protected Sri Lanka, the 2,000 islands, the four great continents of the world, the whole of the great Jambudvipa including its eighteen provinces, the great Buddhist church, the salt water circle of ocean that surrounds the land, and the four temples (devale) at the cardinal points. You who are descendant from Asuras and who dwell in the Vaikunta world3 and who ride the giant bird called Garuda. You who have become renown in this Kali age under such names as Lord Ada Visnu,4 Lord Mulu Visnu, Lord Demala Visnu, Lord Maha Visnu, Lord Sri Visnu and who have been manifest in the four Kali Ages in the ten incarnations5 including Rama (ramavatara)6 the Boar (vaerasara avatara), the Fish (mallawa avatara), Krisna (kirti avatara), the Tamil (demala avatara),7 the Gaja (tortoise) (gajavatara),8 the snake (naga avatara), the Buddha (bauddha avatara) and the 1The name of Visnu as reposing on the bed of the serpent between the creation and dissolution of the world. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT The two important temples at Munnesvaram, on the west coast of Sri Lanka, are Hindu and are run by Tamil priests. Their patronage is largely Sinhalese Buddhist. They are the context for an examination of the relations between Hinduism and Buddhism in modern Sri Lanka in a period of violent ethnic tension between Tamils and Sinhalese. The thesis falls in two parts. The first deals with the history of the temples in the colonial and post-colonial eras, the history of religious difference, and with a social analysis of the two groups of priests and of the worshippers. This establishes grounds for a consideration of current anthropological debates on hierarchy and on historicity. -

A Burmese tract on kingship: political theory in the 1782 manuscript of Manugye and 1 The eleven lists on kingship which we translate and discuss are taken from a manuscript of the Manugye dhammathat which was completed on 25 June 1782.We shall refer to it as B.1782. Manugye, the best known of the surviving Burmese dhammathats (law texts), was compiled in the 1750s during the reign of Alaungpaya (1752–60), the founder of the Konbaung dynasty (1752–1885). David Richardson's edition (Burmese text with English translation) was pub- lished in 1847, the year after his death: that ensured Manugye's popularity among non-Burmese speakers.We shall refer to Richardson's version as R.1847.One of the co-authors plans to publish a book-length study of the B.1782 manuscript.Meanwhile, we believe the material we present here to be of immediate interest both to historians of Burma and to anyone interested in Buddhist political science.It is the circumstances in which B.1782 was written that demand attention.In 1782 Badon (better known to historians as Bodawpaya) became the third of Alaungpaya's sons to ascend the Peacock throne.Badon's accession and the compilation of B.1782 can be plausibly linked.Perhaps we can think of B.1782 as a document compiled for the guidance of the new king.We might even think of it as summarizing what the Burmese people expected from their Burmese king—the late eighteenth century Burmese equivalent to a social contract or written constitution.This possibility— that B.1782 was compiled in order to instruct the new king in the duties of kingship—gives a special importance to the fresh material on kingship which it contains. -

The Literary Abhidhamma Text: Anuruddha's Manual of Defining Mind and Matter (Namarupapariccheda) and the Production of Pali Commentarial Literature in South India By Sean M. Goldman Professor Robert H. Sharf Fall 2020 ABSTRACT This dissertation is a study of the ancillary works of the well-known but little understood Pali commentator and Abhidhamma scholar, Anuruddha. Anuruddha's Manual of Defining Mind & Matter (namarupapariccheda) and Decisive Treatment of the Abhidhamma Ultimates (paramatthavinicchaya) are counted among the “sleeping texts” of the Pali commentarial tradition (texts not included in standard curricula, and therefore neglected). Anuruddha's well-studied synopsis of the subject matter of the commentarial-era Abhidhamma tradition, the Compendium of Topics of the Abhidhamma (abhidhammatthasangaha), widely known under its English title, A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma, came to be regarded as the classic handbook of the orthodox Theravadin Abhidhamma system. His lesser-known works, however, curiously fell into obscurity and came to be all but forgotten. In addition to shedding new and interesting light on the Compendium of Topics of the Abhidhamma (abhidhammatthasangaha), these overlooked works reveal another side of the famous author – one as invested in the poetry of his doctrinal expositions as in the terse, unembellished clarity for which he is better remembered. Anuruddha's poetic abhidhamma treatises provide us a glimpse of a little- known early strand of Mahavihara-affiliated commentarial literature infusing the exegetical project with creative and poetic vision. -

In recognising the ideologies of preservation that define the current Kōlam practice as traditional knowledge, which manifests in its rarity on the one hand, and its common usages in the urban economic context on the other, this exploration attempts to contextualise the performance genre from a different point of entry. The perception that Kōlam is a comprehensive performance system, informed by the ontological and epistemological sensibilities of the performance maker, that in turn manifest in its aesthetic and narrative expression, is the key driver behind the research. -

Andrew Huxleyt Rebecca Redwood French and Randall Peerenboom have written the two best books of the last twenty years on the legal cultures and legal history of Asia. In The Golden Yoke,' French describes the legal system of precolonial Tibet under the Dalai Lama's rule (1641-1959) with particular attention to its operation in the 1940s and 1950s. Although Tibetan law lasted longer than that of any other Buddhist state, French's book presents its first full-length examination. Law and Morality in Ancient China2 looks back two millenia to examine the debates between Confucianists, Daoists, and Legalists. The discovery of the Huang-Lao Boshu3 (silk manuscripts) in 1973 rendered the standard accounts of early Chinese legal culture out of date, and Peerenboom is the first to offer a map of the new terrain. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 a Abstract In this study an attempt is made to examine the developments in the history of Ceylon from the death of Parakramabahu I to the end of the reign of Parakramabahu II covering a period of roughly a century (c.1180 to 1270 A.D.)* The unity and general prosperity which the country enjoyed under Parakramabahu I gave way to dissension and disintegration soon after his death. The forces of disintegration moved on until about four decades after Parakramabahu1s death Dambadeniya emerged as a new centre of activity and of resistance to foreign invaders with the founda tion of a royal residence there. The difficult problems concerning the disintegration of the Poionnaruva Kingdom so soon after reaching its cul mination under Parakramabahu I, and the subsequent rise of Dambadeniya to importance under parakramabahu II form the subject of this study. -

The second chapter deals with the various titles, throne names and personal najnes used by the kings of this period, in the discussion of which we have analysed the various factors that led to their selection, particu larly the underlying religious and political signifi cance of the titles and their importance with respect to the growth of kingly power. -

The classes I remember the most are the ones where I felt so passionate about my topic, and so full of wonder at the independence of expression possible through writing. However, it wasn’t until I began research on divine possession in Sri Lanka, a topic that would go on to consume most of my thoughts for the better part of a year, that I truly began to grasp the privilege of doing research and the responsibility that comes with having access to source material from so many spheres of life crossing through time and space.
